Pretty Good Film posted on 28 August 2009
What could have been a cheesy film was actually pretty good.I gave this movie a 6 because it isn't something you have to see, but because the directing of this movie put it a little above what could've been a 3 or 4. The concept of this movie revolves around some privileged white students who use their medical talents to commit murder and disguise evidence. And all the while having sex with different partners, in odd locations, around dead bodies...so yeah, it's a little perverted and twisted. But this director deserves some credit for doing such a good job with b-movie material. All of the actors performed well. Some moments were a little over-the-top, what I call show-off acting. But still a decent movie. Watch this one as a late-nighter, could even throw in some Basic Instinct or The Last Seduction and make it a night of cinema perversion. But good films nonetheless.

This movie was so bad that I just had to register on IMDb to set things straight. For the most I trust the average rating here. Seems to be correct but this one was off.Now the movie was quite a disappointment. To me its a designer movie that did swap a real story for some macabre scenes. The plot is so thin, and if you start to think about the storyline for just a second, then it all falls apart. The whole idea of these "rogue" doctors that get high on playing with murder and corpses is a joke. It just doesn't make sense. They are all incredible childish, the dialog is like children trying to talk each other into stupid stuff just by using the apparently magic sentence " I dare you "....So just by saying "I dare you" the leading character showes his promising career down the drain with eyes wide open. Its so thin, boring and predictable that its a mystery to me how this movie got the rating it got here.

Up and coming pathologist superstar Ted Grey (Milo Ventimiglia) has it all - a beautiful fiancée (Alyssa Milano) and a promising pathological job at a prestigious hospital. But, being the new kid on the block isn't always the best, and he becomes the early target of lead pathology doctor Gallo (Michael Weston).Soon Gallo leads Ted into the seedy world of pathology, where he and fellow pathologists play a deadly game. They murder people and then try to decide how the murder was committed. As Ted delves deeper and deeper into this world, his good boy persona is tarnished, especially beginning an affair with the seductive pathologist Juliette (Lauren Lee Smith).Of course, things begin to spiral out of control and Ted soon finds himself in a fight for his - and his fiancée's - lives.A very typical horror film with the typical ending and typical characters. There's nothing really new, fresh or exciting about this film - unless you're a girl because you see Milo's butt. Otherwise, it's really not worth your time.

This movie has a brilliant story line. A concept of pathology students killing with discreet ways and challenging each other to discover the truth behind each killing, only to better themselves. However, as all recent horror movies are showing, there is no longer any horror in this genre. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying don't watch this movie, all i am saying is that don't expect to be a HORROR, the edge of your seat, hair grabbing horror that makes me personally love movies. I personally was disappointed with this movie, as when i read the story line i was excited. it was something fresh and new. Something that i haven't seen before, something that had all the potential in the world. unfortunately the movie wasn't able to deliver and satisfy my need for a good movie.Overall, i suggest you watch this movie, as the storyline is brilliant.

To be honest, I only went to see this film due to because of the lead actor. And usually, when thats the main pull of the film you hope that it has a little more to offer than 'eye candy'. But it leaves you wondering what exactly the film has to offer, and why you went to see it.The film is about a group of medical students who have the power to play God. They can kill anyone, any way they want and hide every shred of evidence. But this is where the problems start, because I found it hard to watch a film without any rest bite from murder and gruesome content. Not a film for the squeamish in anyway, with the effects being 'realistic', the blood and guts was on a very high level. So you want to see something in which you can find anything to vaguely enjoy. But with this film, you don't. I saw this with two other people, and they both pondered at the films message. Yes its modern social idea, but to show it in this way with a main character you feel no sympathy for what so ever despite everything that he does or happens to him can only leave a person disappointed. The script was heavy, clunking in places where smooth dialogue is much needed, and the acting to me seemed awkward and not believable. Its not a moving as it could be, lingers more on the disturbed and perverted side of life too much and offers a weak and predictable ending.A film to see if you're a medical student maybe, or a gore fan. But with little else going for it, one can help but feel cheated for spending time watching this film. This could have been so much more, if only the characters were better written and better played.

this movie is definitely not for faint-hearted. Very gore, very nasty, very gross. Plenty hacking, cutting, etc..Apart from that, this movie has serious flaws. the scriptwriter/director could do better. One typical scene : Jake hits Ted and Ted passes out. Ted wakes up with hands tied (not tied at back!), but totally mobile, has ability to kick and hit with his hands. But somehow Ted is totally helpless, as Jake is about to hurt/kill him. Then the worse part, Ben suddenly appears and covers Jake's nose and mouth with possibly chloroform, without any force, power or struggle. Jake just stood there standing, one hand holding a weapon, another doing nothing, just standing there and doing nothing. Looking like he willingly wanted to pass out sniffing that stuff.Terrible script, terrible directing, terrible characters, terrible story with near-zero realism.

