  • Singing in her first movie musical
Plot Summary:
In her first animated musical featuring seven original songs, Barbie comes to life in this modern re-telling of a classic tale of mistaken identity and the power of friendship. Based on the story by Mark Twain, Barbie as The Princess and The Pauper features Barbie in an exciting dual role as a princess and a poor village girl - two girls who look amazingly alike. The girls' paths are fated to cross when Princess Anneliese is captured and Erika, her look-alike, must try to save her. Can Erika pretend to be the Princess and foil her captor, the evil Preminger? And what of the handsome King Dominick, who falls in love with Erika, mistaking her for Princess Anneliese? In this magical musical performance, two beautiful, adventurous girls dare to follow their dreams and discover that destiny is written in a very special place: your heart.

Another Barbie movie. And guess what? Kelly Sheridan is also in this film. Before I ever ran across the Barbie movies, I would have never heard this name, but that is the miracle for being willing to watch any movie out there.Anyway, its just a Barbie version of the "Prince and the Pauper" that has been done so many times before. Except this is a GGI Barbie version with a twist: somebody is trying to take over the 'Barbie kingdom'. Yes, very exciting.Overall, except for the two couples at the end, the story followed the traditional format. Not much to see here. "D-"

This movie was the first Barbie movie that i completely love! As they say in the commercials, this is the first movie Barbie sings and i loved all of the songs and dances. They are just so well written. Since none of my friends liked the movie and since i loved it so well, i had to kind of keep it a secret until the day that i forced all of my friends to watch it and guess what! They loved it also! They all kept singing the songs randomly everywere and they didn't care if people were stairing at them because the songs make you feel so good about yourself. I completely think everyone should watch this movie, its amazing!

For my daughter, this movie was pretty much the ultimate best thing ever for about six months (longer than both Cinderella AND Beauty and the Beast!!!!!) She gained her love of singing from this movie, and I must admit I was incredibly impressed!! I have seen this movie about three times on my own, without my girls around (one is more of a tomboy, and thinks she's "too cool" for Barbie), but after finding myself with the tune "Free" stuck in my head for days on end, I realized that in fact, I truly did enjoy the movie, for its own merit and not just because my daughter was so infatuated. I have seen Swan Lake, Rapunzel, 12 Dancing Princesses, and actually bought myself Nutcracker because the Barbie movies were so wonderful. They are my guilty pleasure and I enjoy them immensely, although not as often as my daughter did!

  • Perfect Little Girl's Movie posted on 30 Aug 2009

I've read many of the other reviews for this movie and usually I read the negative first.First of all this movie is aimed at little girls. Girls probably from 3-10 who love all the beautiful magic this film brings to life. The story is similar to the Prince and the Pauper and it isn't historically accurate. This is after all a simple movie for children and doesn't need a lot of violence, action, or too much depth. The colors are rich and the animation (all computer animated) is beautiful. The details and the softness of the characters make the movie much easier to watch than some of today's - Saturday morning cartoons.I am a sucker for all fairy -tales and like to watch them all - even as an adult so I can sit and enjoy these types of movies with my daughter. This movie defiantly isn't for everyone- but if you are into the girlie scene and love fairy tales and won't go overboard if there is changes made - then this is your ticket! And it's perfect for the little princess who would love to see her toys come to life on screen.

  • Almost Rogers and Hammerstein posted on 30 Aug 2009

Some of the sweetest words I've heard lately were, "Daddy, come watch Barbie with me." After she feel asleep in my arms, I finished the movie... re-wound it and watched some scenes again. I later rented the movie again for myself... uh, err, I mean for her of coarse... okay, I have no pride.I thought the lyrics and music were world level excellent. The delicate, innocent emotions captured by the animators were heart melting and Martin Short's voice work was hilarious.I think if this was a more innocent time, "Arnie Roth" (composer) would be listed among the greats. Hmmmm, Rogers and Hammerstein? - maybe more still to come from this great talent.A definite top 500 best movies of all time.

