  • It all started with one wrong move
Plot Summary:
Alex Rose (Stiller) and Nancy Kendricks (Barrymore) are a young, professional, New York couple in search of their dream home. When they finally find the perfect Brooklyn brownstone they are giddy with anticipation. The duplex is a dream come true, complete with multiple fireplaces, except for one thing: Mrs. Connelly (Eileen Essel), the cranky old lady who lives on the rent-controlled top floor. Assuming she is elderly and ill, they take the apartment but their hopes are quickly dashed when they realize that Mrs. Connelly is an energetic senior who enjoys watching her television at top volume day in and day out and rehearsing in a brass band. A writer, Alex is attempting to finish his novel against a looming deadline. However, each day as he begins to write, he is interrupted by Mrs. Connelly's numerous demands and requests and what begins as a nuisance quickly escalates into an all-out war. When Nancy loses her job and the pair are trapped at home together with Mrs. Connelly, their rage turns to homicidal fantasy as they plot ways to get rid of their no-good neighbour...

  • This is a disappointing comedy that is not funny at all posted on 12 Aug 2009

Danny De Vito shouldn't quit his day job. He should stick to acting and leave directing to the real pros. Duplex is at the top of my list of so-called comedy movies that not only failed to make me laugh, but also left me disappointed and, to excuse the pun, literally p*ssed off.For one thing, it's not realistic, assuming that it's intent is to be a "realistic comedy". So the setting is in New York, where I expect Ben and Drew to behave like true-blooded New Yorkers -- serious and uncompromising and circumspect in every aspect of their day-to-day living -- instead, Director Danny makes them look like a couple of pushovers to a clearly criminally obvious bunch of scam artists who take them for a ride to the very end of the movie. Remember, a good movie is also judged by its good ending -- in the case of Duplex, it was very, very bad ending -- because it ends up with Ben and Drew both losing their jobs, their hard-earned money, their house, and their self-esteem. WHAT IS FUNNY ABOUT THIS??!! This movie is not only un-New Yorker, its even un-American -- and to think I'm not even an American to notice this. From 1 to 10, I give this poor excuse of a comedy movie, a 2 (I'm being merciful here), for its vain attempt at dark but stupid humor.

  • Hysterical! posted on 07 Aug 2009

This movie is so funny! We rented it, loved it, and then purchased it and have watched it several times now. Ben Stiller always cracks me up! Drew Barrymore is funny in this movie, too, and you'll fall in love with the "nice", elderly neighbor lady. (umm....maybe) I highly recommend this movie for lighthearted fun. You won't be disappointed.

  • stiller, you love him or you hate him. posted on 25 Jul 2009

this ben stiller movie, is a very funny movie if you are a fan of ben stiller, if not, why did you even read this far into the review. anyway im a big ben stiller fan, and i loved it, it did what it was supposed to do, make me laugh while providing me with some eye candy in the form of drew barrymore looking sexy as ever. anyway the story sees stiller and barrymore move into a new duplex apartment, only problem is the very old lady living upstairs, who causes nothting but grief for the couple until they are drove to the point of murder, don't worry though cus the movie never gets as dark as you'd expect, and stays on feel good form for most of it. there are some great gags and laugh out loud moments. all in all if you like ben stiller movies pick this up

  • Not That Bad posted on 21 Jul 2009

Duplex (2003, Dir. Danny DeVito) Alex Rose and Nancy Kendricks are a young couple who believe they have found their perfect home to start a family in. There is just one problem. An elderly tenant is staying upstairs and won't move out. Alex and Nancy desperately try everything to convince her to leave, but she refuses to move. Soon, their dream home becomes their home of nightmares.'Duplex' (or 'Our House' in the UK) is one of Ben Stiller's lesser known films. The story is pretty straight forward. A couple tries everything to get an old woman out of her home. The couple aren't exactly the greatest thing in the film. Ben Stiller gives a good performance but is not memorable in any way. Drew Barrymore is the same and portrays a character who comes off slightly annoying. It is Eileen Essell who lightens the film up with her hilarious actions and comments. I would give this a try as it does offer a few good laughs."How is Mr. Peabody doing?" - Herman (Wallace Shawn)

  • truly abysmal posted on 24 Jun 2009

My wife gave up on it after a half hour. I wanted to like it (hey, I paid $4.00 to rent it) so I made it another half hour before turning it off. The script is awful and the film is an embarrasing mess.

