Much more interesting and entertaining than I thought it would be. posted on 26 Aug 2009
This was a free rental from my local public library so all I risked was my time. With its rather low IMDb rating I wasn't expecting much. After watching all of it I concluded that it is better than many of the poor reviews say it is.Meg Ryan is Marty Durand, a middle aged mom of one who has sort of let herself go. Her husband must have not been a very good person because we find out that he died in prison. Marty is frumpy and badly overweight.Marty does have a fine son, Colin Hanks as Henry Durand, who also happens to be an up-and-coming FBI agent. He is going away for an assignment that takes him away from their Shreveport home for 3 years, during which he must had had little or no contact with his mother. As she is seeing him off at the airport, and sitting on the floor drinking a soda, a passing person pitches a quarter into her soda cup. This is her wake-up call that she looks like a vagrant and she heads towards a better lifestyle. The movie picks up 3 years later, when Henry comes home and finds this strange woman in his back yard, lounging beside a pool they didn't have before. He is shocked to find this slender, beautiful woman is his mother. She explains later that she had some really look luck in the stock market, and she also got herself into shape. But she was enjoying it too much for Henry, as he realized when a guy even younger than himself came to pick up his mom at 10:30PM and ride away on a motorcycle. At the state fair, Marty is hit in the head by a flying model helicopter, owned by Tommy (Antonio Banderas), and when she comes to is surprised to see this attractive man. He seems to fall for her also, and about the same time Henry finds out the FBI is tracking Tommy, suspected of being an international art thief. (An opening scene at the Louvre in Paris hints of that.) So, much of the movie and its humor has Henry leading an FBI task force to listen in on and follow his mom, Marty, and Tommy to thwart the theft of a valuable sculpture being exhibited in Shreveport.Selma Blair is Emily who is Henry's fiancé' and also happens to be an FBI agent.SPOILERS: In the end when Tommy and his two partners are setting up to steal the sculpture, Henry correctly figures out what they are doing. He gets the drop on Tommy at night outside the museum, but Tommy tells him that Marty is in danger, that he, Tommy, is really a CIA agent, which they verify, and the story ends at Henry and Marty's house, with various people coming crashing in through doors or windows until the crooks are surrounded.

My Mom's New Boyfriend is one of that movies which is very difficult to write about because their elements are not bad but they are not particularly good either so,there is not too much to talk about. My Mom's New Boyfriend is an average comedy and I had a good time watching it...but the experience is completely forgettable. The actors are good on their roles.Meg Ryan,Antonio Banderas,Colin Hanks and Selma Blair bring decent performances, although they do not have too much to do.As I said at the beginning of this commentary, there is not much to talk about this movie. My Mom's New Boyfriend is a mediocre but entertaining comedy.I would recommend to watch it on DVD if there are not any other options.

My wife and I regularly watch romantic comedy's as end of week, child in bed, brain wind down, light fluffy fare. That said, I do like some quality of acting or comedy, e.g. 4 Weddings, Music & Lyrics, Bridget Jones, Notting Hill, Love Actually (oh god... is High Grant the only person capable of a decent Rom-Com???), Sleepless in Seattle, You've got Mail, etc. This movie was just bland, unfunny, and so poor that we turned it off half-way through. Not a chuckle, not even a smirk. As many other reviews here have pointed out, the characters seem forced and just don't work together. It's not even that they are annoying... it just didn't 'work' for mine which is very disappointing as the individual actors have proved track records of quality films.Avoid, or if you must watch it, be ruthless and promise to turn it off after 15-20 minutes if it doesn't really grab you.