I didn't hate it, but I thought Milo's acting was very wooden. A few times they could have used a tree trunk and it could not have been worse. And the way he just went from model citizen to cold blooded murderer was very implausible. Also when the students tried to act and sound tough, it was way too overdone. It was bravado that you see a 5 year old try to attempt. I was waiting a 'No you are'....'I know you are but what am I'! Gallo's tough act was very childish, and ended up turning into a bad rendition of Max Cady. The spineless teacher was just infuriating. Very B grade IMHO and only worth watching if you have nothing else!

This might be the most underrated, unappreciated horror film of the 21st Century. I thought it was very really superbly good. The script comes from the fantastic duo of Neveldine and Taylor who also brought us the adrenaline-on-screen flick Crank. If you saw Crank then you might probably know its full of energy and loaded with man-aggression. Take that energy and aggression and make it into a horror film and you'll get Pathology. The ever present gore didn't feel like it was over the top and the interaction between the characters might feel a bit weird at first but then the character development establishes them as weird and freaky so yeah they were supposed to say and do things like that. The performance of lead Milo Ventimiglia is passable. If I were to give him a grade I'd probably settle with B. His character here is pretty much the same with his character in the TV show Heroes. A dark, creepy and ominous character who at first might seem pretty shallow but deep down, horrid and morbid thoughts lies at the darkest pits of his loins. On the other hand though, the yang (or yin, whatever) to Milo's Ted Grey therein lies Dr. Jake Gallo, freakishly portrayed by Michael Weston who I'm pretty sure I've seen in a couple of Zach Braff romantic flicks. His performance is so superbly done it reminds me of some creepy guy that Christian Bale portrayed sometime ago. It was creepy, morbid, horrid, scary, spooky, fantastic, amazing, surprising and the list of all the awesome adjectives goes here. Its a pity it didn't get recognized by the movie-going audience. I salute Michael Weston for doing a complete 180 from cheeky Zach Braff love stories to this. A ghastly tale of murder, lust and corpses. Pathology is an A++, a 10/10, the ultimate thriller experience.10/10

Amazing Job Marc Schoelermann,Mark Neveldine and Brian TaylorI suggest to Everyone Watch this Movie. It' Make You to Think about the Things are Happening around You

I was very intrigued to see this film. I was impressed by how real it was on many levels. It started me thinking about human nature, ethical limits, and our ability to influence those around us. I disagree with those who say it was gross for effect as working in the medical field, one knows that this is a part of life that people would rather not be aware exists. I see it all the time, It is reality --just not in such a condensed form. There was an intelligence about the film that ALMOST blossomed. But I soon became frustrated when it couldn't decide if it was a love story or a psychological thriller. The actors they chose were very believable character actors, no CW actors here. I've been following most of their careers. Props to casting. There seemed to be a lot of research to make this film realistic as usually when I see a medical type show, I can tell when the actors are just swinging around tools and don't know the last thing about them. Not the case here. That being said, I don't understand why one would go through the trouble of casting a great group of actors and talk about "The Game" they are playing and then show "the game" in a goofy quick shot type form? I was up for the ride. The part with the Pimp and Michael Weston, reeled me in and I thought that the plot would continue with this type of precision with the other characters. But instead I was left guessing what was the glue that brought this group together? Alyssa Milano is beautiful and I think she was right for this part but there was this dreary tone to her scenes that should of been the bright spot of the film. I wanted her to light up Ted Grey's life! Wrong choice for the film makers in my opinion to not showcase her with a more positive slant. But some amazing scenes, amazing speeches by most of the actors especially Michael Weston who just jumped to my top male actor list to watch, just confusing. Yes, I'm confused.

