I took a group of young people who were the same age as the protagonists and it appealed to us all. I agree with the other post, the Wilson guy worked a thankless script into a great minor character. It is good to have a movie for a certain age demographic (too old for PG, too young for R). It also shows how they think and maneuver in junior high school. You had to love how well Jimmy Buffet did as the cool teacher. He kept us adults awake. The level of kids questioning authority was kept reasonable. Their motives were specific and not like some A.D.D. rebel. The setting and music were beautiful. Overall, if you enjoyed Holes, this is really similar.

  • Hoot is Amazing, Mullet Fingers, aka Cody Linley is so Hot! posted on 22 Aug 2009

Oh my god!!!! Hoot is so good. Mullet fingers, aka Cody Linley is soooooooooooo HOT!!!!!!!!! Oh my god, I am so freaking' serious. I was sad when he got bit by the dog, but he looked so hot in that scene. Beatrice was really good too. Roy started as a total nerd. I'm talking, tucked in shirt, tall socks, all of it. He gets better towards the end. THe owls are adorable. They are soo cute. Mullet is soooooo HOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can't stand it. If you don't think he's hot, you're stupid. The end it the best. The mother Paula's people got what was coming to them. Mullet had a six pack and a pair of guns, and i'm talking muscals. It is a must see. I'm going to see it again.

  • Nice movie! posted on 03 Jul 2009

This movie was pretty good. It had a nice upbeat tone throughout and was a pleasant experience to watch. It's about a kid who moves to Florida and, in addition to being hassled as the 'new kid' at school, gets involved with learning the about the mysterious "barefoot kid" and some little critters in need of help. What keeps this movie moving along are two things. One is great acting performances by Logan Lerman (lead role), Brie Larson (scary tough girl) and Luke Wilson (police officer). The other is the intrigue level the story maintains by slowly revealing things about the characters and the story. All in all, this is a pretty nice, well-made, upbeat movie that just can appeal to both kids and adults.

  • Finally! A family film about eco terrorism! posted on 30 May 2009

I normally don't watch family films. However my high school went to a movie, and they had to choose something PG (Don't ask me why a high school had to watch something PG, it was kind of annoying). So keep in mind this is coming from a jaded adolescent.Hoot is supposed to be a fun family film. Being that it isn't meant to be incredibly good, but entertaining. On that front it succeeds to some degree. The problem with it is when it starts to get preachy and actually have a point. While having some sort of point isn't always bad, and is sometimes common in this sort of film, the whole "Break your back for silly little nature critters" idea isn't well supported, and makes you beg for the overused "You can do anything you set your mind to" message that family films usually sport.Granted, I did legitimately enjoy a fair portion of the humor, and the story is pretty compelling for the first part of the movie. It starts to drag once you actually know whats happening, which is never a good sign.Back to the preaching part. It is quite annoying. It might be less annoying if your political position is that of optimistic environmentalism, but if you are any bit jaded (which granted, most people are) you will be severely annoyed, even more so if your kids get all worked up over it. Especially considering the main characters are a bunch of eco terrorists, granted friendly and lovable ones who don't actually kill people.Overall it's a decent family flick. Hovever I really wouldn't bother seeing it in theaters. Maby rent it when you need to sedate your kids for a bit once it comes out on video.

There is hope for the Real Florida. This movie is for all people with kids and/or hope. As individuals, we forget, or fail to realize, that we can have an influence on events around us. This film is to remind us we can have a major impact on seemingly minor situations.Adults and younger will realize what is important in our quickly changing environment.Make sure that someone who needs to be reminded of local, personal and global priorities sees this film.Without mentioning... all Parrotheads must spread the gospel.

  • Lets give an enjoyable Hoot posted on 14 May 2009

The story is incredible, it begins with a new kid in town named Roy, while on the bus to school, he notices a kid running with no shoes, and on that same day he breaks the big bullies nose who is trying to fight with him. Roy soon discovers that kid is a runaway, and he and his step sister are trying to mess a construction sight, that could kill all the beautiful owls that live there. Roy decides to help them him there fight, Can they win this fight before the smart but bumbling cop Dave Delinko(Luke Wilson) Stumbles on to them. An enjoyable film, funny and adventurous. I do admire Luke Wilson for taking this role. I don't think his brother Owen would even take this role.