It has to stop. Critics don't even go to the screenings of romantic comedies anymore. Doesn't anyone want to have a good time? Yes, most of the time a disaster is meant to happen because the industry has ran out of ideas and thus people have lost the faith in romantic comedies; but this isn't an excuse for writing reviews that sometimes indicate that critics may not have seen the film or that talk more about Meg Ryan's surgery than her performance. "My mom's new boyfriend" stars Ryan as Marty, the mother of Henry (Colin Hanks), an FBI agent, and a woman who was once extremely fat but now when Henry comes back from a very long work trip, is completely unrecognizable. I don't know what surgeries everyone mention, but the woman Henry sees by the pool is very hot and I guess that's why a mysterious art thief (Antonio Banderas) falls for her.I don't know why anyone would enter this film badly predisposed. Firstly, It has Meg Ryan, eternal queen of romantic comedies. Is she in a bad acting phase? Nonsense: watch "In the land of women" and "In the cut" and tell me if I'm wrong. Secondly, it has Antonio Banderas, whom I don't like but I prefer him laughing of himself and smiling rather than pretending to be serious. Here, the actor and actress have chemistry and if they were laughing of themselves it certainly made a positive effect. What else? Colin Hanks, who showed his comedic chops in the excellent "Get over it" and in the very good "Orange County". And Selma Blair plays a delightful supporting role. Who dislikes Selma Blair? Am I selling this movie to you, by defending its participants? You bet I am. Take in consideration it's not a great movie (which romantic comedy is these days; I can accept that) and I knew nothing about its director George Gallo, who also wrote it. Gallo seems to be a kind man. The chemistry between this 'unexpected cast' (take a good look again and you'll realize you would have never expected to see those four together) proves this; and his script, unoriginal and uncompromised, reaffirms it. The key word here is 'uncompromised', because "My mom's new boyfriend" doesn't break into new ground of the classic formulas or contains many laughable jokes (there were two or three times I truly laughed, though), but that's not where you should look.Maybe it's too convenient, but it's as if Gallo knew that romantic comedies are taken less seriously these days, so he provides a direction that is not safe (that would be a disaster), which is what someone would do to secure a hit, but it's definitely pleasing. The thing is that Gallo makes it pleasing in the best form he could, with a fast-paced rhythm and a fun edition that accentuates it; a lineal storyline and a preoccupation for characters. Don't be surprised if you identify with some of these beings. I'm sure you've seen them before but as complete stereotypes. "My mom's new boyfriend" is short, but in its duration finds time to construct its characters and establish their personalities by giving each one of them interesting things to say. Because I love romantic comedies I try to notice details, and I understand if by now you see me as someone not to trust when it comes to this genre. I've already learned to let myself go and forgive minimal trespasses in occasions; but I'm writing objectively, and I'm writing the truth."My mom's new boyfriend" is a good romantic comedy. Now tell me about the 'twist' You couldn't have seen that one coming.

This film is about a beautiful mother, whose son is in the FBI, falling in love with an international art thief.Initially I found the sound effects that accompany scene changes annoying. After I decided to live with those effects, I found "My Mom's New Boyfriend" quite enjoyable. It is comedic to see Henry in such a difficult role with obvious conflict of interest. Colin Hanks is likable, and he handles his conflicted role well. It's not easy to act professional, embarrassed at the same time! The dramatic twist about Tommy in the end is quite unexpected. It feels a little contrived, but it provides the Hollywood ending that makes people feel good. I think it also serves as a satire towards the lack of communication between governmental agencies. It's quite hard to believe Meg Ryan as a mother with such a grown up son though. Meg Ryan looks so young and beautiful, and she is so unconvincing as a mother. It's the only drawback of "My Mom's New Boyfriend", otherwise it gave me a good laugh.

Pretty awful! Only flat jokes, the movie does not make any sense at all. And Meg Ryan was supposed to be the hottest girl ever? What was that all about? That bot-ox face and that flat chest will even fool anyone? Stupid movie, stupid scenes, as someone once said, stupid scenes transitions (like Windows Movie Maker)...I could not laugh at all. I only waste my time and money watching this.... this... well... i think u got the idea. Please go spend your money elsewhere.Poor execution...Two thumbs down!

This movie is absolutely worth watching. All people in it seemed to really have a good time. And so did we, enjoying their efforts. There was enough chemistry between Banderas and Ryan to give their dialogs that little extra. The characters in this comedy get a fine treatment by all actors. No need for in depth analysis of hidden layers in the story. Well, we can see intentions that are supposed to be found in a comedy. And lots of irony, the way standard situations get an absurd twist. This movie will not disappoint Banderas or Ryan fans. Their talent for comedy is being used well.