Hi everybody! I live in city of Novi Sad in Serbia. I purchased the DVD 6 months ago for my small doter. Just recently I started to watch it with her regularly, and I am amazed! So nice, so perfect, what a singing, Barbies together are extraordinary singers, nice melodies, and Preminger on the other side is genius character presenter himself. I read here that he was nominated, no wonder, excellent!! What to say except I will see this movie many more times. I am interested to buy a complete screenplay so that I can understand what are all the words (since English is not my native language and I am missing some words). Does anyone know where one can buy it?... All the best to you all! Again, this screenplay is something this planet needed!!! Great, simple but sublime! I salute you all, Regards, Dragan

  • A modern love story about being true to yourself and your dreams, then being loved in return. posted on 30 Aug 2009

Being sceptical of Barbie computer animation, I hesitantly agreed to watch this film with my 6 year old daughter. I was wonderfully surprised. The music, the animation, and the story were fluid, artistic, and actually captivating. I found myself WANTING to see what was going to happen next. It wasn't as predictable as I initially thought, and I found myself singing along by the end! Well done to the producers of the film along with everyone else involved. I would highly recommend this film to anyone with children (my 8 year old son even watched it without a moan) and to anyone who is just a hopeless romantic. Very enjoyable viewing. I have since seen the movie several times...sometimes with no children accompanying me.

  • Loved it! posted on 30 Aug 2009

I bought the DVD as soon as it came out. I've watched it with my grand-daughter about a dozen times. I still can't get some of the songs out of my head. I sing along. I buy all the Barbie movies and this has to be the best.I'd actually like to see a stage production of this. If it's done by young people, even better.Let's remember, the target audience is young girls.......I'd like to know of just one girl that has the movie, but didn't watch it more than once. And they know the words to all the songs. (okay, so do I). What on earth could they have done to make it better?

  • Amazing!!! posted on 30 Aug 2009

OK, OK, so it's not the most sophisticated film in the world, but it has a surprisingly good plot and great sing-along music. Good for when you're feeling low, this movie will cheer you up. Best bits are definitely the 'out-takes' in the credits. They must be seen to be believed. My one grumble however, is that the Shellys could have put in a bigger appearance; they didn't even have speaking parts - they should talk to their agents! Kelly Sheridan is fabulous as always although the best character must be the super-camp villain! His evil laugh just cracks me up. Then there is the 'doggish-cat' who always barks instead of meowing, which is a little strange, but very cute.I have seen this film far too many times and know practically all the words to the songs (sad but true!), but it never gets dull. All in all, another great movie from Barbie and a worthwhile first musical. I really need to see the other Barbie films though, they are being made too fast for me to catch up. But of the ones I've seen, this is the best. Suitable for all ages!

  • Wonderful choice for the whole family posted on 30 Aug 2009

This is a wonderful film. I bought the video tape for my 3-year-old daughter, but ended up seeing it more than her :) I wonder if someone can help me with the lyrics of all the songs, specially the one that says: and you're always free to begin again, and the one that says: I love you for you, when you love me for me. They are very motivating, and I'd love to learn them and then teach them to my children. My email address is h.fayed@MT.com.kw. What I also like about it is that it is computer animated cartoon, not like the regular cartoons we usually see. The music is of an excellent standard. Involving both human characters and animals truly enriches our children imagination. my kids loved the characters and the two cats, and of course... the horse. I'd like to add that the scenes looked as if a professional camera-man took all the shoots. the 'camera' was moving from all the corners. The movie is wonderfully great.

