Long ago in the Iron Age a shadow loomed over a lonely village. For generations the village youths are stolen from their families and delivered as sacrifice to a mythical beast - the Minotaur, that dwells beneath a great palace. Theo, haunted by the loss of his love in an earlier sacrifice is convinced that the beast isn't real and that his girl still lives as a slave within the palace. His father Cyrnan, the village leader, tries to reason with Theo not to go but Theo is driven by blind rage. He devises a plan and is taken with the other youths who are dragged screaming from their families.

This must be undoubtedly one of the worst movies I ever saw! I am not sure why this is catagorized under Horror, since if one of the many things that was lacking in this movie it was the horror element...Acting is bad, there are no tense moments, no gore, no nothing that would possibly justify this movie to be considered a Horror! If you like the ancient mythical stuff, go for 300! If Minotaur is a standard upon which Horror is defined, then you would much more appreciate that one.....

  • I have come to expect better from Sci Fi posted on 14 Aug 2009

Other than not being remotely related to the actual mythology, having absolutely awful dialog and worse readings and being a collaborative effort of six countries, it wasn't too bad.Characters die after being gored (and lots of gore, at that). The plot dies after being bored. No, wait.Actually, my wife and I both like Sci Fi, are fans of Stargate (in both incarnations) and Battlestar. We like those. We hated this. Complete waste of TiVo space.Think early Godzilla meets late Cujo for the beast effects. Think lots of syrup for blood and gore. Think Grand Canyon for plot holes. This would make a great movie for Mystery Science Theater.

I'm a real fun of mythology from wherever part of the world, Grece, Italy, Norway, etc, whatever kind of movie of this genre I see and I play PC-games too, such as Age of mythology or Titans. When "Minotaur" started, the woman's words at the beginning made me feel eager for a interesting movie, but minute by minute, that excitement was going down. I waited for something better, the effects didn't like me too much, especially when the beast was running, the plot was weak. I think that this kind of movie should have a good argument, may be from the real myth, and good special effects for being a nice film where you, furthermore you enjoy the movie, learn about Mythology. Really a so so movie.

Sometimes you come across movies that are so bad and so full of overacting and mistakes, they actually become hilarity. This is one of them: I can live with the 'based on' bit but I never knew it was the Irish who were fed to a bull-like monster (that failed to scare even my 5-year old son) by some drug crazed Nubians. I had Greek mythologies back at school and although I do'not remember much of it, THIS was'not part of the Minotaur story. None the less, never laughed so hard since Bridget Jones. Any good comment you think? Sure: I liked the decors, the costumes and basically the entire movie. It just parts ways with the original story and goes more the aliens/Predator/Tremors/etc tour. Thanks any-way

  • Direct-to-video/DVD posted on 06 Apr 2009

If this were the 80's this movie would've been released directly to video. Now it should be DVD. If you have too much time and you're into b-movies, than you might like this. Although if you really have too much time, why not watching a good movie instead? We all have different tastes, so some people might actually like this. But the majority won't and the(ir) reasons will be the following ones: bad acting, bad script and not really the highest production values. Of course the latter is understandable, it's a low budget movie. There is nothing really good about this movie and even a Tony Todd can't save it. But since I have seen worse pictures (at least you can see they're trying here and my b-movie fable might also play a role), I gave it 3 stars!

  • VERY good movie posted on 04 Jan 2009

For me, this was a GREAT flick! The story was good, the acting nice, and the creature itself was very nicely done. They had used animatronics in some scenes, not all CGI, which is right up my alley. And they had done a very good job! The characters in the movie had a lot of personality, and the relationship between them is also very atmospheric. I liked the fact, that it stayed away from teenage syndrome flicks, and actually had manage to put some good accents and dialogues between the plot. Not just mindless young people, that runs around with their head under their arms.I had hoped that the Minotaur would have looked more human though, not just a big bull, but none the less, a very good job. I would definitely recommend this movie, if you like creature features where animatronics is used to a good standard with a story that actually makes sense, instead of just putting people in with the beats and killing them off one by one. My advice... go see it!