Wow.I don't know what to say. I didn't really expect a lot when my girlfriend dragged me to the midnight show at the Arclight to see "Milo's new movie". I thought i was going to see some lame boring teen slasher. Boy, was i wrong.I didn't know what I was up for -- this is probably the darkest, meanest thriller that I've seen in a long time. It's AWESOME. It keeps you thinking.I don't want to spoil anything but this movie is a real roller-coaster ride into the dark corners of the human psyche. It's twisted and unexpected. Milo - although I'm not a big fan - gives an incredible performance. Also the guy who plays Jake Gallow. Who is he, never heard of him?? He's fantastic.A little gory and quite disgusting at times but it never feels over the top. And that's what makes it so great.

If anyone doubts, here's the undeniable truth: the doctors ARE sadistic bastards that deserve the same, or very similar treatment they give to their own patients! To be more specific, they really do deserve the treatment so vividly presented in the very end. All of them. That was a bad joke alright, but I just had to! Now seriously... After I watched this movie for the first time, I almost couldn't sleep for days. It was more than disturbing and ruinous for me. I have suffered at the hands of those "divine creatures" (i.e. doctors), so it is a bit personal, but that's just the way it always is, sorry (yes, I do know the difference between a doctor and a pathologist, doctors are even worse!). So I was thinking, what's next? Documentaries? (For educational purposes.) I was thinking, what is the "massage"? "Go, and die ASAP, cause someone's gonna have a lot of fun!?" That is, rather than being extremely tortured for 7 minutes while paralyzed and suffocating? I think I'd "get the point" after only about 30 seconds... or am I a bit pretentious?Bodies, yes... that's us. Fragile, smelly, disgusting from the inside. What's there to actually check again and again? You guys are weird, weird, weird. But oh well, you know it. Though, you forgot to show how they "bury" dead fetuses within the dead bodies... well, you might add that in a sequel. That's interesting.Anyway, after some time I decided to take another look at this movie. To see how I'd handle it. And what was utterly unthinkable for me, this time I liked it!!? (I am at the moment disregarding the fact that the movie is pretty far from realistic.) So I started thinking again (and I still do... I pretty much don't do anything too useful) what is this thing that drives me, or anyone else, to blindly "fall in love" with our worst nightmares? The cast. Malignant, pernicious, cold-blooded psychos? Not really. I'd say quite overacted. Apathetic, even desperate. Like it's just too much for them. No matter how difficult it must be to truly believe in that stuff you're supposed to carry out, that's no excuse for obviously unsatisfying acting. No offense. All the time I had the impression that they are simply dummies for something much more terrifying that they don't have within, or can not express for some other reason. Alyssa was really getting on my nerves (why is her face always so greasy?), that is until I saw her butchered on the table.Teddy... the one that conducted autopsy over his beloved one. His tanathos was displayed here in the most genuine way. He simply couldn't afford to lose that grasp and taste. I had the feeling he loved her then more than ever. He might as well have f****d her at that point (dismembered or prior to dismembering there goes my beloved Jeff's influence again), in the very end, for she asked for it in the very beginning. "My dearest, I always loved you, like I've told you million times (throughout the movie) but only now's the time I can fully show it to you!"... Well, it would surely be a greater turn on than the actual sex scenes which are even worse than those in the Basic Instinct. The code "sex & death" most often misses the mark. But somehow, I think I understand this character. Where are his parents? Could they be dead? "Window to God"... Just something he could stare at forever, in hope to finally see... anything solid. He is alone and pathetic. His life is fake. His girlfriend is a coddle, completely unfamiliar with his dark side or with any other darkness in the world. Her parents are rich, even his own job is her father's credit! While appearing to have "everything", he actually has nothing. And after trying real hard, studying, working, climbing upwards, he reaches the peak of the mountain. But then in front of him, there lies the abyss. The most mournful scene... is a woman getting a heart-attack in the bus. "We're all gonna die anyway". The movie seems to be the personification of death as the actual relief, sanctuary, and the default. In this case, life is just a pointless agony."The less of YOU, the more of ME, that is my victory." Is there anything creative in this movie, despite its complete destructiveness? Maybe it's a reminder of how alive you actually are... I can't think of anything else. The closer you approach to death, the further away you are from it? For it starts liking you and becomes your friend! And each time, it teaches you the unforgettable lessons. You might just end up with the feeling you're gonna live forever! That is why you love it. Because it is so good at deceiving. In fact, it is the best. And always blame it on the movies.

