Too bad this is Hilary's best movie... posted on 28 Aug 2009
I thought it was impossible for Hilary Duff's movies to get worse, but Raise Your Voice proves that it can. First of all, let me just say that I'm not an anti-Hilary person. I'm an anti-Hilary MOVIE person. And it's just so sad that they call this Hilary's best movie ever. The first few scenes are pretty good. Hilary shows us that she can at least act. But then the rest of the movie takes a spin and we end up watching Terri Fletcher everywhere. Even if Hilary's the star of the show, it doesn't mean that the entire movie has to be focused on her (like in all Hilary Duff movies). In the music school, all the students are talented, EXCEPT Hilary Duff. She can't sing, and in the first few classes they're singing a song in chorus, but we never actually see them perform this song. Then there's the oh-so-forced seduction of Oliver James, and of course Hilary comes in and sees them, cries and runs off. Wow, like that wasn't expected. Finally, we see the grand finale wherein the students give a show. We see an array of talented musicians...then comes Hilary Duff. That song was nothing special...in fact, it wasn't even a good song. Surprise, surprise, they didn't win and the violinist won. If you have brains, you would've realised from the beginning that the violinist would win because it was already obvious from the start when she said, 'I wish my family had more money, I need this scholarship,' blah, blah. All in all, only a little girl who loves Hilary Duff would enjoy, and I mean ENJOY this film. Otherwise...it's only worth watching for the musical acts.

This movie is great from beginning to end.
Hilary Duff shines at her very brightest in this outstanding motion picture. Her acting is her best yet, and her singing is top-notch. She brings the house down with "Someone to Watch Over Me," "Jericho," and her hit single "Fly." She doesn't disappoint her fans and is sure to win over nearly every viewer of this movie.
The supporting cast is great. John Corbett is excellent as always as Hilary's teacher. Oliver James who previously starred in "What a Girl Wants" gets a better role and handles it like a pro. I had never seen Jason Ritter before, but I will be looking for his movies from now on. His portrayal of Hilary's brother is truly great!
The story is actually quite dramatic. This should not be classified with "Duff Fluff." The basic story is about a girl who has a tragedy in her life and tries to come to grips with it while attending a summer music program. The story is a lot more detailed than that, but I don't want to include any spoilers. It sounds corny, but it comes off as very believable and genuine. There are light moments too, but the overall feel is that of a drama.
So, if it has a luminous star, cool music, great support, and a truly above-average story, why do so many people hate it? There are two main reasons.
The first is the star. Hilary Duff has a lot of people who hate her. A quick search of the internet reveals dozens of sights bashing her in the crudest terms. I have heard nearly every interview she has ever done and several other interviews where other people talked about her. She is always cheerful and sweet. So, why the bashing? BECAUSE SHE ISN'T A TRAMP! Every performance she has given (and I've just about seen them all) has been completely clean. Her music videos are absolutely the cleanest on MTV in the past decade. A lot of people want tramps. That is why another former Disney star whom we all know has put out a video lately that's going to give Britney a run for her money. I, for one, don't think an actress should be hated because she ISN'T a tramp.
The other reason is very similar. The movie itself is very clean. The PG rating turns a lot of people off. Aside from one scene involving teenage drinking, this movie is very clean and has a positive message on dealing with grief. There is no sex, no violence, and only a little very mild language. I'm not saying that any movie that's PG-13 or R is trash; I'm just saying that there is no reason to skip a great movie just because it's clean.
Overall, this movie is a fantastic experience for everyone over about 10 or so. (I only say this because there are some "Thematic Elements" that might bother small children.) So, grab your family and watch "Raise Your Voice." It's very possibly the best movie of the year.

This movie enchants you at first sight of a trailer. This wonderfully inspired teen girl Terri (played by Hilary Duff)has a dream to sing. Her brother is a great encouragement to her. He secretly records his lil' sis singing her heart out in her prime time of fun.And he sends it to a top music school. Then when they are on their way home from a fun, but not permissible by their parents, concert, tragedy tears Terri's heart in two. She finds out later that her brother had signed her up for the school. She battles with the idea to go, since her brother had been gone she hasn't had the real desire to sing. But as she goes through the classes at the school she goes through a heart metamorphosis and comes out of her shell of pain and her brothers memories are always with her to help her all the wayThis movie shows Hilary's real singing talent. She has amazing chemistry with Oliver James. This movie is completely clean and will be appealing to all ages. It comes out on to DVD and Video on Febuary 15. Buy it rent it, just see it! Great movie!!!!!!!