  • Classic SciFi Adventure for all you movie lovers.... posted on 29 Dec 2008

This movie is truly a scifi classic. If you love creature movies then this is the one for you. Your taste for other scifi movies can never be satisfied after viewing such a movie as this.It is a classic for the following reasons: 1. Pure adventure--it has it all...caves, torture, monster, a labyrinth, mythological birth 2. Great plot--what else is better than a movie that captures the very essence of myth and legend? 3. Fantastic characters--Theo is a five star kind of man: heroic, brave, strong, basically a ladies man. Plus, it has an Irish lady, deaf girl, naive brother, twisted leader and a crazed rat man. 4. There's nothing much else I can say to convince you to view this stellar production. So, the best conclusion I can come to is for YOU to watch it ASAP!!!

  • Minotaur - never ever again posted on 26 Sep 2008

Minotaur - the word itself explains most of the entire movie. As it happened, my girlfriend bought the DVD-release at a local rental-store (used DVD), and thought it would be a good one. Sure, it has a good looking cover-art, and a nice fancy title/logo, but the rest just lacks content. The introduction and start of the movie makes it feel like at least a partly good one, though during its continuation, it clearly shines through as what it really is: A piece of utter wasted time and money.Do not buy or watch this movie, it's so bad you sit there thinking if you should have done the dishes or mopped the floor instead - as that would really give more excitement than this flop.To sum it up: if one could give a movie a dice-throw instead of the 1-10 rating, I would not even have thrown the dice.Oh, good thing about the DVD-buy on our side: We got a spare DVD-cover for something else - a bit expensive perhaps...

  • Perverse, incorrect, stupid posted on 18 Sep 2008

Perverse, the movie was perverse with the strange "exotic" nasty clothes they wore, the lesbian kiss? WTF!? In ancient Greece?Incorrect: Wikipedia quote: "at nine-year intervals, seven Athenian boys and seven Athenian girls were to be sent to Crete to be devoured by the Minotaur" The movie states 8 "youngsters" every third year. How come the village has been raided 5 times already, and the movie states: northern territory, foolish plot! Marriage between sister and brother is a ancient Egyptian tradition. Sub Saharan African actors as Minoans? WTF? How stupid can you be? Whats next? Far East Asian Vikings? North American natives as Samurais? Eskimos acting Zulu warriors? Caucasians in Apocalypto 2? Hey Mel lets make all the natives blond and blue eyed, thats the REAL story! The Minotaur is supposed to be a man with a head tail of a bull (sometimes with the hooves/hid legs of one as well). And what is that creature supposed to be a minotaur? A gigantic rat with horns and hooves? Just looks stupid.Stupid: All the running around the maze screaming each others names and the monster actually being able to sneak up to them with all its noisy breathing and running. Sniffing "gas" out of a goat skull, some kind of joke? What kind of helmets do they have? Haha, looks like something they robbed from Sauron in LOTR.Horrible, stupid movie, I believe it's one of the worst I've ever seen. I give it 2/10 because it had quite nice looking actresses. It's not hard to make a good movie out of a myth, how can you rape it so bad? This is not good, nor to learn history nor myth, as someone wrote.

  • Cheesy And Bad, But Entertaining And Somewhat Enjoyable posted on 31 Aug 2008

Let me get off my chest first thing that you can tell when you first see this movie that it's no Oscar nominee film. The acting was quite terrible and the story line was stupid and flawed. In the construction department I thought this film did terribly, but in the entertaining because of how cheesy it is, they were pretty successful in that region. I did watch this movie all the way through just to see how it would turned out because it entertained, and since I was watching it all the way through, that must mean I thought it was enjoyable. Now don't get me wrong, I'm not necessarily calling it a good movie, but as far as a OH MY GOD, STAY AWAY YOU MIGHT BURN YOUR EYES IF YOU WATCH IT, this film is not. I recommend it if you're into these stupid yet enjoyable B-Movies, but if you can't tolerate them, of course you need to stay away.

