Being the major Turtles fan I am--and have been from the get-go--I was a bit weary when I heard about their venture into CGI. I mean seriously, with the wrong director, they could easily ruin our much beloved Turtles for future generations. We all, as fans, lucked out and are greeted with a terrific rendition with one of the best stories ever though.

The story starts off with the Turtles in complete disarray. Leo is out of the country training to be a better leader, yet also trying to decide if his brothers are better off without him. Raph is out fighting baddies undercover as the metal-clad Nightwatcher. Don is keeping his nerdy schtick going strong by becoming an IT person. And Mikey is working for a party agency where he DRESSES UP AS A TURTLE. Love it.

Enter Winters. He was granted immortality centuries ago for the sacrifice of his army. However, he's now set to resurrect his army so he won't be immortal anymore. They find this out and fight back. Then the Turtles come in.

I think the greatest thing about this movie is that they centered the light-heartedness of the Turtles around a fairly intense storyline. Yeah, they still have their sense of humor about everything but the story is so dark, which only makes the movie that much better.

If you ever liked the Turtles you owe it to yourself to check this out. For you young-uns out their, here's your chance to introduce yourself to the greatest ninjas ever. Here's hoping they continue the story and bring back the awesome Shredder. Fingers crossed!

As a child my number one passion in all the world was pro wrestling, but coming in a close second were these stupid ninja turtles. Don't ask me why, and no I don't honestly think that they are somehow better than Transformers or He-Man or whatever your obsession was. So now I am the target demographic for this movie, a man child who never grew up and thus has a nostalgia for all things green plus excess time and money. The problem is that the film is kind of a stinker and even I can't ignore that. Let's start off with the animation which was quite loudly outsourced overseas and was thus produced as a deeply discounted rate. The end result is a second rate job, but considering the sweet deal they got I'm sure the Weinstein's aren't shedding any tears over the quality of the look. What they should be crying over, however, is the dialogue for this movie which I would classify as abysmal. And seriously, I'm not looking for scholarly work here, just a little bit more snap than calling a hairy bad guy Fuzzy Wuzzy. Especially when we consider just how jaded these kids are nowadays, there is no way these jokes worked on anybody other than parents trying to pretend that they are no longer jaded.

What the film does basically is tell a dull, generic story that is just a bloated TV episode. This one involves a tiff between Leonardo and Raphael over a difference in personality. We pick things up as the Turtles are getting over their glory days and moving on to the next stage of their life. But Raphael is unwilling to accept this and unable to get over his hero urges, so at night he moonlights as Batman. Leonardo, taking his talking points from Splinter, takes offense and tries to reel in the rebel. To me vigilantism is a big ole waste of energy but not necessarily inferior to the stoic restraint that Leonardo is trying to sell. But alas this is a kids movie and so there must be a lesson to be learned and here it is the importance of top down mentality as the underlings (read: slackers and free thinkers) must take their orders from Splinter (since we learned in "Karate Kid" that an Asian accent equals wisdom above all) and his assistant manager Leonardo. The rest is just a blast of white noise. The characters crack wise (or kind of try to) and then fight some bad guys. Evil is overcome and consequences are non-existent.

I have no animosity towards this movie, only to say that had I spent $11 on it at a Manhattan theatre I would've viewed that as a poor investment. So instead I paid $0.99 thanks to Amazon Unbox and for a little while forgot about all the debilitating relationship woes I am going through. There is really nothing here to excite the former fans of the show. Other than bringing back the same characters the mythology is not tapped into or advanced... at times it is even desecrated... like do you remember the episode where April is trained as a samurai? Plus the monsters were corny and interchangeable, or straight out of a Saturday morning cartoon. Most of them simply looked like escapees from early Crash Bandicoot. The voice acting is fine but nothing anybody will ever be proud of. And when the movie ended I simply shrugged my shoulders. . .and wondered if maybe they'd make another one of these movies, because for a dollar I'd totally watch it. **1/2

  • What a letdown. My inner child weeps. posted on 27 August 2009

When I was a little kid I loved the Ninja turtles. So needless to say, when I heard they were coming out with a new movie, I couldn't wait to see it, but the minute I heard it was all CGI, I could tell right away that it would be a far cry from the franchise that I had become so fond of.I thought to myself that it would have been more appealing to the older loyal fans, and kids would still want to see it. But after I actually watched it, I changed my mind. The story wasn't really interesting enough, so it didn't really matter if it was computer generated or not. There seemed to be a lot of character references that I didn't get. I assume that you had watch the current series to understand who everyone was.I found what was going on to be so forgettable. I was not compelled to see what happened to the characters or how their problem became resolved. It wasn't entirely bad. I supposed that for a kid's standards of movie entertainment, this did the job. But for an old fan, I completely disappointed.