I went to see Raise Your Voice on Jan 1 when it came out in Australia and i absolutely loved it. I don't know why it did so bad in USA because its so much better than most of the American movies. It is definitely the best movie Hilary Duff has been in, I found it to be really emotional even though i am a guy but i absolutely 100% love Hilary. I hate how people keep comparing Hilary with all the other young celebrities like Lindsay & Paris Hilton the fact of the matter is you don't have to take your clothes off to have good movies and have songs go into the USA Top 20 or the AUS Top 20.I LOVED RAISE YOUR VOICE, so if u like emotional 80% of the time and Comedy 20% u'd love this.

Raise Your Voice (Sean McNamara, 2004)
I never even expected to watch the latest Hillary Duff movie, Raise Your Voice. I certainly never expected to actually like it.
Now I'll admit, I'm just as lust-crazed over the divine Miz Duff as the next red-blooded male (deal with it, folks, she's 18 now and we're allowed), but I'll also be the first to admit that she's not a world-class actress. It's almost as if someone gave her melodrama lessons. Hopefully she'll grow out of it as she gets farther into her acting career and gets away from Nickelodeon veterans like McNamara, who encourage such behavior (it seems to appeal to their target audience, e.g. my daughter). Were this a Hilary Duff vehicle, it would have probably gone down in flames pretty fast. It works, however, because McNamara had the presence of mind to realize he was directing a theatrical release and had to appeal to a wider audience-- something few TV directors seem capable of. Thus, he surrounded Duff with an ensemble of talent that, while mostly unknown at this point, will not stay so for long. About the biggest names in the movie, aside from Duff's, are lent by John Corbett (Northern Exposure), David Keith (If...Dog...Rabbit... and more Sci-Fi originals than you can shake a stick at), and Rebecca DeMornay (Risky Business). The rest are promising rising stars who can actually act, headed up by Oliver James (What a Girl Wants), Dana Davis (Coach Carter), Johnny Lewis (Underclassman), and Kat Dennings (The 40 Year Old Virgin), all of whom fit the same young-and-beautiful profile as Duff. Lewis, especially, will be going places; he has an infectious enthusiasm for his character (and, one surmises, his work) that causes him to steal every scene he's in.
Do you need a plot synopsis? Duff meets voice. Duff loses voice. Etc. There's some stuff about her family (done far better in the recent The Safety of Objects), some incredibly bad taste in music exhibited, and a lot of extraneous fluff, but the core of the movie could well become a guilty pleasure for Duffophiles. *** -
In RAISE YOUR VOICE, Terri Fletcher(Hilary Duff) has always had a close relationship with her brother, Paul(Ritter). When they sneak out to a concert and get hit by a drunk driver(Terri survives the accident, leaving Paul dead), she feels terrible. She then loses her passion for singing. She was hoping to attend a summer music program in LA, but her father(David Keith) says she can't go. Terri's mom and aunt sneak her in and tell her father that Terri is spending the summer with her aunt.I am surprised that people didn't think this was a great change for Hilary. All of her other roles were the same; but in this, her character isn't all that different but the heartfelt script brings much emotion into Terri's role, giving Hilary the opportunity to show everyone that she can do a drama. She convinced me.A lot of sadness is brought in through her brother's death. Hilary Duff is good at crying and the rest of the cast is pretty good. Oliver James is great at Hilary's boyfriend, Jay. And John Corrbett is fine as the loose music teacher. Good job, Hilary. I hope to see a movie like this from you again: smart, thematic, romantic, and humorous. Mostly the thematic.PG- thematic elements, mild language, and brief sensuality.

Hilary Duff drops her worst film yet, playing a "talented" singer who earns a scholarship to a renowned L.A. music school, where she learns not only about the complexities of choir practice, but also about the pains of, like, growing up. What could have been tolerable fluff instead becomes torturous drama, thanks to almost everyone involved, including cliché-addicted writer Sam Schreiber (sassy black roommate? check!), hack director Sean McNamara (previous experience? "3 Ninjas: High Noon At Mega Mountain") and most of the cast, particularly a plastic Duff. She laughs, cries and sings, all without much range in emotion. It's as if someone botoxed her performance.

i'm not a very big fan of teen movies but this one is really good. i think hilary duff was great in this movie and jason ritter was great as well. when jason's character dies in that car accident i cried and seeing hilary's character in that hospital bed was even sadder. even though there was some sad moments in this movie it was the best movie i've seen in a long
time. i've seen a couple of hilary's movies but i think this is
one of my favorites ( next to cinderella story) that is. -
i really enjoyed this movie a lot. I think that this was Hilary Duff's best movie. It was funny, sad, and exciting. I hope all of the rest of her movies are just as good as this one. I was considering not to see it but in the end I said let me just see. I cant wait for this movie to come out on DVD. And so I didn't look like at idiot I took my 6 year old sister with me but that was a mistake. I really like the songs in the movie. My favorite was "Someones Watching Over Me" I also like the song "Jericho" and I also like "Fly". The music was excellent ,the movie was excellent, the actors, and actress were excellent. I want to see this movie again. i love Hilary Duff in this movie she was awesome, how did she do this movie plus coming out with a new album and do A Cinderella Story and in 2005 doing The Perfect Man, and Outward Blonde.