This movie kept me interested and entertained but, there seemed to be something lacking for me. Meg Ryan, looked like a cross between Joan Rivers and Jack Nicholson, as the Joker, and it was hard to relate to her wacky character who seemed to be on speed, crank, or something. There where some funny parts and Colin Hanks played his part well I thought, though casting Meg Ryan as his mother felt unnatural to me.Antonio Banderas played the same character he plays in all movies he stars in, with emphasis on his looks and accent and no consideration for his acting, which was only his average, not exceptional. One of the high points of the movie for me was seeing Selma Blair, who I have admittedly have a small crush on since I first saw her in Legally Blond. Though I thought that she did not have a large enough part in this movie to really judge her acting. The movie has a surprise ending, that actually caught me off guard, and that is a good thing in my opinion. All in all, this movie was worth watching and I felt that the money I spent was not wasted, but, don't watch this expecting to use your brain at all or you might be disappointed.

What an awful movie with a pathetic story line! This has to be one of the worst writing and directing jobs out there. The writer is obviously ignorant, uninformed or just plain stupid. The whole restaurant scene was the most bizarre thing I have ever seen. The portrayal of the Albanian restaurant with middle eastern music and belly dancers was ridiculous and inaccurate!!! Albania is one of the oldest countries located in Eastern EUROPE and has no such music nor does it have belly dancers!! To put it nicely the writer and director should be embarrassed of this piece of crap. Don't waste your time on this! I gave this disaster a 1 because 0 was not a option...

i don,t understand at all what has to do Albanian restaurant with Arabic music,,i saw the scene when they were in sk Albanian restaurant and the only thing Albanian there was the flag,,nothing else,,albaniens does nor have bellydancers in their places,,but i guess ,,someone when wanna make fool of albaniens did payed a lot of money to mix Albanian people with middle easy people,,probably it was Russians or Serbs who payed those money to George gallo for mixing albaniens with Arabic people,,nothing wrong ,,people are all same everywhere,,good or bad,,but AL least when you try to make something Albanian,,make that in right way,,not only lies there,,as an Albanian,,i feel humiliated by that horrible music,,pretending to be Albanian music,,but it was not Albanian AT all

What a crappy movie. Can't understand how Meg Ryan accepted to participate on it.Haven't seen Meg Ryan and Antonio Banderas in good movies for the past...4 years I think.Fell asleep 15 minutes after it started. I thought it was going to be funny, a good comedy but it turned out to be excessively dumb. No plot, no script, no sense.By the way Meg Ryan's makeover went really bad. That angel face is gone, her face is so inexpressive now. The botox doesn't allow her to move her lips anymore. How sad.Avoid this movie at all cost, it's an awful waste of money and time.