Although the idea seemed potentially good, it was not realised well. There is some eye candy however, and the gore is fairly minimal. Some scenes did not really fit with the plot, the unusual elderly prostitute seemed random and fairly uncalled for. The acting is generally poor, and you do not find yourself caring much for any of the characters. The makers may have been going for a cool or even cold leading role, but it comes across as just some guy who doesn't really care very much about the dramatic events occurring in his life. Unrealistic in terms of what doctors actually do, not only standing around corpses smoking crack. Advice: watch something else. If your in the mood for gore and death there is always Saw.

I am not yet sure if i liked this movie or not. Seeing the very hot Milo naked was a very pleasant experience for me, however if he had not have been in the film i don't think i would have continued to watch. It had the same kind of depressing feel that Flatliners had which was OK, i suppose, but it was slow, very slow and didn't seem to give any suspense.I think the only good scenes were; Milo being naked, the cutting up of the bodies (what we saw of it), the blowing up of the doctors, and the the very end where the ring leader was drugged and dissected while still alive and conscious. As much as i love Milo, i think he made a mistake going for this one, he was the only reason i kept watching.

The script is awful, the story itself is eh, the music is pretty good but I don't know if it was appropriate or not for this genre as I rarely (if ever) watch movies in the horror/suspense/thriller/slight porn genre. The acting was mostly horrible, except the two main characters.Milo Ventimiglia is a great lead actor in this film, who plays a doctor (forensic pathologist) who is manipulated/conned into becoming a part of a series of crimes involving drugs, sex, and other such things. The antagonist, played by Michael Weston was the other great actor. He played the crazy druggie doctor who gets Milo into this mess in the first place. The highlights of the movie is watching Milo Ventimiglia in a role other than Peter "The Keanu Reeves of Heroes" Petrelli, seeing Alyssa Milano's boobs (not really my style), and laughing at the script. I thought Milo did a great job, though. In this movie, his acting style featured the boyish yet introspective charm of Toby Maguire in movies previous to Spiderman 3 and as a Toby Maguire fan, I'd like to see him have some competition in movies.I was also floored by seeing images of Milo in underwear, but that's not really meant for a review hehe. (And I saw his butt, too from many angles. It wasn't really that great of a butt, but it did make me smile)

Were "Awake" starring Jessica Alba and Terrance Howard stumbled this latest hospital drama succeeds. True Pathology is never as smart of interesting as it thinks it is, it manages to do the one thing "Awake" failed to do. It buries deep beneath your skin providing suffocating and uncompromisable tension and even if the payoff is far from brilliant the tension alone is commendable. Its sick, but unlike its trailer lead us to believe "Pathology" is far from slick. Combining the warn-out smarts of saw and the torturous gore of "hostel" to make what could very easily be called "just another exercise in gore porn" It's in agreement then 40% of Pathology stinks filled with bloated ego's and dry theory's. Which means a good 60% is left for the one thing it gets right. Horror. Warning Pathology is not for the faint of heart; a lot of blood is being splashed around more so than any other film this year. And with this you don't just get you low budget rubbery tomato sauce, this stuff looks genuine. Its acting talents are commendable but forgettable, all providing convincing if big headed performances the males constantly clashing heads and talking in a deeper voice than though possible. Trust me Pathology is far from classy. If you forget your expectations and go into the cinema expecting your average horror flick this won't disappoint just don't go and see this back to back with Awake. This is not the same kind of film, If you like one you'll hate the other. The story goes that Pathologist Ted Grey is brought into a secret society who all believe that there should be more dead bodies and less human beings. One by one they must kill a civilian in the method they chose and bring the corpse to the table in which the five other pathologists must work out how he was murdered. And how do you win? Only by murdering in a fashion that the other pathologists cannot detect allows you to win this sick and twisted game.Pathology isn't afraid to play dirty stealing ideas from torture porn such as Saw and Hostel but one thing it does bring to the table is morality. At points in the film you uncontrollably sympathies with these sadistic killers and for what? What they call reliving this earth of the scum that infect it. Much like Aileen Wurnos in "Monster" you can understand her.Motives making this far more interesting that it starts out being. As long as you're willing to take the bad with the good there is a lot to like here. Its realistic and bone crunching horrific moments that will feaster in your mind for days on end down to its humorous yet big headed characters who will either entertain or annoy, Just don't expect to be moved or to be able to use your brain there's nothing to be left to the imagination here. This is your everyday torture porn flick that delivers more on the trailer than it does in the film.Which is a real shame considering its potential; this could have been a grown-up thriller that doesn't rely on a dumb premise but rather on the subjects being raise. If they were to make a bigger fuss over morality and ethics this would have been far more interesting. Shame.

