  • Not every hostage wants to be saved!
Plot Summary:
Her goldfish dead, her lover exposed as a rat, Shawn Holloway leaves her bank post and goes to the roof intent on suicide. Before she can leap, she's taken hostage by Charlie Anders, a fleeing bank robber. He and his partners have stolen a million in cash and plan to escape to Venezuela. Shawn agrees to cooperate if Charlie promises to kill her once he's in the clear. Parts of the plan go awry, so Charlie has time to try to pierce her bleak manner and self pity, and she has time for reflection. As night falls, their interlude ends: they're each alone, Charlie facing prison as the police close in, and Shawn staring down at a river from atop a high bridge.

  • Hostage movies tend to be lame. Unless they're 'Kill Me Later" posted on 26 Aug 2009

I'm quite happy to admit that I only watched 'Kill Me Later because it starred Selma Blair and I happen to think she's rather cool (despite 'Hellboy', but I'm happy to chalk that down to a bit her right of a laugh at work). Dana Lustig balances out 'Kill Me Later' with all the food groups necessary to make a motion picture work, pulling together some great performances with an original script and well thought out characters. It's theme stems from the tested movie setup: Two people living out the worst day of their respective lives meet. Gradually add hilarious or terrifying situations as required... But this is turned on it's head to satisfy the black comedy needs of 'Kill Me Later'. I'm fairly sure that the intent of the film is not to make suicide seem funny, so your allowed to laugh.

A brilliant movie. Ilove Selma Blair in this movie because her acting is very, very natural. She seems like she's really depressed, which is good. People may not think it, but she looks really nice in the movie because of the make-up she wears. I also think Max Beasley acted really well in the movie, in fact, this movie is definitely one of my favourites. I keep watching it over and over again. The story is about a lady called Shawn Halloway {Selma Blair} who is depressed because her lover left her and his wife is pregnant, her goldfish died and some customers have called her names. Also, her father left her when she was eleven years old. She's about to jump off the top of a building when Charlie {Max Beasley} holds her hostage. They strike a bargain: she'll help him escape{he's a thief} and he'll kill her later. 24 hours with Charlie change her perspective on life. This story is amazing. Do yourself a favour and buy it

  • Love it! posted on 28 Mar 2009

Big fan of the accents! I loved how they ended up falling in love once he was able to see the person beneath all of her problems. The ending was also beautiful.

  • Acting puts this dark romance over the top posted on 28 Jan 2009

This is a fairly subtle, intelligent, low-budget ride that's propelled
by very good acting and some mother-of-invention film work. Selma Blair does a fine job as a young woman who has had enough and is ready to kill herself at the beginning of the movie, and Max Beesley is both funny and caring as the bank robber who promises to kill her later. Watch it on DVD, and you can enjoy the movie, then listen to the director and producer (both women) talk about the things they had to do to get the movie made on their small budget. If you're into movie-making, it's interesting to hear them talk about the 9 years they kicked the script around and the dozens of drafts for the script and that they finally decided not to sell it when they had a buyer, because they wanted to make it themselves.

  • A wonderful dark comedy posted on 20 Dec 2008

Selma Blair & Max Beesley make an excellent duo for this dark comedy/romance. I laughed, I cried, I hoped they'd get together... Joking, but it is good. Selma Blair's acting talent shines through as this is a side of her I've never seen before. I never thought she was that good of an actress as she always played idiots or some other character that had nothing going for them, but she proved me wrong with this movie. I've never seen Max Beesley before and he was pretty darn good. Not to mention his fabulous English accent! :)

Shawn (Blair) & Charlie (Beesley) come together under odd circumstances in a suicide-robbery gone bad. Charlie takes Shawn hostage after his robbery of her firm goes bad and she promises she'll help him get away as long as he'll kill her when the whole ordeal is over. Things only get stranger from there on. Will they die or won't they? With cops after both now and the prospect of death on both their doors. Both begin to learn things about one another which shows the better days of both and makes you realize how the characters are both generally good people in a really bad point in their lives. By chance they become dependent of one another without knowing it, missing each other when they're apart and willing to give it all up for love.

This movie is great. I saw it by chance and after one viewing it became my favorite movie. If you like dark comedy, romantic lipbiters or movies that catch you by surprise, you have to see this. SEE IT, YOU'LL LOVE IT!

  • Very nice... posted on 15 Nov 2008

Honestly, the only think I can fault are the direction and editing, which can be a little too "I'm try to be arty, look at me!". The movie itself is wonderful: serious, funny, romantic. The script is sharp and the actors were absolutely wonderful. Highly recommended for anyone in the mood for something strange.Be warned: You will see definite ripping off of "A Life Less Ordinary" toward the beginning of the film... but if you're gonna steal, it's good to know they stole from something good.