I'm usually pretty forgiving when it comes to romantic comedies, especially those out of Hollywood. They often are borderline insipid, clichéd, predictable, and dull-witted, but those that aren't completely inept still manage to entertain to varying degrees. Unfortunately, "My Mom's New Boyfriend" falls way below the grade and fails even at being mildly amusing.First, it isn't necessary for a movie like this to be smart or particularly realistic, but it should have some integrity so that we can actually believe in the characters. Here, in the prologue, we see Henry Durand (Colin Hanks), who clearly has a close relationship with his Mom, Marty (Meg Ryan), leaving home and Mom behind to start a job with the FBI. Flash forward three years, and Henry returns home -- apparently, without even once having visited or talked to his Mom in all that time. Now I'm sure the FBI requires a certain amount of secrecy, but it sure doesn't require its agents to cut off all communication with their nearest and dearest for three years. Right off the bat, the phoniness of the set-up sinks any chance at viewer empathy with any of the characters.Second, the characters themselves are about the most unlikeable I can think of in any romantic comedy I've ever seen. I'd rather spend a weekend locked in a cell with Barbara Stone (Bette Midler's character in "Ruthless People") than 15 minutes with the insufferably egotistical, vapid Marty Durand. Ryan is just awful here, and I usually enjoy her performances. She badly overplays Marty's zany qualities with ticks and vocal histrionics that are way over-the-top, and she seems to have lost whatever limited gifts she had for physical comedy. Maybe the knife slipped and the surgeons cut something else out when they were redesigning her face. She looks like she's trying to look like Michelle Pfeiffer and failing miserably. It has to be the worst performance of her career, and probably the worst of the year. Hanks, perhaps trying to counterweight Ryan's annoying performance, is as lifeless as a paperweight. He glowers and scowls through the film. Neither Antonio Banderas nor Selma Blair have enough to do to make much of an impression, though Banderas manages at least to be somewhat charming through the muddle of the storyline. Actually, the only genuinely funny performance in the film is from Trevor Morgan, in a small part as a young stud Ryan dates. The film piles bad jokes one on top of the other and beats to death what wasn't particularly funny the first time -- the Italian chef who pines for Marty, the FBI agents' jokes about how hot Marty supposedly is, etc. I guess it does this because it has nothing else to do. There's just nothing going on here, no romance, almost no comedy, certainly no suspense, and we lost logic in the first five minutes. The only thing that can recommend this movie is seeing the crack-up of a once gifted actress. There's a certain fascination in that, Ryan's performance is a slow-moving train wreck. I hope she gets it together and comes back in better form next time.

I was expecting more of this movie...A cast with Meg Ryan, and Antonio Banderas in it can do only good and it did but not quite as I expected. It's a nice comedy, not the funniest, not the worst. If it had unknown actors it would probably be rated pretty bad but the cast brings the movie up. If you want a masterpiece it's not for you, if you want a fun, sweet, nice to watch movie you should see it. Colin Hanks was OK, Meg Ryan was good and Banderas was average. I don't know why but Banderas seemed a little fake in some parts, he had extra-use for his charm and that's not quite good in a comedy. My personal rating would be 8/10 as though I criticize it a lot it's not bad it's just not as good as I'd like to get from this cast.

Banderas in the end is CIA and he was working undercover trying to prosecute the other thieves and it was all a misunderstanding and thats also how he got out of the jail in Paris. the movie lacked a sense of excitement and it seemed too predictable and the only unpredictable thing was the fact that Banderas was a secret agent the movie did not deliver as a funny movie but some times it was humorous but nothing too hilarious. So i would call it a average comedy. This is one of the weakest comedies it has ever been my immense discomfort to see - nothing shines - and the target audience is what? Women in their 40s? - I suggest anyone would be just plain insulted by the lack of anything construing the most basic brain food here - there ain't one smart line or original scene - it truly is neither comedy or romance. The only positive is that this is totally harmless and won't offend, but it won't entertain either, it really is lobotomy food...

Just horrible, horrible, horrible. We didn't laugh - not once.Just about every scene is set up to deliver a flat joke.Honestly, we LOVE comedies, but this was neither comedy, or romantic. The plot about the Mum (Meg Ryan) whose son is in the FBI (Colin Hanks - who here acts as though he has a large plank inserted right up him especially in his scenes with Selma Blair) - starts with Meg Ryan losing 200lbs of fugliness suddenly becomes beautiful wealthy vivacious and sexy, much to the son's embarrassment, is just tooo much. When a suspected wanted international art thief (Banderas) falls for her and the son is on the case the so-called fun begins. But it just ain't fun. At all. What ensues is a comedy of errors and misunderstandings that is just plain toe-curling embarrassing. The only positive is that this is totally harmless and won't offend, but it won't entertain either, it really is lobotomy food...This is seriously one of the turkeys of the year and deserves to not only go straight to DVD but straight into the DVD bin...Does no-one's careers (Especially Hanks) any favours ... avoid like the plague...especially if you're fans of any of the actors...this will be, I guarantee, one they want to forget in a hurry.