  • a bore, apart from the beast posted on 03 Aug 2008

** many spoilers** Oh boy, was I disappointed in this one!! I had my hopes up when I saw the DVD on sale at last, having read already much about it. But it did not live up to all my expectations at all! First of all: why change the original myth about Theseus and Ariadne??! Generally I don't mind if novels or true stories are changed somewhat in a movie, but in this case the original at least had some plot in it, and in this poor adaptation simply nothing happens!! It's basically about a bunch of kids that are thrown into a labyrinth and are chased by this Minotaur creature, who kills the majority of them in apparently the only way it knows of: by stabbing them with it's giant horns. Okay, that's exciting to watch for one time, but by the tenth time it gets very boring! The kids are no treat to watch too, looking scruffy and filthy, and the supposed hero Theo looks like a scarecrow on a bad-hair day. That doesn't help very much to sympathize with them while they're running around scared. The side-story of the priest-king and his priestess-sister doesn't add anything to the plot, it's just boring too, and I guess the quasi-Shakespearian ramblings-on of the priest are the result of the gasses he inhales because they're blurred and silly. And then there are numerous inconsistencies and illogical goings-on that kept amazing me. For example: all the kids are lowered on a rope in the pit from exactly the same spot, but down under everyone is apparently dispersed and it takes about 10 minutes to find each other back, by yelling and screaming, which is a very silly thing to do by the way in a creatures cave! The Minotaur was summoned up beforehand by the priest, so it could have expected its dinner coming down, but strangely enough it's no-where to be found when they all come down. Why wasn't it sitting under the pit with it's jaws wide open?!? Then the priestess lets herself fall backwards in the pit, which had just been closed with much ado and noise. How did she do it: slip through the holes in the iron framework?? And then there's suddenly a back-door in the labyrinth, and it appears to be exactly at the spot where the creature has it's sleeping-den, just a wooden door with one wooden bolt! Isn't that a bit strange?? All the creature had to do was just ramming that door or stick it's fierceful horns through it and it would have been free and could have eaten the inhabitants of the whole village! Anyway, these things at least sort of made it amusing to watch. And to give to movie some credit: the Minotaur looked pretty decent, a sort of Alien-like head with a Rotweilers way of gallopping through the labyrinth-hallways. But as I said: there's too little plot, too much of the same things happening over and over again and you don't care a bit who lives or dies, so to me it was a big deception. I rank it 4 (because of the looks of the creature) out of 10.

  • Solid b-entertainment filled with action. posted on 20 Jun 2008

Although it premiered on theaters here in México, I waited for it to land on Blockbuster. I expected a solid B-flick and I ended up having more than desired."Minotaur" isn't by any means a memorable action movie with mythological elements but it's an interesting flick with a solid plot and decent f/x.I didn't care much for the atmosphere or technical aspects of the movie because the plot was really interesting and fast paced. Please give this movie a try if you enjoy mythological related movies with monsters, princesses, and solid action sequences.Recommended for b-movie lovers.

  • wow.. eh is that a minotaur?? i thought they walked on two legs? posted on 09 May 2008

wow.. this movie was sooooooo interesting.. zzzzz.. (falls on the floor sleeping) with the well known actors... ehh.. tom hardy who has played a minor role in black hawk down! Michelle Van Der Water who has like played in three movies! ooOOo.. the rest of the cast has either played 1-3 movies.the story was very weak.. yey 8 people running around in a maze who is hunted by a "Minotaur". even i could have written better.. the actors must have been the dumbest ever!! " ooOoo maybe if i scream every time, even if the monster are not after me, someone will rescue me.. opps i drew the monsters attention.. i wonder why.. let me scream a little more, maybe ill scare it away!".. damn jerks..many goofs! omg.. such as (spoiler) when one is trying to climb up from the maze, you can clearly see he is hanging by a large string..everyone is going to disagree that i GAVE IT A two! but all the others only say the same (not kidding) "Surprisingly better than most Sci-Fi originals" something around that.. anyway i only gave this movie a two, because the minotaur wasn't so bad made and it was sooo cute...

