Not a bad film, but should have been about 3 Canadian snowboarders instead (like they actually were) posted on 08 June 2009
The movie opens with a naked bum(homeless man) running through the woods scared out of his mind being chased by something. And then there is a party scene which was a bit unnecessary. It should have started out with the 3 thirty something snow boarder guys on the road after the naked guy and bypass all the stuff from the stupid party. But it was just an excuse to show more T&A.And what was with making the 3 guys from Jersey? And even supplying them with a car with an American flag and New Jersey plates. I could tell right away none of those unknown actors were American. They totally sounded Canadian! The only one who could pass was Steve Warren who played the hilarious and nutty Ivan character, but I think Steve was the only American actor in this indie film. What pisses me off about a lot of Canadian cinema (especially this one) is that they are never based in Canada. This is an insult because we have large well known cities, small towns and backwoods etc,so this movie could have easily been based in the Province it was filmed. However I think there was one real shot of Colorado which was nice, so a better way to do it would have been to make the 3 snowboarders Canadians traveling through America instead which is what they obviously were! I don't think it would have hurt the film at all,in fact would have made it more believable. I don't get what it is with Canadian film makers! This was my main issue about this movie otherwise it was interesting and I started to get into it after the party scene. It seemed more like a satire then a horror movie.I just found everything about it amusing. The gore was good and disturbing at times. The most disgusting scene to me was when they stopped at a redneck diner and what the cook did to their food.I nearly got sick! I did sit through the whole movie without turning it off so I guess it wasn't all bad.

Another Texas Chainsaw Massacre rip off! How many more do we have to deal with.....? posted on 29 July 2009
In this none to original rehash of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, two guys seek refuge in a cabin owned by an elderly gentlemen who seems kind enough, however this is only a mask he wears as it turns out he's really a cannibalistic maniac who with another member of his family, loves to kill & eat passing travelers & when the kids discover their injured friend's grisly remains (who went missing from the car when they went to get help following a car accident in the country back roads) they attempt to escape their clutches before they too become dinner. Foul mouthed & none to original horror outing provides plenty of gore & some good direction but overall is burdened by mediocre acting, characters we care less for & the annoying fact that we've seen all this done before (& better I might add in other movies) I mean is this sitting well with everyone? How many times must we view this same old story of passing travelers falling into the clutches of cannibalistic backwoods madmen?! We've seen it done so many times in the past five years that had it not been for the odd horror movie (though not to many) that I've seen that didn't feature this same plot, I could swear that this was the only kind of horror film ever made anymore period & sadly this adds nothing new to the mix & will probably be forgotten by you the viewer within a matter of a few days like many of the endless cycle of Texas Chainsaw Massacre themed rip-offs that have over cluttered our video shelves these past few years. The film's low budget roots also disappoint as it goes for all the same tricks done in other indie films, the nudity, unnecessary sex scenes, scenes of naked girls making out & overly obnoxious characters. Not the worst horror film out there but really not seeing either.** stars

This is the bastard son of Hostel and some stupid random cannibal movie. Bad acting, worse plot. The story is chock full of dumb clichés, weak plot points and stuff that just plain doesn't make sense. Characters behave in ways that only if they were written really badly would. Pointless shots of the bad guys being *bad*. The ending was a joke right? No one would actually make that dumb of an ending. Oh wait, I watched it, it did end like that. I have to say the effects were pretty good, it was gross and the gross was nicely done. Just not worth watching for that alone even if you are a grue hound. Stay away from this stinker.

I picked up this movie at random in my video store, based on the cool cover and the interesting plot. What I got was a cool little flick about cannibal woodsman laying siege to a group of people who's car breaks down on a snowboarding weekend. The movie has some good suspense, memorable bad guys (especially the crazy older dude), and a freaky killers mask that ranks up there with the creepier masks in horror. The movie has some great gore, and pretty good acting for a low budget movie. If you are looking for a good Halloween movie night flick that you haven't seen before, check it out, it's a good gore flick that will keep you entertained.

when the movie first started I almost turned it off because the acting was horrible, but i am glad I left it on because once the story unfolds it is a great ride.I really appreciate the lengths the actors went to make it realistic like running through the snow in bare feet through a quarter of the movie that really made me cringe because you can almost feel how cold they are.the effects were top notch as far as the gore goes, which I was quite surprised at because of what a low budget production it was.I highly recommend it, as long as you can get past the acting

