  • They Don't Play by the Rules.
  • You're either on their side...or in their way.
  • America's top counter-terrorist usually works alone...this time he's got company.
Plot Summary:
Having retiring from the CIA, where he was an anti-terrorist operative, Jack Paul Quinn spends his days poolside at his house in Nice, France with his pregnant wife Katherine Rose Quinn. But international terrorist Stavros, an old enemy of Quinn's, has resurfaced, and the CIA wants Quinn to come out of retirement, and go after Stavros. Quinn reluctantly accepts the assignment. Quinn goes to Antwerp, Belgium and hooks up with flamboyant arms dealer Yaz, who has the newest fully-automatic weapons. With Quinn's assembled delta-force, an ambush is set for Stavros at a local amusement park. Stavros arrives, and greets his girlfriend...and his son. Quinn finds himself unable to shoot Stavros with his son. This moment of hesitation is costly, and Quinn's entire team is killed off in a shoot-out with Stavros' men -- a shoot-out in which Stavros's son and girlfriend are both killed. Quinn chases Stavros into a nearby hospital, and they battle it out in a nursery full of newborn babies. Quinn is knocked out cold, and Stavros escapes, vowing revenge on Quinn for the deaths of his son and girlfriend, not knowing that Quinn was not the agent who killed them. When Quinn comes to, he finds himself in "The Colony," a place where "those who are too valuable to kill and too dangerous to set free" use their special skills around the world as "the last line of defense against global terrorism." Using virtual reality and mouseless-graphical-user-interfaces, they solve all the world's bombings, hijackings, and terrorist attacks. The only problem is that no one can ever leave The Colony. That's why Quinn's superiors tell Katherine that Quinn is dead. Not long after his arrival, Quinn finds evidence that Katherine is being targeted by Stavros, and so Quinn hatches an elaborate plan to escape from the Colony so he can protect Katherine. Once out of The Colony, Quinn hooks up with Yaz, and they learn that Stavros has kidnapped Katherine and taken her to Rome, planning to get revenge on Quinn through the baby, which Katherine has given birth to. Quinn and Yaz set out for Rome to rescue Katherine. It all comes to a head in a Roman coliseum in a showdown featuring a tiger, land mines...and the baby.

  • All Time Great Moments in Film posted on 10 Jun 2009

I actually only caught about the last 1/3 of this movie on cable and I still feel it warranted such a rating. I think the part when the building where the ending is taking place, the building blows up and Rodman pulls a Coke Machine out to block him and Van Damm from the the explosion. I could not believe this, why was there a coke machine there? Were there spectators for the other tiger battles and Coke must have been in high demand, thus the machine? Ridiculous. Also, the dialog was terrible. When Van Damm is running around at the end looking for his son, repeating "Where is my son" and Rodman is says "I'm Looking!!, and the guy with his son just randomly happens to be standing right around the corner. Horribly acted, written, conceived, just overall a waste of time. Please post some other classic moments I missed.

  • alright movie posted on 21 May 2009

the only good part of this movie is mickey rourke he is great in it.

  • Silly and Predictable posted on 04 Mar 2009

For those who can't get enough of superstar basketball player Dennis Rodman, he stars in this vechicle as a weapons guru who teams up with Van-Damme to fight bad guy Rourke, which leads to all the obvious twists and turns. Aimed primarily at the legion of Rodman fans, who presumably don't care how predictable the whole thing is.

  • Good for what it is posted on 02 Jan 2009

A lot of people seem to forget that Van Damme isn't trying to make a really great movie. He doesn't usually care about the plot or the acting. He wants to make an action movie. That is the only reason I ever watch his movies and he never fails to deliver, including in this movie. Sure you cringe at the corny acting and dialogue when it happens, but the action sequences totally make up for it. I also enjoy when a movie doesn't take place in the US or Canada. I'm just bored with that. In this movie they go to Antwerp and Rome. Very cool settings for the movie. Over all I was quite pleased. The director, Tsui Hark (I have NO idea how you pronounce that), is always quite reliable in making a good action movie. It was just a good action movie, people. Don't look at it for more than what it was.