I used to love the Ninja Turtles when I was young. I had boxes and boxes of action figures and some of my earliest memories are related to when I was given Ninja Turtle action figures as gifts. I loved the older live-action stuff and, now 20, was hoping to revisit some of my childhood heroes.I was very disappointed with the movie. With technology these days they could have made another live-action film with the same sort of over-the-top gravity-defiant fights and leaps featured in this new TMNT title. The animation was poor to say the least and I didn't think that it merited being shown on a big screen, this looked more like a straight to VHS type. Not to mention the dialog was horrible. If I was 7 I might still enjoy this but as a long time fan of the Ninja Turtles I was let down.

TMNT: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. This one is for the fans and it goes way back to about two decades ago. From cartoon (television) to plastic suits (movie version) and now thanks to CGI the turtles are back! Better than ever. What are they up to this time?Ever since Archenemy The Shredder has long been defeated, team leader Leonardo (James Arnold Taylor) has been sent away by Zen Master Splinter (Mako) for training, Donatello (Mitchell Whitfield), Michelangelo (Mikey Kelley) and Raphael (Nolan North) have grown distant from each other and days of crime fighting are over.Crime doesn't stop though, and a new danger arise, that of evil dated some 3000 years ago. Strange events are happening in New York City. Tech-industrialist Max Winters (Patrick Stewart) is gathering an army of ancient monsters. The mysterious Foot Clan led by Karai (Ziyi Zhang), in the absence of Shredder are now putting their ninja skills to aid Mr. Winters. The world is under threat once again and our green heroes are needed. But not before they are a team again.Brotherhood has come into question. The turtles are not what they used to be. Their individual personality has got the better of them. Michelangelo is carefree and fun loving, Donatello is smart and a tech geek, Raphael is rash and fearless, and Leonardo is serious and headstrong. Four characters of different qualities can clash with one another. In this movie that clash is apparent between Raphael and Leonardo. It is not hard to realize that Raphael and Leonardo do exist in each of us. One is eager to make things happen and the other to assess the situation and make the correct decision. It is a constant struggle between the two. Everyday we fight within ourselves. Who do we allow to win or are we able to find that balance? To win we often require the help of friends. The turtles found their friendship in the form of long time allies April O'Neil (Sarah Michelle Gellar) and Casey Jones (Chris Evans). Between the two of them we see also a sparkle of love. Sweet. An attraction to the lure of the dark side can also be found through Karai (Ziyi Zhang). An added dimension to the film it is. The big boys would absolutely love the mysterious sexy appeal of her independence and confidence.CGI has really brought TMNT to life. All restrictions of previous movies are cancelled. This is an evolution. And it is state of the art. Much credit certainly has to go to director Kevin Munroe, who wrote and directed this film. (A big thank you for reviving the turtles)Through CGI, Munroe was able to bring us closer to the characters. The use of angles and framing were terrific. Every scene felt like we were there with the characters, feeling their every mood. These are details made for a very good reason. I would think that the director wants to close that proximity between the screen and the audience. What is enjoyable as well is the styling of the virtual environment. From a visual point of view, it is all so cool. In Michelangelo's vocabulary it means "Dudes… That rock!"This movie will sure gain some cult following even though the story is not fantastic. It's not bad though. Every good adventure has to start somewhere and it'll definitely be interesting to see more "Cowa-Bunga!" actions from the turtles. After all we now have them reunited so it would be a pity to separate them again. I'm sure the narrator (Laurence Fishburne) would like to tell us another story. What more can I say? I'm a turtle fan with a little bit of blue, red, purple and orange in me. Which one are you?

I probably wont spoiler but i never know when i start writing. So Here is a callsic teen age mutant ninja turtles movie. With spectacular cgi but it's odd i really wish the shredder was in it but he is not the film has a great tmnt experience in the end but Raphael wanting to take Leo's place OK they had a cool fight scene at one point in the movie witch leads to a big main part of the movie. Mike is pretty much being himself he's my favorite character. Well all the characters are great but i notice the job on April i didn't know it was her until Leo said her name because originally April looked about maybe 30 year old but in the film with cgi she looked about 15 years old. But the story is decent about an old ancient stone solders that come back to life every three thousand years that April's boos orders in then he builds himself an army. And gets other foot ninja's along with a leader woman to work for him but it was a decent turtle experience good have been much better but it was decent i give it 7 stars out of 10.