This is a movie which is a very rare type of movie. This is a funny, but very sad story about a woman named Shawn, who thinks she is leading a life which is horrible. She thinks suicide is the only solution, until she meets a guy who is robbing a bank!! The robber takes her hostage and teaches her the meaning of life and how she should enjoy it. This is a love story which is very fast paced and funny at the same time. This is a movie in which I think should be recognized. This is a must see.

  • Enjoyable posted on 02 Jul 2008

Kill me Later has a concept that has been done to death. The script is a bit immature, but still very much enjoyable. Both Max Beesely and Selma Blair pull in solid performances in this piece. One thing that's enjoyable about this movie is that all of the characters are generally relatable. Selma Blair's Shawn is utterly pessimistic, While Max Beesely's Shawn is hopelessly optimistic about things. The film may be a little contrived but the ending is a little more realistic. It's sweet, it's funny and at moments, you'll want to cry. An enjoyable film.

  • This movie was something special. posted on 04 Jun 2008

This movie was good for the down to earth girl that I am. I loved the way it saw the emotions of the characters. I stay up late whenever it's on just to watch it again. I love how it ends and I love the storyline. It was good because the story was different and intriguing, but still had good old-fashioned love that makes you come back for more. I love the lead characters roles, they were magic together.

  • Great Flick! posted on 12 Nov 2007

This was a great movie!! I jumped in the middle of it and it caught my eye! Boy am I glad that I stayed - this movie has you wanting Charlie and Shawn to get together the whole time (at least I did) They need each other for survival and they finally figure it out at the end! Don't want to give too much away but it was a great suspense up to the end also! I reccomend this movie to anyone!

  • better than average. posted on 09 Nov 2007

Fast and funny. Selma Blair is terrific. Well written and well directed romantic/adventure/comedy about an unhappy bank loan officer played by Blair who is taken hostage by a bank robber while attempting to kill herself by jumping from the roof of the bank. He promises to kill her later if she will help him escape the police.

  • Good Plot and Good Acting posted on 11 Sep 2007

I saw this movie on TV and I really enjoyed it, so much in fact that I bought it. The actors did a great job and played believable roles. There is some dark humor and funny lines. The plot was good and not something seen very often in main screen movies today.
The only bad part of the movie was the editing. The director used weird colors for small snippets, which in my opinion did not help emphasize anything, there were also weird zooms and other odd editing.
Overall though I liked the movie and it is something I can watch again and again. I recommend it..

  • Starts off promising, ends tragically posted on 19 Jul 2007

Welcome to a day in the life of Shawn: a young, depressed, cynical and openly suicidal woman whose life seems all but going down the toilet at lightning speed. The basic grasp of the movie is, we're taken through a timeline of events that happen on the day Shawn decides to die. There are a lot of good flashbacks showing exactly what's going on in her mind, intriguing use of slow motion and speed, and of course, sharp, witty humour. However, with all the dramatic footage to keep your eyes glued to the tv, unfortunately the director takes a horrible turn and the movie just becomes another lame stunt of trying to tell people that their Romeo will come along when you least expect it and they will save you. The movie is both a thriller and soppy romance. It's sad a movie that could have been so deep and meaningful had to turn out this way. But what movie doesn't? Worth watching, but keep your expectations low.

  • A treat for Selma Blair fans posted on 14 May 2007

Although the plot is contrived (Selma Blair, who is trying to end her miserable life by jumping off a building, agrees to be "held hostage" by a young bank robber provided he will "kill me later") the movie is a great vehicle for Ms. Blair, who even manages to impart meaning and smouldering sensuality to her extended smoking scenes. For the type of movie it is, it works well.

  • It is a different type of Love Story posted on 26 Jan 2007

I really liked this film. It is definately a different off beat movie but it is worth seeing! Does anybody know if there is a soundtrack or at least the songs that go to the movie?