  • Van Damme the ULTIMATE 80's / B-movie actor posted on 25 Oct 2008

Now we're talking! What potion are we concocting? A dab of violence, explosions, secret island societies, true celebs (Rodman), romance, and did i mention cross dressing Dennis Rodman! All that thrown in the cauldron with a swift roundhouse. Really, one of his formative latter films, where he seems to be moving away from his winning Bloodsport formula (only god knows why, yet this seems to work). There are enough roundhouses, flying roundhouses, and more roundhouses to please the avid JCVD supporter. Also stars a great role by Mickey Rourke. What a cast!! I highly recommend watching this as Rodmans non-acting ability lets Van Damme shine, only to be balanced by Rourkes suave demeanor.

  • great camerawork posted on 07 Sep 2008

I'm not very fond of violence, and also not of television movies. But, though the closeups in this 'action' movie are typical for a film made for TV, the camerawork is great. Much effort seems to have been put into positioning and moving the camera, using filters and carefull framing. Reminded me of "Crouching tiger...". Couldn't see all because Star Wars IV was on another net.

  • A Dennis Rodman film with oblique basketball references!? posted on 05 Aug 2008

Watching this film was similar to having toothpicks shoved under my fingernails. While i am a fan of the BIG, DUMB action film this fell far short of providing the requisite entertainment value. When i saw this badboy staring back at me with the "let's get busy" eyes of Rodman and Van Damme I thought i had found a winner for a boring Saturday night. As it turns out i was more entertained by the low-budget Hasselhoff flick i rented as well. This movie had all the elements i look for in a BIG, DUMB action film (i.e government agents who play by there own rules, sociopathic madmen, sports figures masquerading as actors) but i was completely let down. A boring plot combined with mush-mouthed dialogue is all i got for my rental fee. The best parts of the film are Rodman's pointless references to basketball even though it is never actually pointed out that he has anything to do with basketball. As far as we know he is simply a renegade gun runner with a soft spot for down on their luck agents.Even though i am not giving a favorable review of this film i do recommend it to anyone who likes good fights. There are many and they appear to be well directed. Also especially good is Mickey Rourke as he hams it up as the killer out to get revenge on Van Damme character. This is what we have come to expect from Van Damme so i shouldn't complain. I'm just glad he isn't trying comedy yet.

  • Okay action, but huge logical gaps. posted on 12 Jul 2008

Double Team is the third movie that Van Damme has done for a former HONG-KONG action-movie director. He has done "Hard Target" for John Woo and "Maximum Risk" for Ringo Lam. Double Team is directed by Tsui Hark. Hark is excellent at directing action-scenes and Double Team is a good way for him to start in Hollywood. Van Damme plays agent Jack Quinn, and is sent out to kill super-terrorist Stavros, who is played by Mickey Rourke. Quinn fails and is therefore sent sent to a place called "The Colony". "The Colony" is a place where the world's most dangerous terrorists/agents are sent. These agents/terrorists are too dangerous to go free on the street and too valuable to kill. Quinn escapes from the colony and goes after Stavroes for revenge. Quinn is helped by Yaz, who is played by the basket-star Dennis Rodmann. Double Team is full of well made action and martial-art scenes. However, it`s far from perfect. The whole plot is very silly, there are huge logical gaps and holes in the story and Mickey Rourke is far from convincing as a villain. Double Team isn`t a film for everybody. Van Damme seems like he is out of shape. But it`s definetly worth to rent it for an action-fan. But I must say that "Knock Off" is better. I give this movie 7 out of 10.

