  • Merry Christmas Ya Filthy Animal! posted on 30 August 2009

In the Eighties, John Hughes churned out a handful of movies and scored many, many hits. Quite rightly, as most of them were seriously funny - I'm DEFINITELY not referring to Curly Sue, so relax! In one particular scene from Uncle Buck, Macaulay Culkin interrogates a babysitter through the letterbox to make sure she's not a baddie. This inspired Hughes to write a whole new movie. Who would have known that this and its sequel would go on to become two of the biggest hits of all time? Both Hughes and Chris Columbus seem to prefer setting their movies during the holiday season (Gremlins, Planes, Trains & Automobiles, Christmas Vacation) and manage to pull them off without too much sentiment, or sickening amounts of gooey love. There are two reasons why Home Alone was such a big success. The first is that it's about a kid who outsmarts grown-ups, something that happens every day, only there's a worldwide conspiracy of silence. This movie yells it out loud and clear. The second is John Williams's magical score, which elevates the movie way above slapstick family fare to something more serious and regarded. It was nominated for an Academy Award, along with the Christmas carol Somewhere In My Memory, but lost to John Barry's Dances with Wolves. Damn! In a mad rush to the airport one morning, the MacCallister family forget one little thing...Kevin (Culkin). He is an eight-year-old kid who wants nothing better than a peaceful Christmas and some time to himself. It's hard for him to get this when living in a house with seven other people(the exact same house from Planes, Trains And Automobiles, don't you know0. With the rest of the MacCallisters in Paris, Kevin runs wild doing whatever he wants, eating whatever he wants and watching whatever TV show he wants. But there's one major problem. The Wet Bandits, Harry (Joe Pesci) and Marv (Daniel Stern), are on the prowl and have knocked off every other house in Kevin's street. His is next. And seeing that he's man-of-the-house now, he HAS to defend it.Using whatever tools are at his disposal (rusty nails, blow torches, Micro Machines) he sets up a labyrinth of booby traps, so that the Wets can't break in. Their idiot-proof determination proves to be their downfall, as they are tortured and torn-up upon entering Kevin's domain.Although this is not the only point of the film, there is an important message that family is what really matters to a child, or to anyone, and having them home for the holidays is better than wandering a huge house all by yourself. There are some movies that work best at Christmas and this is one of them. I'm not saying that in a couple of decades it will be the new It's A Wonderful Life, but it will be remembered fondly at the very least.Don't be a Scrooge. It's Christmastime. Go rush to check out Home Alone.

  • EVERYBODY'S CHIDHOOD MOVIE posted on 08 April 2009

This is by far the best christmas movie of all time because its mixture of comedy and some sort of actions.

The strange thing is that i am watching this movie at the this very moment, and its not even christmas WEIRD.(By Jay byrne)

Also i have to say this is a christmas classic and should not be put down as a bad kids movie, its alot more than that its a film for all ages.

What is brillant about the acting in this movie...is Joe Pesci!! It really shows his flexibilty as an actor. I mean look at the likes of 'Goodfellas'...he plays a physco gangster!! THen in this film he is funny character with many humbles of fun.(Al Breso)

Its a brillant movie with a great sence of humour,

'Merry Christmas, ya filthy animal........and a happy new year'

  • I love watching this during the holidays posted on 26 July 2009

I love Home Alone 1 and 2, i always watch these two movies during the holidays. These movies will always bring me back to a time when i was
a kid and remember my dad taking my little brother and i to the movies
to see both of these when they were brand new, shortly after my cousin
and i bought them on VHS and watched them all the time. Macaulay Culkin
played a great roll in these movies, and all of those traps he set up
all over the house was so clever and funny to watch, being a typical
child, being angry at his family wishing he would never seen them again,
and when it appears to be so, he greatly misses them all and wishes them
back. All of the other characters in this movie all played great rolls.
I would recommend this movie to anybody who has not yet seen it.