To the others that have commented on this movie - chillax people! Why take everything so personally/seriously? If a movie actually makes you angry - then stop watching it and move on! Actors have to make a living too - not everything they do is going to be a masterpiece. (And insulting their looks just makes YOU look petty and stupid.)That said, this movie was mildly entertaining, not offensive, and had a few chuckles. If, like me, you watch movies to be entertained (to step out of your own world for an hour or so), then this movie should do the trick. I wouldn't recommend spending a lot to see it - but then I'm of the opinion that very few movies are actually worth the current ticket prices.

I didn't like the movie at all. Gave it 2 votes inly because Antonio Banderas and Kolin Hanks were enjoyable. posted on 06 Jan 2009
I enjoyed watching Kolin Hanks in this movie. I found him quite convincing, what was not easy considering the lousy screenplay. Antonio Banderas was handsome as always. But those two could not help the rest of the movie. It was not funny, not romantic and very unnatural. The movie left me with impression that Meg acts with a thought in her mind "hey! I'm still here!". I believe she does not need this. She just needs to find a right project for her and she'd be great. The citations of "How to Steal a Million" (I believe this was the title of a wonderful movie with Odry Hepbern and Peter O'Toole), on my opinion, was too obvious and banal. I can't believe such good actors have agreed to participate in it.

Just awful....... It doesn't make any sense at all...... It is not a comedy, not a thriller, not a caper movie... It is just nothing.... Why on earth do they make such stupid, inane movies??? I haven't any good or say, better, movies the two leads act in.. It is high time that ms Ryan cuts her hair, brush it and give it a good wash... She looks awful! Senor Banderas! Time to pack up and go back to Spain.. perhaps Pedro Almadovar will help you to rescue what's left of your once promising career.... I am glad I haven't paid any cent for this sordid affair... I wonder whether it has made any cent at all???? It puzzles me to read the few favorable lines on this film... I can not find one good thing in it... Just awful.....
-
The premise is uplifting and then crazy, but its a comedy! She did NOT lose weight to get a guy, but it was a byproduct of spiritual enlightenment and a change to a healthy life. It has risk and love, and comedy. You hope for a happy ending for all characters involved. Antonio is hot, Meg has a hot body, she's still pretty. the itsy bitsy spider was hilarious! The young acting mom and the old acting son is too funny. I suggest it for any woman, I am 37 and cute too... I relate to Meg's character very much. It would be nice to meet an Antonio Banderas... Its pure fantasy, A FOR FUN movie!!! People shouldn't get so worked up and just enjoy life. I may buy the DVD! Watch it for yourself and see what you think!

A few chuckles, a little bit of plot, and some star power. I wish there'd been more Selma Blair on screen. I like her but ... her part could have been played by anybody. It's kind of scary when Meg Ryan smiles (her face is a disaster, but her lips are freaky) but other than that she looks good and can still pull off her Megness like no one else. There are a couple scenes that are pure Meg. When Antonio is fawning over how hot she looks, she responds "Yeah! I know!" Only Meg could do that and not make everybody sick. In another scene she gets mad at him and throws a fit, punching and screaming into the air. Antonio just watches until its over and is speechless (so was I) but for a genuinely soft-spoken "Wow." It was nice to see those scenes. Meg's still got it and Antonia doesn't seem like he's going to lose it any time soon.It was a pleasant surprise to see how good Antonio looks. Maybe I just haven't seen him in a while. I've always liked him in comedies. If you like Antonio, you'll love the scene where he ends up with each hand in a glass of water (or white wine?). Antonio could charm the socks off ... I dunno, somebody who really needed their socks. That's what these kinds of movies are all about, right? How good do our stars look? How much we enjoy seeing our favorite celebrities prance about ... acting. There's a light twist at the end so everybody can be happy. Upon reflection it explained a few unanswered hmmmm's from previous scenes but I didn't see it coming because I wasn't expecting it; I didn't need it and I had forgotten about those scenes because this isn't a movie you keep score on. That's cool.More reviews at sitenoise-atthemovies.blogspot.com
