  • Saving The World... One Homework Assignment At A Time.
Plot Summary:
It all begins at a secret school in the clouds like none on earth: Sky High, the first and only high school for kids with super-human powers going through crime-fighting puberty. At Sky High, the student body throw flames with their footballs, study Villainy with their Chemistry and are divided into Heroes and Sidekicks instead of jocks and geeks. It's an out-of-this-world yet completely recognizable place where cool gadgetry, rampant bravery and awe-inspiring magical skills mix it up with parental battles, peer pressure and dating trouble—with explosively fun results. This year's class features some of the best, brightest and most powerfully gifted super-teens ever assembled. And then there's Will Stronghold. When you're the son of the world's most legendary super heroes, The Commander and Jetstream, people expect you to live up to the family name The problem is that Will is starting with no superpowers of his own and, worst of all, instead of joining the ranks of the Hero class, he finds himself relegated to being a Sidekick. Now he must somehow survive his freshman year while dealing with an overbearing gym coach, a bully with super speed and a dangerous rebel with a grudge (and the ability to shoot fire from his hands)—not to mention the usual angst, parental expectations and girl problems that accompany teenage life. But when an evil villain threatens his family, friends and the very sanctity of Sky High, Will must use his newfound superpowers to save the day and prove himself a Hero worthy of the family tradition.

  • One of the good movies I have seen this summer. posted on 24 Aug 2009

This is a good movie, one of my must gets when it comes out on DVD and I do hope it has all of the special features from the making of the movie to commentary. Now back to the movie, It has romance but done in a nice why by not over emphasizing it, but by subtly showing it from the beginning. The movie also has humor, one of my favorite scenes is where Mr. Medulla ends up with both of the ladies when he is on a double Date with Coach Boomer, now that was funny. It is like a lot of teen movies where there are two groups as usual that go up against each other from time to time or should I say that one group picks on the other just like high school except that most of the kids have powers. Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Gwen gives us one great performance, her character keeps her cards real close and doesn't let on until the end that she is really Royal Pain, now to me that was a surprise I never saw it coming. The great part it the sidekick really get to shine and show that they are heroes. I recommend this movie to any comic Book fan it is a great movie so go see it and enjoy and one other thing Make sure you have enough drink to last the entire movie as well as enough Popcorn and what ever else because you don't want to miss a moment.

  • Great movie! posted on 16 Aug 2009

Sky High is a terrific movie for the 9-13 age group, but anyone can really enjoy it. For a Disney movie, it has fairly good acting and a great concept. Older children may not go for the action parts (it is very unrealistic, though the special effects are excellent), but a love story that captures the feelings of high school is entwined in the story. It was several funny lines, but it is mostly just good fun for younger kids. The actors are around the right age, so it really makes it seem realistic. It's a cute movie that pretty much needs to be seen. I would highly recommend Sky High to anyone who is looking to have a fun time at the movies!

  • decent movie with some good laughs, but studio plants need to cool it down posted on 14 Aug 2009

This was a decent lighthearted movie, relatively fast paced, so one can simply have a good time without noticing the movie shortcomings. But the studio plants really really need to cool it down. I mean it is getting to the point where it is becoming useless to read IMDb reviews of newly released movies.I understand an occasional person giving this movie a 9, maybe someone who has not been to the movies in the past 10 years can be excused for giving it a 10, but realistically for the movie that has a bunch of meaningless lighthearted laughs going for it at best, 5-6 rating should be absolute top. I've been reading IMDb for many years and I remember the time when the rating system was still useful, and comments at least seemed sincere.IMDb needs to do something about it. Well, there are always trusted critics to turn to, and their reviews are available on the internet, so people will always be able to find unbiased info about new releases, and hopefully studios are burning more money in planting these comments on IMDb than they are getting in extra ticket sales. And then MPAA has the heart to complain about piracy?