  • Possibly the funniest film I've ever seen? posted on 19 July 2009

What can I say about Home Alone that nobody has ever said? Possibly nothing. Home Alone, to me, is possibly one of the funniest movies ever made. Yes it is full of sentimentality. Yes it is a good wholesome family movie. But it is as anarchic and destructive as any Predator or Clockwork Orange. Any film that gives gives a ten year old unconditional licence to p i s s their pants for a full ninety minutes without repercussion from their parents should always hold a place in our hearts.Macauley Culkin, no matter how much he may annoy us, is adamant of his willingness to be rid of the family unit. We all felt this when we were 11 years old and the fantasy of leaving our parents behind as we become ingratiated in our own behaviour upon the world is undeniable.I may be reading too much into a film that is full of the most basic humour in our nature, but if anyone out there is my age, I'm sure they will feel the same way.In Kevin MacCallister all our childish dreams come true. It's fantasy on the most base level. He takes care of himself, he thwarts the bad guy and he still does it with enough acumen to realise that growing up can' be done on our own. For example Kevin realises that preconceptions can be misjudged when old man Marley comes to his aid just as we're sure that he is also one of the bad guys. These are exactly the same choices we had to deal with when we were the same age, even if we didn't have to make them with quite the same repercussions. But all in all, no matter how much you want to read into this film, it will always be a movie when the little man wins. And we always need that in our lives, no matter how old we are.

  • The Best Christmas Film of the Past 20 Years posted on 19 July 2009

"Home Alone" is a hilarious film about a young boy (Macaulay Culkin) who is accidently left home during the Christmas holidays after the rest of his family goes to Europe. At first Culkin loves the situation, but soon he is scared to death when he learns that burglars Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern are targeting his house. However, Culkin is pretty smart for an eight-year-old and he has plans for them when they attack. Chris Columbus' direction is smart and so is the over-achieving screenplay. This film has a little bit of something for everyone and the fact that the backdrop is the Christmas holidays, only makes it that much more special. All the performers do well and in the end the film also does. 4 stars out of 5.

  • A light-hearted and comical film which entertains with ease posted on 13 July 2009

Although it's cultural impact wasn't that big when the film was first released, Home Alone has survived the test of time and has managed to remain a favourite amongst families two decades after its release. Perhaps it was the film's popularity which made the movie a part of Western pop culture, or maybe it's just the pure magic and entertainment that the film radiates that makes it so loved; regardless, Home Alone has and will remain a classic of the 1990's.But what is it that makes Home Alone such a lovable and enjoyable film?? Well the film has a sure-fire and fool-proof formula that ensures entertainment and amusement throughout the entire film. Firstly it has an 8 year old, funny child as its protagonist (a now famous film character which Macaulay Culkin will always be associated with) which the audience can't help but cheer for; he's so bubbly, cheeky and lovable that we root for him all the way. Secondly it has a pair of bumbling villains that as well as provide comedic value prove to be a duo that prove to be sublime for booing, hissing and the like. Combine these characters with an extremely entertaining, unique and fun story and you have a successful film – this is exactly how Home Alone proved to be so popular during the time of its release. The title says it all: 8 year old Kevin is left home alone after his huge family and extended family (making the Cheaper by the Dozen family seem lightweight) accidentally head off on holiday to Paris without him, amidst all the rush and hullaballoo of Christmas and stressful vacation preparations. At first, Kevin is absolutely ecstatic that he has the whole house to himself – he does whatever he wants, including everything he wasn't allowed to do before – but soon discovers that this new life is very lonely indeed. However his boredom and thirst for excitement is soon delivered in the form of two amateur house burglars, Harry (Joe Pesci) and Marv (Daniel Stern). They spy Kevin's large, empty and expensive-looking house (coincidentally the same one used in Planes, Trains and Automobiles), afterwards realise there's nobody home but a seemingly-harmless 8-year old boy and then put into action their plan of attack. However, Kevin is prepared for such situations and has in fact placed booby traps around the entire house meant for the two burglars. From plummeting irons to red-hot door-knobs, Kevin sits back and relaxes as he watches the two attempt to outdo an 8-year old – and fail. Those watching the film expecting a good part of 90 minutes filled with mayhem, chaos and hilarity as the two hapless burglars attempt to enter the abode of Kevin McCallister will be disappointed, as this only takes place in the final twenty minutes of the film. The rest of the movie (bar the ending, which I'll get to later) is spent setting up these roller-coaster ride of chaotic events – calculated that equates to over an hour. That's a long time to be spent setting up for the main event, which as a result makes it more of the climax of the film. Nevertheless, the audience has to wait for a considerable amount of time to watch an extremely short (albeit entertaining) bunch of scenes. But this time preceding the climax is superbly-directed, well-scripted and very well-made all-round. Director Chris Columbus (who would later direct Mrs. Doubtfire and the first two Harry Potter films) crafts the character and plot development extremely well, resulting in the film being a well-made film instead of being carelessly and slackly made with all concentration being placed on the main event. And the film's climax is also marvellously crafted, managing to be very entertaining, enjoyable and funny and an ideal climax for a movie – the antithesis of an anticlimax. It's definitely worth the wait as we watch Kevin's traps all being triggered by the two burglars – cue cheering from the audience. However the seemingly magical and lovable film is not without its faults: as well as taking too long to establish the main story and action Home Alone has one of the most clichéd movie endings in history, one that would even make thrill-seekers vomit in their own mouths. Prior to this the film was also slightly cheesy, but in a non-interfering way where the film's entertainment overshadows it; but in this final scene it's just so much, and nearly ruins the entire film. But this is the only major fault that mires Home Alone, and in the end it's a very amusing and pleasing romp, one that will no doubt satisfy younger audiences. The film's target audience is too young to know what a clichéd ending is, so in a sense the film doesn't even suffer from a major problem.7.5/10