  • Not even worth watching free on TV posted on 29 Apr 2008

Basically, "Minotaur" is a sub-standard "Stargate" episode. Except that there's no cool Stargate, no SG-1 team with their witty dialogue, and really not much else except glue sniffing villains. Watching this, I got the feeling that it was pretty derivative of "Stargate," especially in the look-and-feel area (and set and prop design is the one area that didn't disappoint).I will admit that I only watched about 1.25 hours of this, at which point I lost all interest and hope and turned it off. When that happens, the movie gets an automatic 1/10 rating for failing to even keep my attention. That's what happens when I don't care about any of the characters, or the boring SFX, or even the paint huffing.Hmmm.....paint huffing. That may explain this whole debacle. Honestly, this movie fails on almost every level that there is in the movie making process. While the basic premise is not entirely bad, just about everything from script to screen is junk. Just junk.I want to especially single out the script because it is SO BAD I can't believe anyone seriously considered it for production. Total paint-by-numbers writing, and here those numbers don't exceed three. The monologues of the villain are clichéd, over-the-top crap with a lot of formulaic rambling about blood and souls and unspeakable horrors and bearing the demon seed. And the other dialogue....It makes me cry when I see movies like this, because I take it as further proof against the existence of a kind and loving God.

  • "movie for TV" doesn't mean "bad" posted on 15 Feb 2008

What do you usually expect from movie where Coward is looking for his kidnapped girl. Sure, he'll turn into hero who will save the girl and be honored by his co-villagers. Right? NOOOOO. Not in this case. the plot is real pleasure for the movie watchers who are ready to think a little bit and don't count the budget of the movie instead of following the journey of the main character. because he's the real one who deserves the greatest attention of the watcher. I was clicking' the channels at the night, and actually wanted to go to bed, but this movie in few moments attracted my eye. Thanks to God director didn't try to restore the historical truth and didn't do the "Discovery movie" about "what they worn, what they ate" etc. This movie stays on the thin line line of simplicity and effect. For me the greatest zest was the changing of main character (Tom Hardy, marked him for my list of the best actors), who for love, for his aim turns into brave, then into mad and inhuman and reaches the despair. At the end the main character is not the well known hero. He's the broken and lonely man, who'll search in future only for silence and peace. MY Mark for "Minotaur" is 10. Thumbs up.

  • "You suck on her word like your mother's tit." Pretty good creature feature, better than expected. posted on 13 Feb 2008

Minotaur is set many 1000's of years ago in an age when the world was ruled by a dark empire from an island palace called Minos, these people worshipped the most powerful of all Gods the Bull. In a horrible act of worship the Queen (Shiva Gholamianzedah) offers herself to the God & is impregnated with a hideous Bull like creature called the Minotaur which she gives birth too, every 3 years 8 youths from the village of Thena are taken to Minos to be sacrificed to the Minotaur & that time has come once again. The ruler of Thena Cyran (Rutger Hauer) has a son named Theo (Tom Hardy) whose girlfriend Ffion (Donata Janietz) was taken 3 years ago, Theo hears that she may still be alive so in an effort to find out he makes sure he is one of the 8 sacrifices who have to face the horrors of the Minotaur & it's labyrinth...This English, German, Luxembourg, French & Spanish co-production was co-produced & directed by Jonathan English & while it isn't going to win any awards Minotaur turned out to be a lot better than I had originally anticipated. The script by Nick Green & Stephen McDool takes itself very seriously & even though it's based on the Greek legend of Theseus & the Minotaur it actually bears little resemblance to it in truth, the film moves along at a nice enough pace, it never bores to the extent where you feel like switching off, the character's are pretty good even if most of them don't do much, the dialogue is alright & the Minotaur itself is a pretty impressive beast. There's some nudity, there's some gore, there's lots of special effects & the story isn't too bad either. Don't get me wrong, Minotaur isn't any sort of masterpiece, far from it in fact but it's a decent watchable & quite fun sci-fi horror film that overall impressed me more than I thought it would. However I did feel a bit sorry for the Queen, I mean she lets herself get impregnated with a deformed bull creature & what thanks does she get? None, they cut it out of her with a knife & let it feed on her blood, now that's gratitude for you.Director English does OK, the MTV style quick cuts & shaky camcorder syndrome are thankfully absent here & you can actually see what's going on at all times which is nice. The film has a decent enough atmosphere to it as it's shot in nice golden candle lit hues & tones while the period setting is well realised. The special effects are surprisingly impressive here, the CGI computer effects are excellent in fact & the Minotaur looks the absolute business even though those looking for a faithful representation of the half man/half Bull Greek myth may be disappointed. The puppet effects are also very good, the two techniques are used well together & compliment each other. There's some gore here but not much, most of the gore consists of the Minotaur impaling people on it's horns although there's a fair amount of blood splatter as well.I was somewhat surprised to see this had a healthy sounding budget of about $7,000,000, I must admit that sounds like a lot of money for what ends up on screen impressive special effects apart. It's certainly well made with good production values but seven big ones? Not that you would know but Minotaur was actually shot in Luxembourg. The acting is OK, genre favourite Tony Todd has put on some weight since his Candyman (1992) days, Rutger Hauer is here for rent money & Ingrid Pitt is unrecognisable under lots of warts & wrinkles playing an ugly old woman while babe Michelle Van Der Water provides the good looks.Minotaur is a decent creature feature with some nice gore & impressive special effects, it won't change your life but it's an entertaining way to pass 90 odd minutes. Certainly better than I expected & better than most creature features such as Python (2000), Crocodile (2000) or Cerberus (2005) to name but three...