  • An overall good time. posted on 12 Aug 2009

It may not be the best superhero movie, mainly because it deals with themes that were already established in "The Incredibles". The story is quite simple, actually. It's the average teen drama, but with superpowers. The main protagonist has a crush on the hottest girl in school, but the girl who has been his best friend since they were little kids is secretly in love with him. Not very original, but at least the misunderstandings aren't as painful as other, more over the top, teen dramas. The misfits are the heroes (wrongfully called Sidekicks by the elites) and who appear to be the heroes are actually the villains, not only that, but most of them are sidekicks to the main boss (didn't get that little thing until now)The movie is quite wacky. It's very generous in tilted camera angles and colors. Most of the characters are varied and fun to watch, though initially Disney actor Kurt Russel's character, may seem a little too dumb to be a superhero. And, hey, you get a Linda Carter cameo. WHat can possibly top that! The score by Michael Giacchino isn't as in your face as The Incredibles, but it works fine. Too bad you can't get that one on CD.If it wasn't for the special effects, you might consider it's an original Disney Channel movie, and more intellectual moviegoers might feel scared away. But it's very fun to watch.

  • What A Surprise! posted on 10 Aug 2009

Sky High was a very enjoyable movie that was better than I expected. The previews I thought looked cheesy and kind of dumb but I was really happy with what I saw.Kurt Russell has always been a good actor I think and he did do a good job in this film along with Kelly Preston. The main teenage boy was also great too.The screenplay I thought was witty and fun. I really thought the conversations had good vibe.Coming from the director who did Surviving Christmas, I was kind of afraid. That movie was not the best at all. But this movie. This movie was a big step up! I highly recommend this film if your looking for a family film that is full of fun times. Look for a special appearance by Lynda Carter. I enjoyed her too.

  • Fun family movie for the 7 and up crowd posted on 08 Aug 2009

Took my oldest son and his friend (ages 8 and 11) to see this, and we all really enjoyed it. Unlike a lot of the "family" fare of recent years, there wasn't a bunch of double-meaning adult humor hidden in the story to try to appeal to the parents. The plot line was fairly original (unlike the endless stream of remakes and sequels!), and the acting was quite good--especially by the teens. Some of the special effects were hokey, though most were pretty good. Overall, this movie was totally enjoyable. This isn't truly a spoiler, but wanted to be safe... I felt the movie taught some very good morals regarding friendship, loyalty, acceptance, and self-worth--and none of them were done in an overt manner. My only real complaint was that the main character (supposed to be age 14) did a bit too much kissing... But that's the over-protective mother in me talking. Even so, multiple thumbs up from our crew!

  • Warren is HOT! posted on 02 Aug 2009

I was stuck in a theatre with at least 3 elementry school classes, all of whom found the basics of the film to be very entertaining. But for those of us who want to see something a little more grown up- WATCH THIS MOVIE FOR WARREN PEACE. Played by former model Steven Strait his presence lights up the screen, and I would even go as far as to say he steals the movie. And during scenes where his mature looks are meant to contrast the otherwise silliness of the moment you can tell that he has a future as the next great film star. So for the movie as a whole I would give it a 5 (good enough for kids a and good enough to see more then once without getting bored.) but for Warren i give a 10 which averages out to an 8.

  • Sky High is not that High but still very good posted on 31 Jul 2009

This is a very entertaining movie that was quite funny at times although the movie's villain's plan was very stupid (to me anyway). The Acting was alright but sometimes I felt like i was watching an episode of Lizzy Maguire ( girls going into strops over the stupidest things and stuff like "the popular kids and the losers"). But what the film lacks in story it makes up for in good characters that u actually felt for and cared about. Take for instance Will's best friend Gina who's been best friends with him ever since they were both in "first Grade" she is always very nice to Will and never let him down but at the sight of just one girl in Sky High (hot she may be) Will starts to forget about Gina and poor Gina is left behind while Will walks off with some random girl who he's only known for like one year. Where he has known Gina practically his whole life so I like the way the movie works out.

  • Disney Totally Redeems Theirselves! posted on 25 Jul 2009

sky high is very entertaining. it's both children adult friendly. kids will love the effects and powers and the grown ups will laugh at all the clever references to REAL super heroes and super hero lore. some may complain that it's too campy or cheesy but come on, it's about super heroes! the more out of this world, the better! it's ashame that Disney didn't hype this movie up more. just like EMP'S NEW GROOVE, this movie didn't get the chance it deserved! My only complaints are that the movie is short and NO adam west! So while the cover may make you think twice; this is a very solid movie and way better than some of the crap that Disney is pouring out. this means you, BAMBI 2! jeez!