  • "My Parents Told Me Florida Was So Sunny And Gorgeous, That Everyone In America Wanted To Live There. Everyone Except Me." --- Roy Eberhardt (Logan Lerman) posted on 30 Apr 2009

"Hoot" (2006) Directed By: Wil Shriner Starring: Luke Wilson, Logan Lerman, Brie Larson, Cody Linley, Clark Gregg, Robert Wagner, Tim Blake Nelson, & Jessica Cauffiel MPAA Rating: "PG" (mild bullying and brief language) "Hoot" was critically-ignored and most audiences simply shrugged it off as an instantly forgettable film that lacked most, if not all, of the ingredients necessary to make a good movie. I, more or less, found it to be much of the same thing. Other than the lack of energy and fun, there are not that many negatives concerning "Hoot". The problem is that there aren't that many positives either. It is a movie that floats somehow in limbo, neither establishing itself as either being a good or a bad film. "Hoot" has a heart that is just about as big as they come, but it has no brain to control that heart. The message the film has, concerning rescuing the environment and saving wildlife, is muddled by an almost inane plot and constantly sappy dialog. Our heroes are three preteens who decide to stop law-breaking businesspeople from ruining an area where burrowing owls live…by breaking even more laws than the supposed "villains" were originally. And what happens in the end? The preteens are rewarded and all of the crimes they have committed are forgotten. Is this the way the world works? Absolutely not. In fact, had the "heroes" simply done the research that they did at the end of the movie at the beginning of the movie, this entire film could have been wrapped up in fifteen minutes flat. Herein lies the major problem, the plot, for a family movie, becomes too convoluted and overly-complicated whereas it should have stayed far simpler.Roy Eberhardt (Lerman) is the new kid at school, after moving with his family from Montana to Florida. After accidentally getting in plenty of trouble on his very first day, Roy wants to fit in and find friends. He attempts to do so with a kid known only to him as "The Barefoot Kid" (Linley) who runs faster than anyone he has ever seen and without any shoes. But, "The Barefoot Kid" will not even give him the time of day. Meanwhile, a new pancake house is being opened in the town and a string of vandalism has been occurring on or around this site. Officer David Delinko (Wilson) is on the case, but everything seems to be going wrong for him. Naturally, "The Barefoot Kid" is the one committing these crimes and he is doing so to rescue the home of numerous burrowing owls that cannot stand up for themselves. Roy decides to help "The Barefoot Kid" (a.k.a Mullet Fingers) and his stepsister, Beatrice (Larson), take on the bad guys and save the day. Just by reading this plot, you can probably decide how the movie will begin and end and you will probably be very close, even as close as guessing some of the dialog exactly as it is heard. How can this movie have any surprises or any entertainment when it is so painfully predictable and clichéd? Did the writers want to give everything about the movie away within the first twenty minutes? If so, then they succeeded. The acting in "Hoot" was rather ho-hum to say the least. Luke Wilson was on and off here. There were times I could see right through his thin performance and there were other times when I actually believed him. Unfortunately, it was just an overall uneven performance. Logan Lerman is a child actor so I didn't expect much. I got a little more than I expected and he handled himself well. Brie Larson gives as much depth as she can to her unbelievable and deeply artificial character. She does okay. Cody Linley is likable and, like Larson, tried to give life to his rather flat character. The problem was not the actors. It was the writers who didn't seem to care at all about the characters with which they populated their script. Clark Gregg plays a miserably annoying, grating, and laughable character. I didn't buy it. Is money so tight for Robert Wagner that he feels the need to star in such a bit role in such a mediocre film? Tim Blake Nelson gives a very comical performance. I liked it. The rest of the cast did their bests, though no one really stood out. When "Hoot" ended, I was stumped. Was "Hoot" a well-made movie? Not particularly. Well-acted? Not particularly. Was it a good movie? Hmm, that is the kicker. Well, if you are part of a particular group of movie-goers, then yes, it probably is good. This group is for anyone from the age of six to twelve. I do not fall in that age range and so I found "Hoot" to be rather blah film that had a wonderful heart, but absolutely no brains. It just didn't do anything to prove that it had any intelligence whatsoever. "Hoot" flounders greatly in logic and creativity and becomes more and more like a schlock sitcom with every minute. With all of this said and against my better judgment, I must recommend this slightly. Why, you ask? I find myself asking myself the same exact question. When a movie is just as mediocre as "Hoot" was, I would expect myself to criticize it, tell you all to skip it, and then leave it at that. But, with "Hoot", I cannot do that. Because, as plain and as uneventful as it is, its target audience will enjoy it…even if it is because they don't know any better. However, if I must recommend it, I say that you will probably want to catch it on television. There just isn't enough to warrant a rental, for me.Final Thought: The target audience will like "Hoot"…though everyone else will find it to be predictable and unbelievable.Overall Rating: 5/10 (B-)