  • it was way better than the other Barbie princess movies posted on 30 Aug 2009

As a collector of Barbie Dolls (the vintage ones from the 60's) I'm also always interested in the contemporary market of dolls. I saw the Erika doll at a toys-R-us back in 2002. I didn't realize that it was from a movie in 2004, because it would have been worth a fortune. I still don't know how it got there. This movie is the best of the Barbie movies. The villain isn't some superhuman magical warlock or witch that has lazer beams shooting out of their hands like in some of the early Barbie movies. Preminger, the Queen's adviser is an incompetent villain that can't do anything right so he has two roadies who do his every command and at the same time are the film's comic relive. Our two heroines are not just two blonds that can't do anything right and whined up getting in trouble and their handsome prince has to save them and then they get married for no possible reason. The princess in this movie has more sense than that and is interested in science (FINALLY, A SMART BARBIE PRINCESS! THERE IS A GOD!!!) Erika, the pauper is something of a dreamer and wants to be famous and sing in front of Lords and Ladies and tour the world. The plot is simple enough for little girls to like, and for parents to live through. The story is that Princess Annaliese is engaged to King Domonick, a foreign king who is loaded with cash apparently because the only reason Annaliese is marrying him is because her mother is broke. All of the gold from their royal mine had disappeared and so has Preminger. What a coincidence (wink wink.) Annaliese secretly loves Julian her tutor who I must admit is pretty hot, with is long blond hair that flows in the wind. Meanwhile, pauper Erika is living with Madame Carp as a seamstress because before Erika was old enough to remember, her parents borrowed money from Carp and they died before they could pay her back, so now Erika is stuck working for Carp until the debt is paid off, which conveniently will be paid off at the stroke of never because Madame Carp is an evil scheming villain that intends to keep her working with her for "37 years." So one day while the girls are out in town for their own reasons, they meet each other and break into song (hey this is a musical, remember.) The night after they meet, Annaliese is kidnapped, but no one know who kidnapped her (except for the viewers because you can plainly see that Preminger's flunkies are behind it.) So now, Erika must take Annaliese's place until Julian can find out what really happened to her. I loved this movie and I have seen it about 7 times, and the irony of the matter is that I don't have any kids, but I do sometimes recommend movies to my 5 year old niece who also loves the movie. The music can be corny, silly, and fun. But then again it can also be beautiful (I'm just crazy about that song "Free.") There is no violence, no cursing, nothing bad or scary. This is just the cutest film ever, and it even made me laugh! The only problem is that it isn't long enough. 75 minutes isn't enough for this gem.

  • praises for writers not Mattel posted on 30 Aug 2009

However being a bit of a Barbie cynic where companies will pretty much do any promotions to get their dolls sold, even to make a film about it, i must say rite now i found this film was pretty good quality for straight release DVD and intended for a younger female audience. I'm singing praises for the writers and songwriters and voice talents, both singing and speaking as i found this depiction of this story of 'the prince and the pauper' used many times over the years quite an original perspective piece of work and so amusing as well. This was very well done and has seemed to have amused where Disney has failed in recent years. The main characters, princess Anneliese and Erika were well thought out i think and seem to have science interested princess and more adventurous pauper than maybe more humble one. When Erika collapsed i thot shes having a Bridget Jones moment. Predicitable they were going to marry in the end but what wasn't predictable was sum of the twists in this film. my opinion anyway. and the villain and the two Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dummer sidekicks - funny to watch.the songs were well done and sung beautifully , cud easily think maybe its a catchy Disney song.although this film is intended for little girls - and i think this one well worth having a look at - though i wouldn't really brag bout it to ma friends, might one day :P still think is an okay flick, shame that ppl who sell the toys get the credit not ones behind the flick then again without the toy there would be no flick. ah well

  • I'm not exactly in the Barbie demographic...but posted on 30 Aug 2009

this is an EXCELLENT product. It certainly is good enough to have been a theatrical release. It's one of the best soundtracks I've heard on the kids' products - on par with Disney. The animation is great, the voice talent is terrific. My only disappointment was when I looked up some of the talent and couldn't find them on another Barbie video (well, as main characters at least). Terrific adaption of the story. I actually enjoy listening to the CD in the car with my daughter! I didn't realize that Martin Short was on the video until after I went to IMDb. The singing voices are great as well. After a string of disappointing "part 2s" from Disney, it's nice to find that another big name is stepping up with direct-to-video quality that can entertain over and over.

  • Nice movie, but definitely not a classic posted on 30 Aug 2009

I know that, when people make a Barbie movie, they are probably thinking "This movie is going to be a classic" or "They will probably like it so much, it will become as famous as Annie". But when I saw this movie, I was sort of disappointed. I thought it actually would be a classic, but it didn't have enough songs to become a classic, and there needed to be more emotion in the story line. Still, the movie itself was nice. The only problem with it was that it didn't have the potential to be better than those smash hit Broadway movies. Broadway type movies are usually emotional and have a very very very good cast. This movie had a cast that I would give five out of ten stars, and there were only like nine songs. I hope that the next Barbie movie actually does "make it to the top".