OK, for starters, I love bad, cheesy teen movies. There, I've said it. Movie producers and director can feed me the cheesiest dialogs, the most predictable story lines, the most unlikely scenarios and I'll STILL lap it all up. Basically, if at the end of the day the guy gets the girl, I'm a happy camper.Having said that however, even I have my limits. And frankly Raise Your Voice is one of those movies that goes far beyond those limits. Not so much because of the flimsy plot. Or the terrible acting. Or the incredibly blown up stereotypes. Or even the fact you can predict every single second of the movie. No, the main problem is that the premise of the movie is WRONG. You see, to make this movie work, it was fairly necessary that the main character could actually sing. But somewhere along the way, someone at the casting agency made the cock-up of casting Hilary Duff. Frankly, it's a simple case of not being a mix 'n match situation...You see, it's hard to imagine a girl getting admitted to allegedly the best music school in America on the basis of singing (badly) along to Katrina and the Waves' Walking on Sunshine. After getting told of plenty of times that she's simply not very good (no kidding...), she allegedly improves, sings her final song (supported by tons of back up vocals to make it sound a bit less screechy) and everyone loves it. SHE STILL SOUNDS EXACTLY THE SAME THOUGH, YOU IDIOTS.In conclusion, it was never going to an Oscar candidate, but with a proper lead, it would have been a perfectly acceptable straight to DVD, rainy Sunday afternoon when your tired no-brainer. Sadly, now it's just a pile of garbage.

Well, I'm 32 and even I need a tweeny girlie flick every now and then. I must say, Hilary Duff is one of the few stars of young Hollywood who could grace a movie like this - one I'd not be scared to show little daughters of any age. Her movies are sweet without overmoralizing. I particularly enjoyed this movie, because, as a musician, I'm happy to see movies which champion the fine arts - and this one involves many talented young people. Special mention should go to Jason Ritter - he is shaping up to be a fine young actor. Good flick.

In Raise Your Voice, Hilary Duff plays Terri Fletcher, an Arizona teen who longs to be-you guessed it-a singer. She's a faithful member of her church choir and an obedient daughter-unlike her rebellious brother (Jason Ritter, Joan of Arcadia) who constantly clashes with their strict father (David Keith, Daredevil). When Terri is accepted into a summer program at a Los Angeles performing arts school, her father forbids her to go, but after personal tragedy strikes, Terri lies to her father and takes off for LA with the help of her mother (Rita Wilson, Runaway Bride) and her artsy Aunt Nina (Rebecca De Mornay, Identity). Hilary Duff plays Terri, a teenage girl determined to follow her musical dreamsTerri's life soon gets complicated as she struggles to keep up her deception while trying to fit in with some very talented and competitive students. A scholarship will be awarded at the end of the summer, and most of the students want the money more than they want to make friends. Intimidated, Terri struggles to even squeak out her first solo with the whole class watching. In time, she gains confidence and starts to make friends, including Jay whose jealous ex-girlfriend is also a fellow student. John Corbett serves as Terri's teacher, mentor and friend, and the film's message of following your dreams and reaching for the stars is infused into every scene and musical number.Jay (Oliver James) and Terri (Duff) make, uh, beautiful music togetherRaise Your Voice is a scrubbed-up Fame redux that gives the 17-year-old Duff the opportunity to continue developing her acting skills while showcasing her vocal chops. What's unique about this mostly predictable movie is its goodness and its nods toward faith and family when it could have so easily gone the other way. Writer Sam Schreiber made a point of incorporating elements of faith into the script, including a cross pendant Terri wears and relies on for comfort throughout the film. There is also a powerful scene in which Terri, turning to her faith in a time of crisis, goes to a church to pray.

I loved this movie! I agree, I cried whilst watching this movie! It was so good and the actors were fantastic! The story line was great and Hilary acted so well! This movie made me realize how lucky I am and that other people do, do it much harder then me! I absolutely loved this movie, I could watch it over and over and over and over again, I could never get enough of it! There was a mixture of themes,at times it was funny, other times sad and other times happy and what would a movie be without that one mean person? I Know I might be repeating myself here, but this movie was great and I recommend this movie to anybody, no matter what your into I think that you would enjoy this movie! It was great and it would be a pleasure to see this movie again!