  • Sky High Hits Record Low 0* posted on 19 Jul 2009

You wonder why Kurt Russell would accept anything like this. Playing a Superman-like character, Goldie Hawn's long-time lover, must be super fool.Sky High refers to a high school over the rainbow. The kids go there and there is anything but academics. You prove how cool you are by showing your strength. Our hero has strong parents but he is a nerd who will have to find his way.A girl, who was really quite evil in another life, tries to turn the tables on all at the annual homecoming. When the plot is resolved, the main character has nerve enough to say that the rest of the school year was boring. What did he call this film-enjoyable?

  • Better than the Incredibles! posted on 25 Jun 2009

When I walked into the theater I was thinking the same thing every adult( and possibly teenagers) were probably thinking: this probably won't be that good. Well I was wrong, dead wrong. This was a great movie. Now here is the thing, in the beginning it starts out kind of stupid, but don't be discouraged and walk out of the theater. As the movie went on I found it to have much, much more laughs than the Incredibles. Also, to all you guys who think Sky High is a rip-off of the Incredibles, by watching it you'll think the Incredibles ripped of this movie. Now, I admit it, without the adult actors most of the comedy would be gone, but I was was extremely surprised by the kid's comedic talent(particularly the "glow boy" with the blonde hair). Tak your kids to this movie, you have to! For those without kids, see it as a guilty pleasure!

  • A stupid Super Hero flick!! posted on 23 Jun 2009

Christopher Reeve's Superman Movies, Michael Keaton's Batman, Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst in the Spider-Man franchise, X-Men, X2, and X-Men 3: The Last Stand. These are all brilliant super hero's brought to life!!! Sky High is a DISGRACE!! This movie makes fun of all of these popular movies!! I can't stand this movie!! If you love Superman, (I hated Superman Returns!) If you love Spider-Man (Spider-Man 3 is flawless along with the other two!!) If you like the Fantastic Four, then you won't like Sky High. The acting is HORRIBLE!!! The references in this movie are ripped off from the TRUE super hero films!! The only GOOD thing about this movie is, Bruce Campbell who plays the strict coach at Sky High. In the first Spider-Man film he played the ring announcer. In Spider-Man 2, he was the snooty usher in the theater at which Mary Jane starts her acting career. And, he played a French Matr'd in Spider-Man 3! He's the only GOOD thing about this movie, like I just said. Otherwise, watch the movie's I listed, except for Superman Returns, Don't see Superman Returns, you will regret it if you do! Just, don't see this movie!!

  • 'Sky High' goofy, campy fun posted on 07 Jun 2009

Title is the name of the prep school that Will Stronghold (Michael Angarano, "Seabiscuit," "Lords Of Dogtown") attends in this silly Disney family picture. It seems the 14-year-old is the son of superhero parents, Commander Stronghold (Kurt Russell, a tower of strength) and Josie Jetstream (Kelly Preston, who can fly at supersonic speeds), but has no such powers. Many of his friends have special abilities, some do not, but everyone expects him to share the powers his parents have. When he does not, he is sent to the Sidekick Class (or "hero support"), taught by the hilarious Dave Foley (as Mr. All-American Boy), to learn the ways of the second banana.During a fight with the son of his father's archenemy, Warren Peace (a flaming Steven Strait), Will's powers' emerge (he has the best of mom and pop), and he becomes the big man on campus. This newfound popularity attracts the beautiful Gwen Grayson (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), while eliciting the jealousy of longtime friend and neighbor, Layla (Danielle Panabaker).Despite the laughable "special" effects (campy and goofy, to be kind, catch the scene where Russell and Preston take on a giant robot), over-the-top acting, and a ludicrous plot, I had a pretty good time watching this. Nice to see a good supporting cast, including Foley, his "Kids in the Hall" co-star, Kevin McDonald (as a huge-headed mad scientist), Lynda Carter (as Principal Powers) and Bruce "Army Of Darkness" Campbell (as Coach Sonic Boomer). The children will most likely have more fun than the adults, but there is still some grown-up humor that keeps us laughing. Everyone will also get a healthy moral lesson about labeling others. It's certainly not the best film around right now, but it isn't the worst.I've seen plenty of those recently.