  • Amazing Christmas classic!! posted on 16 June 2009

I have seen this movie probably 1000 times since I was like 4 or 5 and that was 13 years ago. And I have consistently watched it at least a few times a year and it always seem funny.I do not understand why people on here dislike the movie, they obviously don't have much of a sense of humour to not even laugh at SOME of the jokes. Pesci and Stern are an amazing duel and really the only on screen duel that I actually like more is Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker. Almost everything they said made me laugh out loud, especially Stern, who was Marv.Macauley Culkin had an amazing job in playing the bratty too cute kid. The heartwarming moment at the end of the movie just added to the greatness.I Recommend FOR ALL FAMILIES TO WATCH YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED.

  • Revival of a great film posted on 13 June 2009

I've recently decided to watch this film again and no matter how many times you see it, you simply cannot get bored of it. Every time you watch it, you will notice something you haven't seen before. This film is for all ages, it is a good film choice to watch with the family as there are many anecdotes and lines which will make adults laugh and there are bits of action that will send children in stitches. it flows very well, there is no fluff and you can make sense about what is going on, how things are going pretty much all the way throughout the film. I thought the cast was excellent, all the cast took their parts seriously but aside from Culkin, I think Daniel Stern and Joe Pesci deserve a lot of credit for playing two, idiotic and incompetent burglars who get their notorious reputation broken and humiliated because they get rumbled by many sets of booby traps that foil the bumbling bad guys. This film is a must see and not because I am rating it so highly, but because it is entertaining and comical for everyone of all ages

  • Best Christmas Movie for a new generation of kids posted on 06 November 2009

This movie is heartwarming and wonderful. It's a must-see for kids of all ages. With its holiday music and hilarious scenes, this video defines the meaning of Christmas.

  • It's a family comedy, without the family! posted on 06 February 2009

In this enjoyable Chismas Comedy Classic, viewers are introduced to the Kevin- the youngest child of the Mcallister family. Being an 8 year old, Kevin is continuously bullied and treated unrespectfully by his older brother- Buzz, and all the other kids in his family. The holiday-tradition for the Mcallisters every holiday, is that they leave home with their cousin-family, who are equally rude to him as his own family are. Kevin is annoyed and angry, and wishes that he never had a family. Watch out Kevin, your wish just might come true.

It is on the morning of the Mcallister holiday, that Kevin's wish comes true. He is left at home, he has the whole house to himself! But trouble begins to brew when sleazy robbers- Marv and Harry 'the wet bandits' plan to rob his house, Keving is in hot water. This hilarious comedy-film will show you that children in some ways, are as superior to adults.

  • A Timeless Classic posted on 23 May 2009

This movie was wonderful. It contained the whole package if you ask me.It was hilarious, entertaining, and worth your time, because it even teaches valuable life lessons. This movie was great, and I don't see why anyone shouldn't call it a classic, even if they hated it.It might have got just a little annoying at some parts, but mainly this movie delivered.I think that these are the types of movies that make your life worth something.I know that sounds weird, but every movie that falls under family comedy, or family drama, is most of the time charming and heartwarming, and you can't find that with any other genre of film except MAYBE romance.Go see this film if you haven't, for you are missing out on something great.

  • Ignore me posted on 15 May 2009

If that kid screamed one more time, I really might have had to hurt him. I truly didn't like this movie - but it's just me. I don't care for The Three Stooges, either, and this was just like one of their skits: gag after gag after gag. But that's not all that bugged me. I like Robin Williams and his gags, but there's a message behind his films. A point. A moral. Home Alone was just plain stupid. Kids, yeah, kids would like it, but I can't imagine a thinking, intelligent adult deigning to spend an evening watching this hogwash.