Actually, when I was 12 I might have found the vomiting gags amusing. It's hard to imagine why Ben Stiller and Drew Barriemore were willing to stoop to these kinds of antics. I lost an hour I can never get back.

  • Annoying movie plot, DO NOT watch it posted on 22 Jun 2009

This movie is an exact copy of Tom and Jerry. Jerry always won and Tom is actually the victim. Seriously, this kind of plot is dumb and lame, if I want to make someone misery I can do it in a blink of eye, not to mention the opponent is an ancient ugly woman. I knew something is going on with the agent, cop and the ugly old one, it was too obvious.

But this movie does give us one helpful advise, DO NOT trust any old ancient human, they are not what they seem, DO NOT give them respect unless you really know who they really are. Appearance can be deceiving.

I'm a big Ben Stiller fan and had to see his new movie on opening day. Apparently everyone else must have gotten an advance warning since I was the only one in the theater. After about the third outrageously insipid scene I thought about leaving but decided to stick it out. I left the theater disappointed and angry.

  • Surprisingly good! posted on 06 Jun 2009

This film received none of the usual hype---and unsurprisingly is better than most of the films that get the talk-show "treatment". It is actually a good, enjoyable, well-made film, with good acting and an economical, amusing, script. Compared to Along Came Polly it is a masterpiece.

What is wrong with Hollywood, when they promote the proverbial out of rubbish, and send good films like this to DVD release. It is almost a rule now: if a film is heavily promoted you know it is worthless.

  • A pleasant surprise posted on 20 May 2009

Put this on last night not know anything about it and was pleasantly surprised. The plot was interesting and finished with a nice twist. Stiller and Barrymore worked well together and had a good chemistry, and it was a nice surprise to watch a comedy without too many attempts at silly slapstick. There are very few laugh out loud moments, but I was smiling on a number of occasions. Definitely reminds me of War of the Roses, which is no bad thing, and the leads play it very well.I liked the ending too, although I would have gone absolutely mental if I was them. Not what I was expecting at all. Anyone expecting the regular Ben Stiller comedy like Dodgeball will be disappointed but if you approach this with an open mind, you should be OK.Overall, quite good and a well earned 7 out of ten from me.

  • mm, good for laughs but no one said it was a masterpiece posted on 18 Apr 2009

Not every comedy is going to be a laugh a minute spectacular. As a film student and lifetime lover of film, i know as well as the next you can't view every movie with the expectation it will do something new or out of the ordinary. Sometimes, you just have to take it as it comes. Watching Duplex for the first time, i did just that. I didn't expect much and got more. There are definitely some quality laughs in this piece... more than the war of the roses as referenced above. And as far as Danny Devito's directing... it's not like the guy is looking for an academy award he chooses moves he feels he can pull of and make his own. in addition, to even be a bit cliché, if it's not broke don't fix it. final verdict: good movie for good laughs, lighthearted and zany at moments... they all can't be masterpieces.

  • A good story with a typical danny devito style. posted on 12 Apr 2009

to come to a basic opinion. The story is good, though the movie is like "throw momma from the train" (with danny devito as an actor), but then in the present instead of 1987. In short... it sucks.Take a pension Danny (atleast as a producer).

  • Funny but not Flawless posted on 12 Apr 2009

This was a genuinely funny film. Ben Stiller was great and Barrymore was just as good as usual. I think a lot of the film was unbelievable. Why would they put up with this old woman? She would not have gotten away with these things with me.I do believe the twist at the end was great. The older woman was good at her part. I would watch this film again and may own it if it ends up on sale.