  • Van Damme cool posted on 01 Jul 2008

Jean-claude Van Damme is at it again, this time with Dennis Rodman on his team. Van Damme is Quinn, anti-terrorist extraordinairre, who inadvertendly kills the son of terrosist, who wants revenge. cool

  • Van Damme good,Rodman stop the torture... posted on 22 Jun 2008

In 1997 Columbia Tristar released this highly anticipated action adventure thriller, starring action superstar Jean Claude Van Damme and his sidekick Dennis Rodman?Thats right Rodman was cast to support Van Damme.Excuse me did Rodman have any acting exposure before this tragedy, tragedy not on Van Dammes part but on Rodmans horrible acting skills.I actually enjoyed the action sequences that were in the film because they went on non stop and at full speed.Van Damme had showed better acting in some of his other films but this one wasn't horrible,it was good enough.
The supporting cast needed some help and I believe thats what made the film fail. The box-office hype eventually left theaters a little earlier than expected, but still the film was pretty good.

  • does your hair change colour when you sweat?? posted on 02 Mar 2008

before xxx there was this, the campiest movie this side of rocky horror.where do you start to comment on a movie like this? the premise is fantastic, van damme is supposedly left for dead and arrives at the colony, a place where other agents from the world bask together in the sun before helping the earth overcome another villain. bond anyone? van damme is having none of this when he knows his beloved wife is in danger from Stavros (mickey Rourke, not a Spanish waiter), so he sees how long he can hold his breath for while he burns a cigarette.making a daredevil escape, he gains help from dennis rodman who is like bonds 'q' (the q should stand for queer in this movie as rodman is odd) assisting him with gadgets and one liners about basketball.another twist to the film is that belloq from raiders of the lost ark is tracking van damme to dispose of him.seriously though this is stupendous fun and van damme knows this is a self deprecating role, and is clearly loving every minute of it. rodman is woefully miscast and should have never been allowed near the script and Rourke looks just old but he wear nice sneakers.it is quite serious in places and that gravitas to the action, which is some of the best van damme has ever done. some of the special effects are dodgy, but i believe this is intentional.this is the movie equivalent of sunny d, good but very colourful and bad for you if you have too much.splendid

  • Double Team is a diamond in the rough! posted on 19 Feb 2008

Double Team is like the greatest pleasure in the whole world times 100. Van Damme has an excellent roll as Jack Quinn, a hard core counter terrorist who is out to get terrorist stavros, mickey rourke. Also teaming up with VanDamme is weapons dueler yaz, dennis rodman. Some of the fights scenes will blow you away well other things will make you laugh until you cry. Also if you are wanting one of the best final showdowns between good and evil then the ending of double team will blow you away.In conclusion, Double Team is a excellent movie for all you action fans out there with a love for van damme flicks.

  • Double Team is Excellent posted on 20 Jan 2008

Hong Kong action director Hark Tsui brings many explosive, fast-paced action scenes in this Jean-Claude Van Damme movie. Many thrilling, breathtaking stunts and action, is well captured in a very good level. Rodman has plenty of time on screen and performs very well as his weird character ( Yaz ). He plays an arms dealer, helping Van Damme into tracking down his family who was captured by the evil and sadistically character played by a well muscled Mickey Rourke who blames Jack Quinn ( Jean Claude Van Damme ) for the death of his son. Jean Claude Van Damme once again proves he is great in action sequences and shows how fast he can be, in his first fast paced-action movie. The plot is unique and different, Jack Quinn ( Jean Claude Van Damme ) plays the nations top anti-terrorist agent who fails to capture terrorist Stavros ( Mickey Rourke ) and Stavros family is killed in the process. Jack Quinn is taken to the colony for being uncovered and failing his mission. After getting a message from Stavros that he as, Quinn's wife and soon to be born son, he escapes the colony and asks ( Yaz ) Rodman for help. Both travel to Italy, while a vengeful Stavros waits for a final showdown at the Roman Colosseum.I highly recommend this movie, it is a must see for everyone.

