  • Charlie Kaufman Should Sue posted on 02 May 2006

David O. Russell seems a bit of a fink to me.. each film he comes out with is capitalising on a current trend. In this case, he has a go at Charlie Kaufman-style 'oddball' movies, but not as a parody of such, just getting in on the act to be critically acclaimed or whatever (if he was doing it to make money like with 3 kings, I think he picked the wrong genre this time). The film is entertaining enough, in a Sunday afternoon distraction kinda way. Nothing to taxing on the brain. Which is a shame, as it seems to WANT to be something more than it is. Not that there's anything wrong with a no-brainer, it's just a no-brainer disguised as a sophisticated intellectual comedy must be regarded with some dubiety..Jason Schwartzman is great in this, as always, Dustin Hoffman is on 'kinda mental' mode (which is always fun) and some of the other actors are good- but Marky Mark is sleeping through the movie.. he seems confused (which doesn't fit with his character, so it can't be acting), and the less said about Jude Law's bizarre Christopher Walken impression, the better.Like I say- not bad, just don't expect too much.

  • Existential Detectives posted on 30 Apr 2006

This film brings together veterans Lily Tomlin & Dustin Hoffman (and a small role for Tippi Hedren) with young folks like Jude Law. It is an R rated comedy with sexual situations. It has plenty of language that is locker room oriented and some adult themes.Overall, it was nice to see some of the cast members working together but the film seems to wander from scene to scene with no continuity or common sense. As a comedy film, there are no complex gags, just some short & simple ones. There are a few laughs.Tough thing is because it doesn't have a real hook to interest the viewer, it literally put me to sleep. I am going to have to view it again to see the parts I slept through. Existential Detectives need more excitement. Its seems they are too busy being existential which is the essence of being detached. If being detached is the goal, this script definitely makes it. Usually though, the great films engage the viewer. This film throws out lots of ideas, kind of like brainstorming only without a brain or centralized theme to work with or around.

  • Great Movie for Thinking Adolescents posted on 28 Apr 2006

Look at the IMDb User Ratings by Age. I looked and found exactly what I expected: the Over-45 group panned the movie, and it increased in popularity as the age of the reviewer declined. It's wacky and philosophical, but with the depth of a college freshman bull session. So if you're still at the age where it's *exciting* to have thoughts like "What if we're all really just characters in someone else's dream," then this is a great movie for you.OTOH, if you're a totally non-thinking adolescent, then there aren't enough chase scenes or gross jokes. Or you would be put off by its unconventionality.I'd have liked this movie when I was 17. But I'm over 45.

  • Very disappointing David O. Russell movie posted on 28 Apr 2006

If you love SPANKING THE MONKEY, FLIRTING WITH DISASTER, and THREE KINGS, then congratulations, you have great taste in movies. They're funny, intriguing, surprising, and and compelling. You might think David O. Russell is a genius. If you think like that, then spare yourself major disillusionment and skip this movie. It's got a few good lines, and funny situations, but is otherwise totally uninvolving. Characters yell and scream and run around for no reason and wonder what the point is. So do audiences. It's a scattershot movie that can't decide whether it's a satire or a philosophical exercise. Instead, it's just a muddle.

  • Dumbest Movie Ever posted on 27 Apr 2006

This movie was absolutely horrible. A complete wasted of time!!! THe only reason I gave it two stars is b/c the actors did a good job, but it was completely ruined by the story line. It didnt even make any sense..............absolutely terrible.......what a dissapointment

  • <3 posted on 25 Apr 2006

yesterday i finally gave myself a chance to watch i <3 huckabees, which was really funny and i liked it, but gosh darnit, i don't know why.

a tree hugger (jason silverman) seeks out the services of some existential detectives (dustin hoffman, lily tomlin) to try to understand why he keeps seeing this super tall freak all over the place.

a fireman (marky mark) is suffering from trying to understand something about petrolium oil.

a sales exec (jude law) is trying to move to the top of the pecking order at Huckabees, a national mall chain or something.

there's all these identity and existential crises that probably made a bunch of hipster college kids choke their charlie while snapping their fingers in that cool cool way. it's not that i don't understand this stuff; i ponder it and my navel daily on a variety of planes. maybe it's the quirky energy? i don't know. it will take a while to figure it all out.