  • Good for all ages posted on 07 Jun 2009

I think that this movie is really good for all ages. It is a pretty good movie, not exactly the best one, but I think it was pretty good. Pretty much none of the actual events in this movie could actually happen, but they kind of relate to ones that real kids could have in a real school. All of the acting is really good, and the whole plot really makes sense, and is really good. It is yet another one of Disney's great accomplishments, and this movie definitely met my expectations. All of the actors and actresses are really good, especially since they are kids. I really like this movie, and I definitely recommend this movie to anybody.

  • Kurt Russell and Disney: A Marriage of Mediocrity posted on 05 Jun 2009

There really should be a secondary category of movies: the movies you watch when you just had your teeth drilled so you can't laugh out loud or think too hard because of the Tylenol with codeine the dentist thankfully prescribed. If this movie was rated by that scale, and I had enough medication in my system, I MIGHT agree with my nieces that this was "the best movie ever." Or, at least, in that category somewhere. And there would be an explanation for why I continue to find "Bring It On" so oddly fascinating.Since there isn't another category, since I didn't watch this under medication, and since I've already seen "Arsenic and Old Lace," "Animal House," "Holiday," "the Lady Eve," "Blazing Saddles," and a number of other classics (IMHO), I have some standards to measure "the best movie ever." This certainly doesn't meet them. Although the basic concept was cute, the slow moving story made each twist easier to spot than cell phone use in silicon valley. Come to think of it, this movie moved at about the same predictable pace as "The Computer That Wore Tennis Shoes" and "The Barefoot Executive," so maybe this is the pace that Kurt Russell requests when Disney rings his phone. So yes, I found the movie dull - ideal for the disability crowd - with the only dip in the dance being Major Pain's heritage, and even that might not have been a surprise if I hadn't dozed off. The characters were likable but also dull (rather like the Disney board of directors ...interesting coincidence); even the villains weren't particularly memorable. Only Danielle Panabaker sticks with me, standing out as an environmentally conscious sidekick. If I devoted any thought to this movie (which under pain medication I wouldn't, and then these details wouldn't bother me), I'd wonder where the other superheroes were. With all these kids, the town had to be absolutely mobbed with parental superheroes like the Strongholds trotting around masquerading as pharmacists, postal workers, etc. And if you went to high school together, wouldn't you know each other's secret identity? Would you get married as superheroes AND as mild mannered postal workers? How would you decide which superhero should save the world today? Lottery? And what about those amazingly solid costumes that Kurt and Kelly had to wear? They look distractingly like the original corvette fiberglass shell. Why don't they make nail polish out of that stuff? No wonder they could stop a speeding bullet. I bet I know a few high tech corporations who would like to use them at executive board meetings. I forgot about the movie's key redeeming quality: it teaches us several important lessons - thank goodness there are movies to teach us - about compassion, the value of friends (even if they're not heroes)...wow. It was heavy. No, that's quite right. It was heavy handed. Pardon my sarcasm, which I must have learned from Billy Wilder.I found "the Incredibles" far and away more entertaining, in part because of the creative and amusing things that can be done with animation (if only I could park my car the way they were allowed to park the camper) and in part because it showed family dynamics with far more depth and humor ("Bob, it's time to get engaged!") than in this movie. And questions like multiple superheroes in town were solved. No outstanding issues, thank you very much. But I think "Sky High" was supposed to appeal to the demographic I described - the just had teeth drilled, or not thinking, or never seen a decent movie before. Hey, it was great.(Oh, it did have a good soundtrack, with some songs from the Talking Heads, Cars, & They Might Be Giants. Importing the choir for the mighty fight scenes so they could "ahhhhh" away was a bit much though.)