  • Fun fluff posted on 03 Oct 2006

"Kill Me Later" is a romantic comedy about a suicidal woman (Blair) who reluctantly takes up with a bank robber on the lam (Beesley) if he promises to shoot her once he's made his escape. What follows is busy enough with side plots, action, and snappy patter to keep the waning eye lid open in spite of the movie's many flaws including unnecessary visual effects, loose ends, Kodak moments which don't work, and a speed bump at the midway mark. Okay for sofa spuds. (C+)

Ultimately slight, but nonetheless cleverly inventive low-budget take on a hoary old film noir plot device. A fleeing armed robber, cornered by a cop on the rooftop of the bank he's just knocked over, unintentionally saves the life of one of the bank's employees-a suicidal young woman who is seconds away from taking her fatal plunge. The desperate criminal soon realizes that Fate has chosen the worst possible person to serve as his "human shield"...someone who WANTS to die! After this setup, I thought I had this one pegged as a slight variation on "Ruthless People" or "The Ref"--but it actually turned out to be a closer cousin to "Buffalo 66" or "Harold & Maude", films that seem "dark" but upon closer inspection are actually quite life-affirming love stories. The two very appealing lead performances hold your interest throughout, particularly from newcomer (to me at least) Selma Blair, who has a sort of Linda Fiorentino sexiness morphed with Sandra Bernhard's caustic attitude. The cinematographer makes good use of the Vancouver B.C. environs (although as someone who lives in the Northwest, I had to chuckle at one rugged evergreen Alpine setting that is supposed to represent the "high mountains of Mexico"). Worth a look.

  • Fairly average posted on 28 Aug 2006

Selma Blair is one actor I normally make an effort to avoid, but she is surprisingly good in this B-level piece. Indeed, I think she was done a great injustice by the slick photo that comes with the Australian DVD of The Sweetest Thing. Her performance in Cruel Intentions was not exactly a highlight on her resumé, either. So when I see her in a vaguely appealing form here, the surprise factor is enough to make me award it a bonus point. Quite possibly, this is all that the film has going for it, as I am struggling to think of another selling point. The plot, such as it is, concerns a loan officer who works in a big city bank. She's suicidal after discovering her lover is less than perfect and her goldfish is dead. So she goes up to the roof. Coincidentally, the bank is robbed, and she gets taken hostage by one of the perps when things don't quite go to plan. Aiding him in his escape, we follow her as she learns more about this rather charming robber with a passable British accent. The fundamental problem here is that not enough happens in the midst of all this character development to distinguish the story. Perhaps the problem lies with the DVD I viewed the film on. The dialogue is very indistinct in the 2.0-channel mix that is offered on the Australian DVD. Sometimes the difference between a boring, uninvolving scene and one that has the audience grinding its collective teeth in anticipation is merely a sound mix. So if you're thinking of buying DVDs from the Australian market, be advised that at least indie distributors in America take some pride in their workmanship.Tom Heaton gets a great cameo as the wounded man in the robbery, delivering one of the few stand-out laughs the film has to offer. The ending is syrupy enough to make anyone in the audience, even those with hyper-productive islet cells, sick to their stomach. Apparently, this feature was based upon a short film. The eighty-six minutes that this feature-length offering take up feel like at least sixteen too much, but I may be biased because of my desire for something noteworthy to happen during a story. The number at the end of the film is equally sugary and over-glazed.Still, I have seen plenty of worse offerings, so I gave Kill Me Later a five out of ten. Speaking of bad audio, the theatrical trailer on the Australian version of the DVD is encoded several decibels louder than the feature presentation. And they wonder why we parallel import?

...if Selma Blair continues to get lead parts. Okay I could barely stand her in " Cruel Intentions ". Since then she's only done B movies that you haven't heard of ( such as this ). The plot was pretty good and the lead man ( I forgot his name ) was hot and good in his part. Selma Blair is what makes this film simply stupid. She talks as if a spoon is forcing her mouth shut. It is terribly disheartening to watch a movie with a lead who won't even open her mouth to talk. She is the most annoying actress since Patricia Arquette ( and that's pretty bad ). If I don't see Selma Blair in anything but a toothpaste commercial during the next year I won't be surprised.

  • Feel good movie '90s style posted on 17 Jul 2006

Despite being made in 2001, this movie is basically about life in times in the '90s when Gen X culture took over the world. Everyone in this movie is so materialistic and selfish. Our heroin Shawn (Selma Blair) find's herself disappointed by life in every way and decides to jump from the roof top of the bank building she works in. As she finishes her last cigarette, a bank robber Charlie (Max Beesley) comes up to her and tells her that if she doesn't cooperate, he's gonna kill her :-) not knowing that that's EXACTLY what she was trying to do. There's sort of a deal struck between the two that if Shawn helps Charlie get away by becoming his hostage, he'll help her out by killing her later (hence the title of this movie). The funny part of this movie is that a supposed rogue Charlie is actually a nice guy compared to the status quo people around Shawn who're all morally bankrupt. Shawn and Charlie decides to take the leap together (no pun intended) and try out for a new life while other people gets their just comeuppances. Selma Blair is at her best in her role as Shawn, and brings the goods to the table in one of the best movie of her career. A feel good movie '90s style.