  • A delightful surprise posted on 30 Aug 2009

(Well, I gave this a 10 only because that's what my 5 year old daughter would give it.) My daughter and I were at the video department and I asked her to pick out a video and I'd buy it for her. To my horror, she picked Barbie. I was dreading this because she's the type of person that can watch a movie over, and over and over again; and I sit with her and watch it again, and again (and I pretend to enjoy it). :o) Well, to my surprise, it wasn't that bad at all. I actually enjoyed it.Spoiler======================================================== The princess is intelligent and strong; she doesn't wait for the prince to rescue her. The pauper is not so easily swept away by the prince. She follows her dream to be a singer and then she decides when she wants to marry. ================================================================ Over all, I was very pleasantly surprised. The music was very entertaining as well.

  • 40-year-old heterosexual male finds surprisingly good music. posted on 30 Aug 2009

How's this for a commentary on the music in this movie: I sometimes specifically ask my wife if she has it in the car to listen to, pushing out Duran Duran or other music from the golden age of the early 80's. I am skeptical of musicals by nature, so when I heard that the Barbie people had produced a musical, I could only imagine how shallow the music was going to be, seeing that it would be directed towards our 7-year-old daughter's age group. I of course had no choice but to hear it several times after we bought the movie and our daughter and 3-year-old son wanted to listen to the CD in the car. I was surprised beyond anything I could imagine to find that there is some serious quality among the songs that are done here. As for the movie's animation, it may be my imagination that the production skimped a bit in that area to pay for the songwriting. And of course the Barbie series' animation was already nothing to get excited about in this day of Pixar, Dreamworks, and Blue Sky producing top-notch computer-generated material. But the music itself is really a find, and I would recommend it to anyone.

  • The wee tykes will love this movie, and you won't mind it either posted on 30 Aug 2009

Five years ago if you told me I'd be watching a Barbie princess movie I would have slapped you. Today my daughter is going through her Princess stage and I was getting tired of the (well crafted) Disney stories (Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty etc) so I picked up this movie.Kai was humming along to the songs within moments of the start, the tunes are (like beauty and the beast) mindlessly catchy. The story, for what it is, is not too bad. The animation is standard CGI, not Pixar level, but not too bad.If you're looking for high brow opera this is not a movie for you, however if you actually want your daughter to have an enjoyable 70 minutes then I recommend this movie.rob

  • Pretty good for a Barbie movie! posted on 30 Aug 2009

Okay, if your looking for Dickens here you won't get it... but if your open-minded and come out it from the right point of view you will at least be amused, if you don't like it.The movie is obviously made for children. The characters Analiese and Erika and their respective love matches don't even share a kiss on screen. I found it obvious who they were going to end up with at the end of the movie... perhaps they hadn't meant it to be ambiguous, but maybe a bit more subtlety? The animation is very good! Sure, you won't mistake it for reality, but it is very surprising for a Barbie movie. Over all, I'd definitely recommend this- not to my friends, who are too old for this movie- but for the girl I babysit for.

  • Guilty pleasure posted on 30 Aug 2009

OK...as the mother of a young girl, I was mortified when her aunt bought a BARIBE video. I reluctantly watched it with her, ready to strike down stereotypes and support weak female characters. I couldn't have been more pleasantly surprised. I find myself enjoying the film and even singing along with the songs (...we have the CD in my car CD player and we sing together in the car!). Despite having seen it too many times to count, I still don't mind watching it with my daughter and I'm pleased with the depth of the major characters. I'd recommend this for young children because it is easy to follow, pleasant to look at, and enjoyable to sing along with. My 5 year old especially likes to quote some of the cute lines from the animals and learned a lot about liking people (or dog-ish cats!) for who they are not what they look like.

  • interesting movie posted on 30 Aug 2009

"Barbie as the Princess and the Pauper" is a good movie, and it's also rather interesting. It has talking animals, including a cat who acts like a dog. Before I saw this movie, I never once pictured Martin Short as an evil mastermind. But if it's a funny villain, which Preminger is, I guess it's okay. It's interesting how some animated characters resemble their voice actors. For example, Preminger has not only Martin Short's voice, but also his face.Since I'm a total Martin Short freak, I chose Preminger as my favorite character from this movie. Like I said, he's funny. I especially like the part where he's sliding across the table and runs into the cake, and it lands on his head.