  • Two Ways Of Dealing With A Problem (Spoilers) posted on 06 Apr 2009

In "Hoot", Mullet Fingers is engaging in sabotage to stop the pancake house. The problem is that the builders just start over again, and he has to take more drastic measures. When he is confronted with the dogs, he scares them off with snakes, not before he is bitten by a dog and has to go to hospital.Roy at bedtime asks his father, who works with the Department of Justice, how he deals with crooks. His father says it involves the tedious steps of looking through papers, because sooner or later, they all slip up. You can see this with Enron and WorldCom. Roy looks at documents relating to the pancake house, and finds a suppressed document (he does have to break in to the company trailer), so when the police see it, he has the law on his side. Unlike when he evaded the police.Mind you, as mentioned before, Roy is not always law-abiding, and when the company man is killing owls (illegally), Mullet Fingers takes direct action. He can't wait for the law (Mullet Fingers is in hiding). The movie does suggest that one should work in the system.

  • Sweet and enjoyable family movie with a strong message inside. posted on 05 Mar 2009

Saw the movie a couple of days ago on DVD. I believe it was basically fair adaptation of Carl Hiassen's bestselling novel, which I've read recently and also enjoyed. I liked the movie too and the only serious problem for me was its short runtime. I suppose that making a movie as short as it is possible it's a dream of any director/producer/screenwriter but that's not the best approach. In Hoot they cutted some parts of the book which caused that the scenes in the movie are not always well connected with each other. However much more important thing is that bright satirical stile of Hiassen's novel has survived in the movie making it a decent choice both for children and grownups. This kind of humor is not crude and vulgar as we used to see in most of modern comedies but just sweet and lively. Add also beautiful shots of wild nature, original story with quirky characters and good message inside. Combine all of this together and in the result you'll get Hoot, one of the best family movies of the year, very lively and enjoyable. The acting is at least decent, particularly for that kind of movies. Logan Lerman who's indeed a very talented actor was very good as the main character. He impressed me in his previous works I've seen before (leading roles in "A Painted House" and "The Butterfly Effect") and this movie didn't become an exception. Overall all young actors' performances are uniformly strong and likable. Much more surprising for me was Luke Wison's performance. He was simply terrific in his supporting role of officer Delinko that every his appearance on screen at least brought a smile to my face. It's impossible not to mention also excellent performance of Tim Blake Nelson (Curly Branitt) with perfectly suitable for his character accent and both John Archie and Robert Donner in their little but memorable supporting parts. The last thing but not the least is the music. Never been interested in Jimmy Buffett music before and to be honest never heard of him before I watched a trailer for Hoot featured his song from the movie. Anyway his style has caught my attention and even bought two of his albums. His compositions featured in the movie including final theme "Good Guys Win" perfectly fit in the movie, they are so much riveting, lighthearted and lively. There is also a fragment of Brie Larson's song in the movie which is too short to create an opinion on her vocal talents or lack of them. I've almost forgotten one of the most important things about Hoot. The owls are really cute and so beautiful. Overall grade: 8 out 10. It definitely has its flaws and most likely it won't win any significant award but it's one the most likable and enjoyable family movies I've seen recently and what's even more important it's heart is in the right place.