  • Good For Laughs posted on 11 Apr 2009

This movie is about a couple who moves into this duplex where an old lady lives in the upper apartment she is renting. Ben stiller and Drew Barrymore were told that the old lady upstairs is a sweet lady. She turns out to be their worst nightmare. They can't sleep at night, they can't have their privacy, she asks them to run errands for her all the time and gives them accusations that are not true, but then turn to be true because they had enough of it with her she was a pain in the neck, they really tried later to kill in any way they could think of but backfired, they even called for an assassin to murder her for them for 25 grand. They didn't have that kind of money so they sold everything they had in their apartment. And guess what, the assassin couldn't get her killed either. She is one tough Lady!!
In the end they sell their duplex to another couple, go upstairs to say good bye to her, and what do they find right after they sold their duplex, the old lady past away with natural causes. They sold the place and she dies. What a waste. But the fact is.. it turned out she was faking it, holding her breath. How did she get away with it. the man who sold them the house turned out to be the old ladies son. They have been playing on couples for a long time just to get their money.

This Movie is a little like "throw momma off the train" which is about an author writing a book trying to kill an old lady too but for someone .and the author ends up writing about the whole thing. This happens too in the duplex..Ben stiller in the role of the author ends up writing a book called "Duplex" and makes lots of money.

I will give all the stars for Ben Stiller's performance....I mean he is great playing this kind of characters, I think this kind of papers it is what is was made for. He is the one that actually me you laugh with his response to these silly situations you get in this kind of movies. As the movie itself, its based on the kind of dumb jokes enough to get you through a leisure moment. as I said it is OKRegarding Danny's direction, don't know if this is the only movie he has directed, though it is the only one i have seen, that i'm not aware of. If this was he's first direction I think it is OK as a first experience

  • Watch out posted on 28 Mar 2009

This movie is cute and lovable! Drew Barrymore is perfect and Ben Stiler stunk in this movie. I bought it and watch every few weeks. No hate!

  • Not Funny posted on 27 Mar 2009

Save your money. The movie is not funny. ***spoilers*** The concept is not funny. Plotting to kill a sweet old lady simply because she is lonely and mildly annoying? I don't see the humor. The ending is pointless as well. It adds nothing to the movie. They should have just ended with her really being dead. If you really want to see it, wait for the video.

  • Maybe yes, maybe no. posted on 19 Mar 2009

This movie was so almost good. I had never seen the previews for this movie but rented it because I could not find anything else. It was actually pretty good. I didn't really know anything about the movie but I'm guessing it didn't really get good reviews since I'd never really heard anything about it and there was only one to rent in our video store. But I was actually quite pleased with the movie. I say good job Danny. It was funny and cute, and Barrymoore and Stiller were good together. not great but good enough to watch once at least. The movie deserves some credit for good acting and good directing. You gotta love Danny DeVito.

  • A nice diversion with Slapstick Humor posted on 19 Feb 2009

I know many people put this movie down as being "cheap" or "lame" or "stupid,"but I could not disagree more. The moment I saw this movie in the theater previews I knew it would be something I would enjoy. People put too much emphasis on "substance" in movies today, and when you get a movie that seems to lack this kind of substance, it is easy to put it down.Duplex is different. It takes slapstick comedy, and silly situations to a new level. For me personally, every scene was hilarious, and the premise was a silly one, but is one that really drew me into the movie. Movies like this are not meant to be taken seriously, they are meant to be laughed at and enjoyed. I think that this is where the hard core critics of this movie make a mistake. They do not see it for what it really is. It is an excellent way to pass an afternoon, and is just plain funny.I would recommend this movie to anyone, because I believe it was one of the best movies I have seen in a movie theater, and is hands down worth the price of the movie ticket. Sometimes all you need is something to take your mind off your troubles, and this movie is that something.