  • More like I Heart HuckaBORING! posted on 24 Apr 2006

All I have to say is WOW! With all the talented writers, actors, directors and other people out there with good independent films that deserve theatrical releases, Hollywood decides to unleash such BORING crap as this flick titled I HEART HUCKABORING. I'm at a lost for words. What's going on here? Why? There's better talent and indie filmmakers releasing their films straight to video that deserve to have their probably BETTER films taking the place of this film on the big screens. This movie is pointless. I'm speechless. I'm so shocked at how such a film as this exists that I can't write anymore on this. It's just unbelievable.

  • The Height of Ignorance posted on 23 Apr 2006

The reason I decided to see this film is because philosophy (specifically existentialism and phenomenology) was my course of study in college. I also enjoyed Jason Schwartzman a great deal in Rushmore, but I haven't seen too much of his work outside of Rushmore. I would consider myself an existentialist, and I am an avid fan and reader of existentialist and postmodern philosophy; I love Camus, Sartre, Kierkegaardand, Freud, Heidegger, and my personal favorite, Nietzsche.

I hate to start the review like that, but I was afraid that if I didn't the Personal Taste Police that are so active here would simply declare, "He doesn't get it, ignore his review."

All of that being said, this is an incredibly ignorant, poorly written, poorly conceived, inaccurate, meaningless pile of drivel. If you have any actual knowledge of, or interest in, philosophy or specifically existentialism, stay away from this film. It will only make you very angry and you will be dumber for having had the experience.

If you have no real interest in existentialism or philosophy, but you think it would be fun and impressive to pretend like you do, then this movie is for you. If you and your friends sit around massaging one another's egos with pseudo-intellectual BS, this film is for you. If you assume that someone is smart because they talk fast and are never able to communicate their ideas clearly, this film is for you. If you spend time with people who are very dull and will be impressed by the fact that you like this film, and therefore "get it", then it is also for you.

The frustrating thing is, regardless of intelligence, most people are smart and self-aware enough to know their own limitations. I Heart Huckabees does not and the pseudo-intellectuals who made it are mind bogglingly self-indulgent and lacking in self-awareness. For that reason, this film deserves a special place atop the dung heap of faux art.

  • The worst movie I have seen in years, possibly ever posted on 06 Apr 2006

When my wife and I sat down to view the movie, we admitted to each other that we had not the slightest clue what this movie was bout, despite having seen previews for it. That's because it's not about anything. How can you convey the essence of a movie in a 2 minute preview if you can't convey its essence in a 2 hour movie? The movie is strange in that you can tell it's well directed and well acted, and even the premise of an "existential detective" is amusing on its surface, but you keep waiting for it to go somewhere and it never does.I'll leave it at that. Suffice it to say that it's one of the few movies I've ever wanted to simply turn off halfway through.Don't rent it.

  • not for everyone i suppose posted on 04 Apr 2006

i can see how some folks might not like this film. i loved it. watts and wahlburg are especially brilliant. i didn't like shwartzman in rushmore - in fact, i saw it several times and liked it less each time. but here he's not at all smug. huppert is of course awesome.i have to say this is a film that many film geeks might have wanted to write, but after a few tries, the energy, the nerve, she fades. how much chutzpah would it take to try to convince people to be interested in this film based on the fabled 20-second elevator speech? a shitload i think.some reviews have said the film runs out of steam two thirds through - i say humbug. this guy is way sharper than kaufman - being john malkovich was a one-concept joke that got old after the first scene. and adaptation was one third of a good movie with lots of filler. huckabees is much more serious - really. it's fresh and earnest yet evasive and fast - but with plenty of substance.