  • Don't be fooled, it's JAPMTVM... posted on 02 Oct 2007

Just Another Poorly Made TV Movie.A combination of poor script, minimal SFX, and wild over-acting by Todd and company make this a pretty sad take on the well-known myth. Corn syrup blood spews and there's a lot of noise. That's about it.I did derive a bit of pleasure from trying to sort out all the different influences on Todd's portrayal of the "psycho" potentate. It's Frank Booth ("Blue Velvet") meets Thulsa Doom ("Conan the Barbarian"), with a bit of Jabba the Hutt thrown in for good measure. Until you've seen someone taking a "hit" off a cattle skull, you haven't seen good cinema. There's some vague hope that things will pick up, until the victims are tossed into the labyrinth. From that point forward, it's a complete waste of time...typical monster-in-a-cave fare. You could probably make a drinking game out of it, though...everyone slams a shot whenever a foam rubber rock moves.Save your time and rent "Jason and the Golden Fleece" or some other film that is at least a little entertaining.

  • Anybody know the origin of the making of this movie? posted on 16 Sep 2007

I saw this movie and was disappointed greatly, but more importantly I'm here to see if anyone knows the origins of this movie.I wrote a similar script (though much better) and entered it into a screen writing contest...I never heard back from them. Not long after that did I see production began on this movie and there are striking similarities to my script and this movie...though this movie is much lower quality and has less production value. But there are things in this movie that I had created for my script and did not come from the story of the Minotaur which made me suspicious. Of course it is possible that I am not the only person in the world that wrote a script containing these similarities...but any information anyone could give me to ease my suspicions would be appreciated.

  • Tries to be stylish, forgets to be a film posted on 06 Sep 2007

This is a film that is loosely derived from the Greek myth of Theseus. Here the hero Theo also goes to join a contingent of youths taken to be sacrificed to the minotaur. He is also helped by a woman - the consort of the evil Bad Guy. Bad Guy incidentally is a cross between Morpheus from The Matrix (and thinking about that, Theo is a bit like Neo) and the evil person in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. Lastly it is set in some bygone classical age as well. However it has a dark moody backdrop throughout, strange jarring cinematography, and alternating pseudo-philosophical dialogue and clichés. The characters are all trite and very annoying. It is amazing how dull the film is for the first 3/4. Even the labyrinth is not creepy, just a boring excursion looking for lost girlfriends, random vagabond dwellers, and exits. It does get slightly better once most people die though.

  • How desperate can you get posted on 01 Apr 2007

This movie had no redeeming factors except it well killed a boring afternoon. The Minotaur looked silly more like a sick milk cow with a over bite. The acting was flat no feeling even when Todd's character tried to seduce his sister, sick and really had nothing to do with the movie. The"HERO" Theo acted more lick a spoiled brat and by the end you were hoping he would be eaten. The "MUTE" girl was the only one I was glad survived to the end. Plus the adaption of the myth behind this movie was badly done. Lots of blood splatters I will give that but if you have $5 to rent a movie by-pass this one unless you are really bored.