  • I hate to admit it... posted on 31 March 2009

...but I really enjoyed this movie! It was actually quite clever in parts, like when he orders the pizza. I laughed all the way through! I've heard and read a lot of negative comments on the violent (for lack of a better word) content of this film. Personally, I grew up watching Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck duke it out every Saturday morning, but I never dropped an anvil on my brother or my sister's head!!! Kids are smarter than we think. So get this movie, sit down with your children and laugh. If you've been a good parent, they won't take a blowtorch to anyone's head!

  • One of the best Christmas movies ever made! posted on 24 March 2009

this is a classic Christmas movie. the plot, cast, and the acting are all top notch. the story is about young kevin who gets left behind when his family leaves for Paris. while alone, he must fend off two bumbling burglars while his family is on a desperate race against time to return home. the acting by young mac is exceptional. his performance is one of the reasons this movie was a huge hit way back in 1990. i also love home alone 2 but i think 3 and 4 are crap. 1 and 2 are the best. the new DVD is great. it is packed with tons of special features including 15 deleted scenes/alternate takes, games, a making of featurette, how to burglar proof your home featurette and more. the deleted scenes are hilarious. one of them is an alternate take when uncle frank is passing out shrimps and buzz takes a tray full. if you're a fan of this movie you should get this DVD. it's great. since i bought this DVD i have watched it numerous times. you will not be disappointed with this DVD. i also wish they would release a new DVD of the sequel.

  • An all time classic! posted on 21 March 2009

I remember watching this movie all the time while I was growing up. I never got bored of it. The gags are funny, the acting is great and the atmosphere is quite scary actually. The music is also quite haunting. Candy was also brill in his cameo The plot is well-known, so I can't be bothered to get into it but the thing I love the most about this movie and the 2nd one is the lovely subplots thrown in. The one with that old man who's supposedly a killer is done in a lovely way and it really sends out a message of don't judge people by their appearances. The end as well SPOILER where the guy is reunited with his family because of kevin's advice is one of the most touching moments I've ever seen on film in my life! This movie is brill 10/10

  • Always a good movie posted on 03 April 2009

We've all grown up with this, what can I say, it's a fun movie that takes me back. I love it even as an adult!

  • My #1 Christmas Movie Ever! posted on 20 February 2009

I love that opening music in this movie. Macauly Culkin at a young age is extremely talented and funny in this movie. I didn't see this movie until I saw it at school and I loved it! Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern are a hoot in this film as the burglars, John Heard and Catherine O'Hara make great parents. Allthough I feel sad for those poor burglars who got hurt so bad. Another good reason to watch this is it's one of John Candy's Last Films as The Polka King Of The Midwest.

  • a great guy posted on 13 February 2009

It's very interesting story about clever boy.Why is that everybody don't like him without any reason? There is a very bed mistake.Anyway I love this movie and saw it a thousend times. And Kevin a great guy.And he is certainly right about everything. He is very amazing actor too. That's so funny

  • WHY NO SPECIAL EDITION??? posted on 02 November 2009

This is more of a rant than a review. But I have to ask why is there no special editon of this movie? It's one of the highest grossing movies of all-time. I believe at one time it was the highest grossing comedy. Maybe still is. It's become a holiday classic right up there with the greats.

And yet, all we get is a poor DVD transfer with only a theatrical trailer for an extra?

Home Alone is a great movie. Every kids dream to have the run of the house, especially if you do have a large family. The movie has humor, slapstick action, warmth...it's a great movie.

Certainly, since all of the particulars are still living and active (except John Candy) we should be able to get some kind of commentary, maybe some current interviews, deleted scenes, etc..

Hopefully the studios will come around on this one soon.

  • Why not in the Top 250 movies of all time? posted on 29 January 2009

I don't know how this movie isn't in the top 250 movies of all time. This is a great family movie, maybe you all don't remember the "HOME ALONE" hype when this movie came out, everyone was talking about this, i hardly heard anyone say anything bad about this, this movie has dated well, its still a hilarious family movie with a positive message at the end. M. Culkin is truly an awesome actor. Daniel Stern & Joe Pesci make made really good burglars, their slapstick is just awesome. In my opinion Home Alone 2: Lost In New York is just as good as this one. Their timeless classics, a great Christmas or feel good movie for any occasion. If you haven't seen this movie i recommend that you go rent it or borrow it from someone. A highly recommended family / comedy movie. A perfect 10 / 10