The unusual taste I have for the Canadian cinema makes me loose any objectivity (more than the usual) and I usually finish enjoying it more for its subtle humor and attitude than for its narrative. And when I'm in front of a Canadian horror film,I loose my objectivity even more because I use to tolerate levels of mediocrity when there are monsters or blood, although I have to admit there are some excellent Canadian horror movies by their own merit (for example,Ginger Snaps and Videodrome).Scarce combines being Canadian and being a horror film,so I tried to ignore its country of origin, and I decided to analyze it as any other horror film. And Scarce resulted to be a very entertaining and intense horror film with great locations and non-stop energy. The best element from this movie are the characters. They never commit absurd things and they act as normal human beings,as difference to many horror films.Plus, they are likable,so the spectator finishes tense for their destinies. As contrast,I can mention craps like Joy Ride : Dead Ahead or Dark Ride, where the characters were so hateful that I wanted them to die.In Scarce, the characters use their common sense. Also, this movie offers a lot of blood, something I always appreciate on a horror film, and a disturbing atmosphere. The fails I found on this movie are two.For one sight, the performances did not convince me completely...I think they could have been more polished. And,for the other sight,I would have preferred a better ending. It's not a great movie, but I had a very entertaining and intense time watching Scarce.Unless you are a sensitive person,I recommend it with confidence.

By all accounts, "Scarce" should bore any avid horror fan to tears. It is a plot we have seen over and over and over again, and in the end, offers nothing new. However, the film does so many things well that it ends up being an enjoyable slasher film that is better than a lot of stuff I have seen make it into theaters lately. The film starts badly. In fact, I rolled my eyes more than once and was prepared to shut it off. We see a bunch of college aged guys at a huge party drinking, trying to get laid and spouting of some bad dialogue. However, this only lasts for about five minutes, when we flash forward to the next morning. We meet our three main characters--all typical college guys--who are heading back home from a short vacation of snowboarding in Colorado. They banter back and forth during the drive and eventual hit a huge snowstorm in Pennsylvania. They stop at a diner, where the have an encounter with some locals after asking for directions. Obviously, any horror fan knows where this leads, as the directions they are given are bogus and they end up crashed in the middle of nowhere in a blizzard. In the crash, one guy breaks his leg, so the other two venture out to find help. They get to a cabin where they meet up with a seemingly friendly local who offers them food and place to stay. Well, turns out (surprise!) this local is actually a cannibal, who, with the help of a few of his buddies, kills travelers and harvests their meat to make it through the scarce winters. The film is the combination of so many films I have seen from, "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" to "Hostel" to "Wrong Turn" to "Calvaire." However, the production is top notch and the filmmakers know how to create tension and suspense using wide camera shots and angles. Additionally, our protagonists actually are pretty likable, and though they make some dumb choices, we can't help but to root for them. The gore is pretty well done and plentiful enough to satisfy gore hounds. We get chopped up bodies, slit throats, decapitations, and shotgun blasts. The setting of the film is foreboding and I really did "feel" the cold, particularly the last 10 minutes of the film when our main characters are running for their lives during the wind and snow in nothing but their boxer and T-shirts! It is a scene that is many ways reminded me of the highly stylized and effective final scenes of the French film "Calvaire" and I think is done equally well here.My biggest qualm with the film is that I HATED the ending. Too many recent horror flicks are using this "twist" to be different and effective, when it is actually becoming a predictable cliché. I was actually pretty invested in the two main characters and really wanted to scream when the film ended the way it did.Maybe I am becoming too soft in my reviews, but I actually enjoyed this film quite a bit and highly recommend it, despite the low IMDb rating and reviews here. If you can get past the beginning (and the end) of this film, it is a very well done and competently directed film that ends up being a lot better than it had any reason to be.FrightMeter Grade: B