  • Totally Reminiscent of the Original Comic Book Series! Welcome Home Turtles!! posted on 17 August 2009

The work herein was far above par. The animation was well done, and the story was remarkable. I found this a most enjoyable addition to the Turtleverse, and highly recommend it to anyone who was disappointed in the live action series. Our favorite turtle characters were beautifully conceived with loving execution on the big screen. The story was a pleasant surprise in that it played well from beginning to end, included the more endearing characters of the live action series, and gave you an intriguing plot with competently engaging sub-plots.The "boys" were amazing in design and animation, lending a dark reality to the Turtleverse possibilities, carrying this smoothly from whichever is your favorite live action Turtles movie, into this next chapter. The action was beautiful. That's all there is to say. It was most excellent, and I thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of this work. It was well worth the wait, and I hope it does phenomenonally at the box offices to ensure a following installment. And I just can't resist...COWABUNGA, DUDES!It rates an easy 8.8/10 on the Animated Feature Film Scale from...the Fiend :.

Lets face it, what was I expecting when I went to see this movie. My expectations were low, very low. But my nephew wanted me to bring him, so I brought him. To me, as always, the most important thing about a movie is the storyline, and this movie, the storyline sucked. The storyline in this movie was sloppy and not exciting at all. If they were going to do a remake, why not make a better storyline. Sure, this movie was for kids. But the storyline was too complex for kids and too stupid for adult.Changes to the cartoon wasn't good. I grew up watching the Saturday morning cartoons and infinite reruns of it. And watched the 2 live action movies. April O'Neil, instead of a reporter, is now a artifact finder... And Casey Jones just wasn't as cool. The graphics were not impressive, nothing blew me away. I don't know what they were doing. It wasn't 100% cgi, you can tell that some scenes, they clearly cut back and used claymation. If they did that to make it look real, they failed badly. So why did I give this movie a 5? cause my 6 year old nephew enjoyed the film cause of all the bashing. Even though he is too young to remember the names of the ninja turtles. All and all, this is for the kids.

2007 marked my 20th year as a TMNT fan i was 9 when the last film came out so here we are 14 years later am 23 years old and the long awaited 4th movie was worth the wait. So the gose like this the turtles have gone there own ways leonardo has gone to south americain rain forests and been there for 2 years donatello is running a I.T. helpline michelangelo entertains kids at there birthday partys as cowabunga carl and raphael...well thats for you to find out whoever is reading this. the whole movie is a CG cartoon this time insted of it being a live action film like the last 3 movies the story is ture to the comic book roots witch is a good thing the voice acting at first i was not sure about the new voice actors doing the voices of the turtles because if the voice acting sucks then it ruins the movie in my view but am happy to say they did a good job and suport from chris evans sarah michelle gellar kevin smith patrick stewart ziyi zhang and the late mako who died last year made the voice acting good my best bit of the film was fight between leo and raph the face off between them two was a long time comming. so in short if your a TMNT fan like me and has been waiting a long time for the 4th chapter like me then your going to love this if your not a fan check it out anyway and i dare to say film of the year bring on the next one because they are back and they are here to stay.

  • RE-TMNT'ed posted on 08 May 2009

Superman returned, Batman had begun, and now its time for another classic comic book super hero film franchise to return to the big screen completely redesigned for the year 2007 while retaining much of the wonderful sibling rivalry that filled the original films with much more then just brainless action and kooky one liners. Critics are putting this one down rather harshly and yet films like Happy Feet got showered with golden rains of praise but in the end that golden rain was just piss. Quite frankly critics have lost any and all sensibility when it comes to which films they choose to unilaterally praise or completely trash.

If you visit rottentomatoes.com TMNT is sitting pretty low on the tomatometer. Reviews like that can worry any hardcore turtle fan but allow me to ease your fears. TMNT brings back the look and style from the original Laird/Eastman comics. The CG animation is sparkling marred only by the lackluster design of the human characters April and Casey Jones. The films centerpiece is a brotherly fight in the rain between Leonardo and Raphael. Rain has never looked so good. The film really fails to live up to this highly emotional scene when we finally reach the far more substandard subplot involving immortal statues and ancient monsters from another dimension.