  • Van-Damme at his techno-MacGyver best with kicks attached! posted on 14 Jan 2008

Spoilers attached maybe: Van damme and Dennis Rodman team up to be directed by one of asian action cinema's best action directors Tsui Hark. Also known to some as the Colony, this van damme movie is damme good. From the market shootout/fight to what has to be one of Van dammes best fights, set in the Rome coloseumm Van Damme kicks it out with awesome style and Hark's electric camera shots and editing make this one of his best fights. Rodman kicks ass too but mainly his role is one-liners but still this is a Van Damme movie and one of his best behind TimeCop and Hard Target.

  • Newer action stars take note. posted on 15 Dec 2007

Double Team is a Terrorist/Spy thriller that echos the Prisoner.DT stars the very-odd trio of Van Damme,Dennis Rodman, and Mickey Rourke. To the average filmgoer this could mean chessfest, but the casting works very well.Tsui Hark shows Hollywood once again that he can stage action like the big boys. The plot is jumbled, logic be (Van)dammed, but it delivers the goods:Action.JC kicks alot of ass.Rodman is himself, and Mickey Rourke makes a very good villian. This is what Cradle to the Grave and XXX wanted to be and failed.8/10

  • No brains, just muscles posted on 26 Sep 2007

Terrorist Rourke's family is killed in an attempt to "get" him; I still can't figure out if they were trying to arrest him or to kill him. The anti-terrorist team is led by Van Damme's character who's badly wounded in the operation. He's taken to a secret island-prison, called the Colony, for secret agents who've failed their mission. From there these double-O somethings can give the world their advice on terrorist attacks etc., but they cannot leave the island and everybody thinks they're dead. So everybody, even his wife, thinks Van Damme is dead - except Rourke (who seems to have got this top secret information from nowhere) who continues his personal vendetta against Van Damme by kidnapping his soon-to-give-birth wife. So, Van Damme escapes in one of the movie's best scenes and gets gunrunner Rodman to help him rescue his wife and baby.

After the escape from the Colony, the movie becomes far-fetched to the extreme. Van Damme can play this kind of role in his sleep by now - this doesn't mean he plays it well, but you weren't expecting any Gielgud style acting from him were you? Rodman's hair changes colour and design in every act; his acting capabilities are on par with Van Damme's. On the other hand, the scenery chewing Rourke (who seems to have been pumping iron for quite some time now) pulls quite a good job out of the material he has to work with. Tsui Hark, director of A Better Tomorrow 3 and the Once Upon a Time in China series, directs energetically enough but nothing can rescue this mess. Solar systems could pass through the holes in this script.

  • Explosive!Exhilarating thrill ride! posted on 16 Sep 2007

Forget the critics and the appalling Maximum Risk and Nowhere To Run,Double Team ranks alongside Street Fighter and Blood Sport as one of Van Damme's most enjoyable movies.Mickey Rourke is a tasty villain and ,as long as you're not expecting the next Robert Duvall, basketball pro Dennis Rodman tags along for the duration. One of the better, most unnoticed films of '98.

  • HORRID MOVIE posted on 08 Sep 2007

Van Damme has been in some bad flicks, but this takes the cake. With uninspired acting and blatenly fake action scenes (including running through explosions, and hiding behind SODA MACHINES to avoid others) it was filled with plot holes, and was boring even for an action movie AVOID AT ALL COSTS

  • Such Wit! posted on 10 Jul 2007

This is a witty team that should go in the record books: Van Damme (deity) and Dennis Rodman (no ability). You might think this movie is awful and hideous, but it's truly a comical look about an action star kicking major stern as usual and a basketball player trying to be an action star. No, basketball players should stick to playing basketball or in this case, cross-dressing. Van Damme carries the ball 'n chain in this movie and makes it work, as expected. He fought a buffed out Mickey Rourke, a man with a knife in his toes and a tiger! Heroism! He was an agent who started fresh with a new agency and had to look for Stavros (Rourke). Rodman got in the way too much and actually made an airball. Terrible. Van Damme made fun of him and his hair, 'who does it? Siegfried or Roy?' Pure hilarity. Go Van Damme, don't take any garbage from that creature. Yes! A rare comedic performance from a deity.