On a snowboard trip in the Rocky Mountains (and the following roadtrip), three 40-year-old Canadian guys (oh, sorry, according to the movie they're twentysomethings from Jersey) become the victims of a pair of cannibalistic locals. The film opens strangely: A guy that looks like a bulimic Jesus is running naked through the woods, cut up and bleeding from what looks like a rough torture. Without showing much, we assume (from his howling scream) that he is caught by whatever was pursuing him. From there, we move to some kind of house party where a few unattractive middle-aged men posing as twentysomethings hook up with girls so far out of their league they're not even in the same sport. After a good bit of drinking, drugs, sex, and some bathroom humour, we move to the actual plot which really didn't need the previous twenty minutes: The three guys, after crashing the car in middle-of-nowhere Pennsylvania, become prey for some backwoods nutjobs. One of the most damaging elements of this film is most evident here, in the first twenty minutes. The worst parts are the acting and writing. In this genre, those two technical elements aren't always the most important. I mean, look how much Dario Argento has accomplished and he can't write to save his life. Unfortunately, the guys behind 'Scarce' are building the entire film on those two things and they're certainly no Argento. Anyway, what matters here is the horror. Luckily, the film does manage to get a good bit of horror; but, mostly, it just feels like gore & violence & torture for the sake of it. There's no real cause or reason for the majority of it other than to show what the filmmakers were capable of. Sadly, they weren't capable of much. The gore, while excessive, was far from believable and was far from grotesque, as it seems they thought it was. Essentially, what the film ends up turning into is a strange hybrid of midwest Wolf Creek mixed with The Most Dangerous Game. Some of the hunting scenes are interesting, but they just end with an extremely lame and unthrilling climax. Overall, it's just a pretty basic, below-average torture flick without much merit except the funny Canadian accents and some poorly done gore.Obligatory Horror Elements:- Subgenre: Torture/Exploitation- Violence/Gore: Quite a bit of gore, but it's not very well done, and it seems to be done just because they can.- Sex/Nudity: Over the course of five minutes, we get numerous sex scenes (including one lesbian encounter) with more than a few lovely ladies.- Scares/Suspense: I didn't get any.- Mystery: It wasn't really going for any mystery so there is none.- - -Final verdict: 3.75/10. Meh.-AP3-

I saw this at the Toronto Festival of Fear (Fan Expo) this year in August 2008. I was super excited to see it because I kept seeing the trailer for it at the Anchor Bay booth. I was not disappointed. Great amount of gore and some really awesome shots. It's a perfect Anchor Bay title and will fit in perfectly with some of the stuff they've already released. I'm excited for this to come out on DVD! I also enjoyed the plot of the movie. The script was pretty good and got the point across. I really enjoyed that. And I REALLY liked the death scenes. The amount of blood and gore was PERFECT. That's my favorite part of a movie. Good job, guys!

This movie is a rare gem in the movie world. It is the first work of a young film making duo that has actually made it to theatres and now on to DVD with wide distribution. Kudos to the writer's/producers for this remarkable feat in itself!! The movie itself... alright, it's not the best movie I've ever seen, but it is Definitely not the worst either!! (Open Water, Last Winter... come on, those were horrible!!) What we get to see here is the rudimentary offering from a couple of real guys with a common dream. The production is good, the effects are excellent, and the rest of the movie really isn't bad. Sure, there are some "cliché" aspects; crazy amounts of profanity, seemingly pointless nudity, (did I just say that??) and the acting is certainly not 'A-List'... but the end result is a raw work of art that if nothing else leaves us wanting to see where these guys go from here. At the VERY least, one has to appreciate the countless hours of hard work and determination that lead to the reward of this DVD. How many small town folk can say that their movie made the big screen?? SCARCE may be a rough around the edges inaugural offering, but I for sure can't wait for the next one!!

*Possible spoilers* I really wasn't expecting much as I didn't even know the movie existed until I saw it at Blockbuster. The premise of stranded teens/twenty-somethings has been done to death, but there were a few good surprises throughout the movie that made it passable. Without reading reviews or knowing about the movie beforehand, I wasn't expecting Ivan to be a cannibal. It was obvious Ivan had something to do with their friend being pulled from their car, but I don't think many predicted he was going to cut him up, eat him, and sell his parts. The gore was messed up and twisted. When you see the movie's a Canadian film, you don't think you'll see people being chopped up, have their toenails pulled off, etc. I give them props for that. The acting was horrible. I liked Dustin, though. Hopefully he's in other movies to come.I'd recommend renting this.