  • An enjoyable film posted on 28 Mar 2006

This is a film you need to just watch and know nothing about to truly enjoy. I will try not to ruin it for you if you have not seen it. I originally just put it on for background noise, and then I found myself watching it. I really enjoyed this movie.

The cast is of this movie is amazing. Tomlin, Hoffman and Law deliver excellent performances. But the true star of this film has to be Jason Schwartzman. His acting is above par. And I must admit I enjoyed watching Mark Wahlberg having to act. A well done to all the actors in this project.

This is defiantly not a mainstream film, so be prepared. The movie has Schwartzman's character who is afflicted with human emotions higher an unusual team of detectives to find clues to what is happening in his life. Which leads us on a playful, yet quirky, quest for truth.

  • AMAZING!!! Let's even out the score here. posted on 27 Mar 2006

I ALMOST didn't see this due to all of the negative comments left on IMDb. Things like "torture" and "I hate huckabee's" My fault, never go by anyone else's review, including this one. If you think this movie looks good from the trailer, then see it. Take the chance, as I learned.I loved this movie. It made sense and it was a great story and it was not pretentious. It's an amazing character driven movie that was wonderfully crafted and hysterical. Great cast and story. That's all I have for you folks reading this. Check it out. If you get it...you'll like it.

What a piece of dreck. Jude Law sounds like a fool trying to sound like he has an American accent. Never realized how much easier it is to sound like a Brit convincingly as opposed to sounding like a Yankee until watching Law and the rest of this stellar cast suffering thru this insufferable movie. Considering how good Three Kings was it's hard to believe how BAD Huckabees and it's pretentious mutation of what the heart symbol means, could be. HELLO--- I heart Huckabees is not the title of this movie, David, it's I LOVE Huckabees. Not that it matters cause this movie is a disaster from the first frame to the last. Trying to tell people that the heart meant heart instead of love was just a warning sign to anyone who cared to notice. I'm just glad I took it out from the library instead of paying for this piece of garbage, let alone seeing it in the theater.

  • You gotta shop at Huckabees! posted on 24 Mar 2006

Crude language, Wild philosophy taken to an extreme. The attitudes and language are what makes this movie rated R. Even though it may seem like all fun and games, and you may not want to say otherwise, you know it's more than that. Looking at the title, it sounds like it could be another comedic happy go lucky film. Right about the comedic part, but so wrong on everything else. There are hearts broken in ways you wouldn't have imagined, two Huckabee models and "everything else Huckabees." Jason Schartzman plays the main character, and I found out that he's the drummer in Phantom Planet, a great pop band! (I hear he's arrogant though, and this fact only would enhance it.) Dustin Hoffman and Jude Law are in it. Mark Wahlberg is truly convincing in this one. If you like South Park, Daria, or any kind of toilet humor, this movie may just be for you.

  • You Should See This Movie posted on 20 Mar 2006

I watched this movie with my fourteen year-old brother and we both loved it. My brother normally can not sit through movies this complicated. So, I do not understand how anyone could get bored watching this movie. The premise, acting, philosophical layers, and comedy make this movie watchable over and over again.

  • Multiple choice posted on 20 Mar 2006

    I Heart Huckabees is:

    a) An intelligent, thought-provoking, unique comedy featuring a diverse cast of top-notch talent.

    b) A pretentious, self-indulgent, meandering exercise in cinematic pseudo philosophy.

    I can't decide.