  • Another Green Fable from Carl Hiassen posted on 11 Feb 2009

Mr. Hiassen has been writing so-called adult fiction for years, and it was only a matter of time before his personal brand of lightweight storytelling found its true niche in the cineplex: the 'family' film. This picture does give me hope... perhaps a brave producer will finally greenlight Edward Abbey's "The Monkey Wrench Gang." Alas, that would be a movie for grown-ups.Back to "Hoot": My 9-year-old daughter enjoyed it, especially the young boy playing "Mullet Fingers." This fact made me lose sleep. Will she bring home some sun-bleached beachcomber when she starts dating? Will he be a wholesome version of an eco-terrorist, too? Egads.Don't get me wrong. My complaint is not with the movie's politics, but how it dumbs things down. After the movie matinée, I took my youngster along the Bay's edge and went birdwatching for an hour. Something I should've done in the first place.

  • Great Family Movie - Highly recommend posted on 23 Dec 2008

I highly recommend this movie to everyone. My son and I read the book first and then saw the movie. While the book was better (in my opinion) the movie was still great. My son and I agree that while we like the book version the best, we liked the ending of the movie better than the book ending. The scenery is just tremendous and the soundtrack is a must have. The fact that Jimmy Buffett has a small role and provides music is an added plus. Luke Wilson does a decent job in his role of Officer Delinko and is pretty much what I had mentally imagined Delinko would look like when I read the book. I'm surprised that this didn't do better in the theaters, and I'll be waiting for the DVD to come out.

  • A dreadful movie posted on 19 Dec 2008

This was clearly among the worst movies I saw all year, and I'm an environmentalist. It simply didn't work as art. Nothing about this film was believable. No parents would force their child to apologize without even asking his side. Normal curiosity would have prevented this. The central character wouldn't have been stalking people who clearly wanted nothing to do with him. No hospital would have treated a kid for an injury not life-threatening without his parents permission and proof of insurance. No developer would have held children against their will. This is felonious behavior. People go to prison for this. At every turn the screenplay was amateurish; the story line made no sense at all!

  • We must learn from it. posted on 19 Nov 2008

I saw the movie "Hoot" and then I immediately decided to comment it. The truth is that NATURE needs protection from us because we are the dominant specie of this planet. Some people think that if they have money, they can do whatever they want to, which probably is like, but if they think about the future more then they think about themselves they would do something useful! This movie is not just about kids, this movie is showing us that the kids are usually the ones that care more about it then the adults do. When I was twelve, I saw some waterlilies and I knew they are protected by law and didn't even dare to touch them not fearing of the law, but fearing that I might harm them actually. (I am currently 15) What so ever, the acting was great, the 3 main characters are well interpreted and we all have to learn from them. I hope you all think about what you saw in that movie!!! and Enjoy!

  • Plain and simple, a NICE movie posted on 12 Oct 2008

My family (two 40-somethings, an 8 year old and my 71 yr old mother) saw this at a sneak preview on April 29th. We all enjoyed the movie very much. The story was a good one, and knowing it was based on real-life events made it that much more enjoyable. Luke Wilson was a hoot (pun intended) to watch as was Tim Blake Nelson. And seeing Neil Flynn play something other than "the mean janitor from Scrubs" was nice. The kids in movie did well and I'm sure they will all appeal to a certain demographic on the heartthrob level. The visuals were just lovely and the Jimmy Buffet music added to the "Florida feel". OK, maybe the story was a little too neat and well packaged for some adults, but hey, who cares? I can't compare it to the book, I honestly hadn't heard of it until the movie came out. It was just a NICE movie and it had a good message. Plain and simple.