  • Harry Potter meets the Incredibles. posted on 30 May 2009

I remember the days when I was a kid and loved Disney comedies. Son of Flubber, The Shaggy Dog, etc. Then there was the classic period after I got a little older with Kurt Russell Disney movies. Well those days are back and you can even take your kids. It is PG rather than the G of the old stuff but that is only because of violence and that violence is directed mostly at property. The characters are not killed or injured. (A lot better than the Bad News Bears which the theater had warnings up about being a STRONG PG 13). Anyway Kurt Russell is so campy in this one and (what a shock) so is Bruce Campbell. The plot and theme borrow a lot from the Incredibles (which is a good thing because I liked it the best of Pixar's flicks) Also you might think Hogwarts when you see the classes except the high school floats in the sky and rather than potions and avoiding the dark forces the student learn how to be superhero sidekicks and how to build ray guns in science class. Won't go any further on that except to say that those scenes are a hoot. Anyway the good guys win, the bad guys lose, the hero is taught lessons about life and everyone gets a laugh a minute as it all comes about.

  • Above Average, Rough Around the Edges Family Movie. posted on 20 May 2009

Hogwarts (Harry Potter's magic school) it's not. This lightweight family movie, combines the past elements of familiar past Disney family movies along with the current fashion of comic book superhero movies of the past superheros. This summer entertainment for the family doesn't have the emotional intensity of Mean Girls (2004) nor even the strong darkness episode of Herbie: Fully Loaded (2005) that occurs not just once but twice in that movie. Instead, Sky High goes more for the laughs, special effects, the action/thrills. It has a decent villain (though her ending character script could have been stronger) and another dark character that isn't completely stereotypical as would be the case (a positive strength of this movie), but yet not fully and richly developed as could have been. Kurt Russell puts in a credible performance. Cute and fun, but not richly fulfilling nor memorable. Six out of Ten Stars.

  • Super! posted on 12 May 2009

This movie was a very pleasant surprise, and is an excellent example of what a family movie is supposed to be. It uses the clever metaphor of having to train to be a superhero to represent the trials and tribulations of getting through high school and growing up. Elements of Harry Potter and various comic books situations are very well incorporated. The best part of this movie, in addition to the really good performances, especially by Michael Angarano, a very poised and skillful young actor, is the fact that it has enough in it to please viewers of all ages. The dialog is witty, and the family situations are realistic enough to please adults, there are enough teenage triumph, setbacks and romance to appeal to teens, and there is plenty of comic book style slapstick to delight children. I also liked the fact that the supporting players, notably Dave Foley and Kevin MacDonald, are silly, but actually very funny. Usually such roles are presented as 'throw-aways' for an easy laugh, but these two use their Kids in the Hall talents to make their scenes as significant as those of the lead actors. This movie didn't get nearly enough publicity. It really is very, very good, and should be given enough support to become the classic it deserves to be.

  • Hogwarts meets the Incredibles to retell... The Civil Rights Movement? posted on 08 May 2009

This is a very entertaining piece that takes off on all kinds of superhero memorabilia... Separating Superman's powers as one for each parent to Will Stronghold, who like Jack-Jack with The Incredibles does not show them immediately until under stress! The teaching assistant's last name in Will's Mad Science class is a play on the original DC comics Robin's surname (Dick was part of the Flying GRAYSONS) and Lynda Carter as principal declares she's no Wonder Woman...All American Boy in Hero Support seemed to be a sarcastic commentary on sidekicks like Captain America's Bucky Barnes, both forgotten and gone...But for me what I found intriguing is the segregation of Sidekicks & Heroes - this was very 60's Civil Rights-ish, like when blacks started creeping into comics as people in their own right - The Falcon with same Capt America; The Prowler in Spider-Man; etc.The purpose of the film was to let a Hero see what Sidekicks have to endure! When Will dared to continue to interact with Sidekicks as equals, both Villains and Heroes are shocked! The plot's conclusion was driven enough that you could well want to pay another visit like for when Will Stronghold graduates from Sky High! http://bajanreporter.blogspot.com/

  • Delightful! posted on 06 May 2009

I saw "Sky High" at a preview screening tonight, and I must say I was pleasantly surprised! A lot of laughs for kids and grownups, a couple of good plot twists, and a nice message for the youngsters. Kurt Russell steals the show as an over-the-top super hero, who wants nothing more than for his son to follow in the family business. Kelly Preston looks amazing as his flying super hero wife. A great group of kids play the Sky High students, with cool effects to help them into their roles... and some nice parables about life in high school. I expected lots of eye rolling and lame super hero humor... but there was no lameness, no eye rolls, but plenty of good laughs and sweet moments. Parents, feel free to go with your kids to this one!