  • A lot of hype, but falls way short. posted on 13 Mar 2006

I heard a lot of good things about this movie before seeing it, but I was very disappointed when I finally got a chance to see it. This movie is in the same category as Punch Drunk Love and Magnolia. Basically it appeals to people who are very artsy in that random things happen that don't make sense unless you let your mind wander and develop your own meaning. I found few scenes funny and I was very annoyed by Jude Law cast as an American executive. He had a British accent that came and went throughout the movie. I can understand casting an American in a British or Irish roll because sometimes Colin Farrell won't cut it, but there are enough American actors out there that there is no need to cast Jude Law in this roll. He is not worth putting up with the accent going in and out. Nothing against Jude Law, I like him as an actor.Bottom line: if you liked Punch Drunk Love you will like this film, otherwise, steer-clear.

  • This one Suckabees! posted on 11 Mar 2006

I have taken the initiative to change the movie title of " I Heart Huckabees" to "I Hate Huckabees". This farce of an existential comedy will definitely exist in my worst films of the year list. Director David O. Russell 's exerted much effort in directing a unique narrative. However, the results were a unique piece of crap. Jason Schwartzman stars as Albert Markovski, an environmentalist who hires existential detectives to determine the reasoning of repeated encounters with a tall-skinny black man. Albert, maybe it's that you like to play basketball! Dustin Hoffman and Lily Tomlin play the existential dicks who's philosophy of interconnectivity disconnected my attention antenna. Jude Law co-stars as Brad Stand, the narcissistic Manager of Huckabees Department Store, who happens to be Albert's primary foe. Law, who was astounding in "Alfie", did not stand tall here. Naomi Watts, Isabelle Huppert, and Mark Wahlberg round out the Huckabees cast. Wahlberg as Tommy, the petroleum-bashing firefighter, was actually the thespian spark of "I Heart Huckabees". Russell's screenplay tried to be too convoluted and eradicated its potential intellect entertainment component; a little K.I.S.S. (keep it simple stupid) should have been on his list! "I Heart Huckabees" did not give me a heart on! ** Needs Improvement

  • I Heart Huckabees posted on 11 Mar 2006

From director David O. Russell (Three Kings), I can agree with the critics that this is a bit of an indescribable film, but in a good way. Basically Albert Markovski (Jason Schwartzman) is the environmental activist who wants husband-and-wife existentialist detectives Bernard (Dustin Hoffman) and Vivian Jaffe (Lily Tomlin) to investigate and solve the coincidence of seeing the same stranger three times in one day. They insist however in investigating his everyday life, while sharing views on life and the nature of the universe, breaking everything in front of them into tiny pieces (literally). As this goes on, Albert develops a dislike for the Huckabees superstore chain, represented by executive Brad Stand (Jude Law), who are sponsoring his "Open Spaces Coalition". So Albert is getting help from the Jaffes, and through them he also gets help saving the planet from bicycle riding fireman Tommy Corn (Mark Wahlberg). Also starring Isabelle Huppert as Caterine Vauban, Naomi Watts as Dawn Campbell, Angela Grillo as Angela Franco, Ger Duany as Mr. Stephen Nimieri, Darlene Hunt as Darlene, The Birds' Tippi Hedren as Mary Jane Hutchinson, Talia Shire as Mrs. Silver, Bob Gunton as Mr. Silver, Kevin Dunn as Marty and Shania Twain. You really need to pay attention to really grasp what's really going on, I can agree this may annoy some viewers, but it is still a good black comedy drama. Very good!

  • I got my hopes up when I read the plot line posted on 09 Mar 2006

When I read the plot line for this movie I became very interested. It seemed that a humorous and intellectual movie was within my grasp. I have often thought about what it seemed this movie claimed to be about. I was somewhat disappointed when I left the movie. It was not a terrible movie, especially when you have so many terrible movies to compare it to. I don't recall laughing at any point, when a few people were actually laughing it was because of some slap-stick move. I think the movie would have been a lot better if they had at least some intellectual humor or at least tried not to fool the audience into thinking that there were intellectual discussions occurring. I think the slow-clap by one person followed by dead silence sums up the quality of this movie. Cheers to the creators for trying to make something unique, anyhow.