I'm absolutely stunned at how stupid directors and producers have become to depict doctors in such shabby light! I bet they have a personal grudge against doctors. Or else why would anyone construct such a seemingly stupid movie, where medicos are depicted as killers! This is sending a wrong message. The movie's gory and is full of sexual content. The only thing which stands out amidst all that crap is the acting skills of the lead actors. Its stunning to see what good performances can do to a mindless script. That was the only thing which kept me in my seat throughout the one and half odd hours. And that's the only reason why I've given it 5/10 instead of 1/10.If you want to see what doctors are absolutely NOT, go watch this movie. Otherwise, strictly stay a mile away from this. This is one nauseating, inaccurate depiction of the lives of doctors. Its better to remain ignorant about their lives than to have a misconception.
-
This was really quite an unpleasant film and one that it difficult to recommend at any level. The characters are very poorly constructed. The villains (or victims) have only enough detail to allow their subsequent destruction He is a child abuser, we can now do whatever depravity we wish. The heroes are unpleasant, egoistic hedonists who can only gain pleasure through suffering. The acting is stiff and stilted. No range of emotions are demonstrated and the acting is reduced to stereotyped visual clichés.The plot is unbelievable. There is no need for the secret deserted pathology room when they work in a fully equipped department, the gore is unrealistic and the medical puzzles are unfeasible and pointless. There is no redeeming feature to the film unless it is possibly to justify the film "Funny Games".One is left feeling the need for a shower; dirty, guilty and disappointed. A film best to avoid.

Wondering again about sex and horror, I dove into three examples, as varied as I could find. This one surprised. I usually look for losing myself in the cinematically specific narrative. Its where the experience is to be found, you know. But sometimes the writing by itself is enough. This writing is tight, effective. It reminds me that good writing is rare. If these are the guys behind "Crank," then I guess I need to check it out.Interestingly, the fabric of the writing has nothing to do with either sex or horror. These are just there: an occasional breast and/or body provide a way to denote a nonchalance that used in the story. The story hoists a conventional device onto a novel shelf. The reference is the detective story where the viewer is presented with a corpse and we have to by clues figure out what happened. It is an amazingly effective and flexible narrative approach, but as it turns out many viewers are lazy and don't want to play the game. So we watch on-screen detectives do all the work and please us with the answers, provided at the "back of the book." In this case, the mysteries themselves are incidental, two characters involved in a contest to write mysteries. Incrementally, they become more personally embodied. If it weren't so clever, I'd be complaining about the laziness of viewers. But as it is, I'll celebrate whatever market forces there are that reward clever writers.Ted's Evaluation -- 2 of 3: Has some interesting elements.

I was very surprised and a little disappointed to see the low IMDb rating this film has thus far (6.1/10). While the movie is definitely not for children, nor for those adverse to blood/gore, nor for those disturbed by scenes of kinky sex; for the rest of us this is an entertaining movie with lots of morbidly amusing moments. After a freakish opening scene Alyssa Milano kicks off the movie moaning "F*$% Me..." The story then quickly progresses to the mortuary where several morbid scenes of pathologists ripping open bodies while cracking jokes and playing with body parts occurs. And thats just the beginning. The cinematography is excellent and the setting is superb. The storyline and plot are mostly predictable with a few surprises thrown in. The acting is decent, nothing great yet nothing that detracts from the film. The dialog is well-written and morbidly amusing at times. This is by far the best film I've seen Alyssa Milano in although she has a relatively small part.Pathology is pure escapism, glorifying sociopathic behavior while reveling in money, sex and power. A wildly entertaining film from a relatively newbie director.