I watched SCARCE last night and I thought it was a great film. Simple story, three guys go on a snowboarding trip, crash their car in the middle of nowhere(the whole country is in the middle of a snow blizzard). A strange guy turns up to offer help...but he turns out to be a hunting cannibal! All in all, this was just up my street, it had a good atmosphere, the acting was OK, and if it's gore you are after - look no further! The Brothers Gore have done a superb job on this.I have read a few negative reviews on this on IMDb, one said the gore effects were bad...are you blind! This is and Independent horror film, and one of the best I have seen. The guys who made this Jesse T Cook and John Geddes, wrote, directed and starred in this...kudos to those guys. Didn't Peter Jackson start like that with Bad Taste!!!Brilliant effort a strong 7.5 out of 10

So I was just visiting family in Toronto Canada and picked up a copy of this movie SCARCE at a Wal-Mart there. My friend from home downloaded it and said he was not a huge fan but I absolutely loved this film. It's got some cheesy parts but it reminds me of the classics I used to watch growing up. It's one of those movies you keep on your shelf for years and years. I was just reading some of the reviews on here comparing it to Hostel? It's not like Hostel at all or Wrong Turn!!! This movie is funny, gory, and genuinely frightening at times and was made for 300k or something. Steve Warren is amazing in it playing Ivan. I watched the featurette and I can't believe those two guys directed, wrote, and starred in the film and ran through the snow in their bare feet!!! This is the low budget spirit for sure!! I see it comes out here in the US in May. OKAY the lesbian scene was a little too much!

I recently watched this flick online and let me tell you, it was pretty awesome. Some excellent kills and chase scenes. This movie sort of reminded me of Wrong Turn and Shredder. It had the snow boarding part, like in shredder, then it had the cannibalism part, like in Wrong Turn. It also had a pretty decent storyline about a group of friends who are stoked for a weekend of snowboarding and partying, only to be stranded in the mountains. When they come across a lodge, they decide to seek shelter, only to be stalked by a group of vicious cannibals. If you aren't a huge fan of extreme violence and gore, then might want to skip out on this flick, but I do recommend it to other hardcore horror fans.

I finally was able to track this movie down. I had read a lot about it on the web and it sounded really cool. Snowboarders fall prey to cannibals in the woods. Sounds like my kind of movie and it I was not disappointed. It started out a little slow but picked up in the middle and didn't let go. For a low budget indie film it had really good gore effects. You could tell a lot of hard work was put into making this. I mean I don't know if I could run around the in the dead of winter in Canada in nothing but a t-shirt and boxers. When I was watching that I could feel the cold. Over all, a good horror movie with plenty of violence and gore! I would recommend this to any one who is into horror movies.

well i saw the trailer for this movie and i Had to watch it. so this morning i sat down to what i thought was gonna be a brutal realistic horror movie. But what i got was a laughable Ulli Lommel type movie. now people r spouting that the gore in this movie is amazing, and u know what its actually quite good. but honestly thats where the compliments end. the acting was so awful i wouldn't believe the director would finish a take with his actors and actually thought he got the shot. in my opinion i would rather never made a movie then make one horrid horrid horrid acting. i TRIED to just let the "acting" go and just focus the movie as a whole, but it was so bad i couldn't. i ended up skippin along the whole way just to get to parts with NO TALKING. it baffles my mind how anyone would let this piece of cr*p to be made, but even more so that some people actually LIKED IT. the only positive about it is the gore. now i am a gore hound, but even that could not get me to somewhat enjoy it.so in closing the movie sucked, the acting was even worse and if u liked it u might wanna check out all the works by Ulli Lommel, specifically BTK Killer.

Yikes!Another low budget Indie depicting backwood folk whom like to eat unsuspecting (idiot) victims. Not exactly a breathe of fresh air, but at least they shot it in the snow, I'll give'em a few points for that... Writer / Director's Jesse Cook and John Geddes have obviously watched their share of 100's of better films with this same story-line, but figured they'd better make their own (and thank God for that!)... "Scarce" is just that, scarce is any real creativity, originality or acting talent (wait till you get a load of the dinner scene... Duh!). Their big name actor is Steve Warren, whom appears to be making a living as a movie extra, and it shows in his lack of acting ability . In fact, no-one in this film has any acting experience and it shows though-out this unpolished turd. On a good note, the gore is admirable but unfortunately we have to sit through mind-numbing stupidity in order to see it...Save yourself the aggravation...