  • Touches of TV & Youth in One Theater Movie. posted on 08 Sep 2008

Logan Lerman & Dean Collins III of Jack & Bobby Fame provide a nice touch of familiarity as friends in this even if not maybe as close as they may be on Jack & Bobby but the expressions of young students taking their stand for a good cause is very well expressed in this movie.Logan Lerman may be seemingly typecast in roles of being "different" as thusly seen from here as is seen in this as well as in Jack and Bobby. The Movie also opens up with a very nice tune coined as a lost 45 "And I'm Wondering where the lions are?"A song which I'd Always heard on the speaker @ my old Job of ChristmasTreeShops and got it played on my local radio show of The Lost45s hosted by Barry Scott but the last time of which I suggested this with this movie as it's dedication but the dedication was left out.Environmentalist demonstration is well expressed in this movie too for the protection of the ground owls as seen in this movie too. What a hoot too this movie is.Hoot,Sogive a hoot in the tradition of the Woodsey Owl Commercials of the 1970s too. Truthfully, Stephen "Steve" G. Baer a.k.a."Ste".

  • Hoot is a good family film posted on 23 Aug 2008

It is great to see a film starring kids whose idea of "acting adult" is not engaging in sensuality. Instead, these kids see a problem in their community and take responsibility for helping to solve it. Hoot is a film aimed squarely at families looking for a fun day at the cinema. The production values are good, especially sweeping shots of Montana and Florida. The soundtrack by Jimmy Buffet is a perfect fit. The young actors are spirited and refreshing. The plot, about a trio of kids who work together to save some burrowing owls from death at the hands of an unscrupulous pancake house empire builder, will engage kids. So many films make children appear powerless, it is nice to see a movie that shows children working hard to make a difference. And even though parents are absent or temporarily distracted, it was pleasant to see kids who want to follow in their parents footsteps and try to right injustices. If you are tired of all of the self-indulgent story lines about children that fill the cinema, give Hoot a shot. Then take some time to talk to your kids about the adventure of serving others and caring about the world they live in. A positive message from a positive film.

  • Great posted on 07 Aug 2008

I read the book in a summer book club, and all of us there loved it. My friends from that club agreed not to watch the movie, lest the book be ruined. I didn't agree, and watched it recently with my younger brother and my parents.I was pleasantly surprised. The movie was very true to the book, without losing it's own spirit. The 'new kid' theme was shown just enough so that we get a feel of it, but that's not what the story's about. The acting wasn't the best I've ever seen, but it was still good, and the kids especially had a lot of energy. The characters were interesting, and the plot was cute and not too overstated. It was a kids movie that works just fine for adults or teenagers, too.I wish there had been a bit more tough-girl attitude from Beatrice, but she was still a great character. Mullet Fingers was quite a bit like I had imagined him, except his hair was a little obviously dyed, with blonde hair and dark eyebrows. Roy worked very well as the little guy and the new kid, especially interactions with his parents and friends. The message and the ending (which I won't discuss other than I liked it) teamed up to make a great cheer-up movie for a rainy day. All in all, this was a great film that you can watch again and again whenever you need reminding that the world isn't a horrible place after all.

  • Fun Movie for the Fam posted on 14 Jul 2008

The first time I saw this movie, I brought my 10 year old sister and she loved it. I thought it was pretty good (though I've never read the book) It was nice to see some of the big names in a smaller movie. The day I brought my sister to it was the best time we had in a long time and so whenever I watch it, I think about what a great time we had together. If you want to spend some quality time with your family, this is a great movie with an amazing cast and really awesome music! I love Jimmy Buffet! The meaning and lesson in this movie is also a nice one, we don't see many movies like this anymore. We usually so busy with our own lives in our own little worlds that it is nice to take a break for about two hours to watch this movie. The quality of the acting/filming is pretty good too, which is another plus.

  • Definitely a movie for kids, and kids only posted on 12 Jul 2008

If you're a kid liking fairy tale "real life" adventures, see it. If you're a youth liking kids movies, why not see it? :) If you're a parent going to see a movie with your kids, you're WAY better of opting for the squirrel! The start of this film was a bit funny, and set some good premises for the happenings to take place. But after the kind of funny introduction of characters, settings and potential conflicts, the story turned out kinda dull. When more or less the same things happen for the third and fourth time, the word "predictable" repeatedly comes to mind just like parts of a dented LP or those commercials you really hate. And the culmination of the plot... *oh sigh*... poor, poor, poor!