The voice work is standard fair but nothing stands out as terribly as the truly awful Splinter, voiced by a man simply known as Mako, who recently passed away. So at least when the sequel comes around we can get something that sounds a little more like the original splinter other than one who drank just a little too much sake before each scene. Splinter slurs his wisdom like a drunk whino holding onto his buddies shoulder trying to keep from falling off the bar stool. The turtles sound like you expect them too and Sarah Michelle Gellar goes unnoticed as April O' Neil.

The film has some really impressive action seqeuences and does a fine job of setting itself up for a far better sequel down the line. This one will have to settle for being just slightly above average. If you are a turtles fan, like me, you will find much to enjoy in this revival of a long dead franchise. So lets toast some sake to our favorite foursome because they are back to kick some serious shell!

  • Old memories and new excitement. posted on 08 March 2009

Back in the early nineties, you quickly became the schoolyard's most avoided outcast in case you didn't like The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and I vividly remember our teacher furiously threatening to punish the next kid who would dare to yell out "Cowabunga" in class before the school day was over. The Turtles also were one of the very last solid trends on TV. Unlike other hypes like "The Power Rangers" or "Pokémon", they never truly lost their popularity despite not being shown on television daily anymore. Kevin Munroe cleverly figured that a new and fancily animated motion picture about the Turtles would always be profitable and successful and he was – at least more or less – right, too! "TMNT" looks great! The computer generated animation is more than impressive and regularly even manages to compete with the acclaimed works of studios like Pixar. Naturally the success of such a film depends on a lot more than just neat visuals and expensive looking images, but even then there isn't a whole lot to be exaggeratedly skeptical about. Munroe's script is adequate on all levels and admirably blends action & excitement with witty humor and a modest dose of childhood nostalgia. The Turtles need to learn how to work together and fight crime as a team again after Leonardo didn't immediately return from a training mission to stimulate his leadership skills. Especially the stubborn Raphael is reluctant to accept orders from his older brother, also because he started his very own crime-fighting unit in the violence-infested streets of New York. Still, they'll need to combine forces again in order to conquer the 13 monsters that spawned from another dimension 3000 years ago and the ancient fossilized warriors who plan to bring them together. I was afraid that a cinema-throwback to an extremely popular late 80's/early 90's TV-franchise would result in a childish and over-the-top wannabe cool crap movie, but TMNT is a reasonably fast-paced and spectacular film that comes warmly recommended to the fans. The Turtles are still their own pizza-munching, prank-playing, hyperactive and competitive selves, only there's less "cowabunga" and a little more mature style. The film isn't entirely without flaws, far from it, as the story is quickly gets a little dull. The ending comes frustratingly abrupt and why the hell do all nowadays theme songs have to be sung by hip-hop/rap/R&B artists? The old them is still more than catch enough, if you ask me.

  • Better than any other TMNT thingy put together! posted on 30 July 2009

"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Heroes in a half shel, TURTLE POWER!" Whew, I just typed that with my Wii, now I see why they called it TMNT. Anyway, great movie! It's the same ninja fun as always! Only one complaint, no Shredder. I think I discouraged everybody to see it, but it's still good. Besides, I was getting sick of him anyway (But for the Sequal...) Best TMNT movie since the 1990 film, maybe even better!

  • Is the green fighting machines back or not? posted on 26 July 2009

I am in my mid 20s so I was one of the many that practically grew up watching Teenage mutant ninja turtles and got caught up in the whole TMNT phenomenon back in the late 80s and the early 90s. That being said, the craze escalated when the guys in green migrated to the big screen and spanned over 2 sequels, which to my opinion didn't match up the level of polish the first one was.Yes I watched the new TMNT movie and I was, once again, one of the few or many that wasn't keen about the whole CGI transition and it just looked too kiddie cartoon to me. However, being a fan I am, I went to see the movie anyways because I always have a soft spot for my green heroes. Bear in mind, I watched this movie like weeks ago and only now that I have watched the old live action movie, I think it is appropriate to give it a non bias since all of the hype is subsided and I finally gather good thoughts about it.Let me say this, the first live action movie still has a lot of charm to it, although it is almost 2 decades old, and it is really close to the comic book origins. I still, up to this day, have goose bumps while watching it and the one liners still makes me laugh. I realized now why the first one is such classic and the rest just fall flat - the sequels were toned down a bit and they weren't as gritty and mature as the first one was.Now we are with TMNT - a rival attempt to the franchise- now let me say I totally enjoyed this movie and I think the transition from live to CGI was best suited for the following reasons: 1. It is easier for the viewer to be caught up in the illusion as opposed to the live actions films because we knew that the turtles were fake - guys in rubbery suits...2. We finally grasp the sense of the turtles being ninjas - in the old films their movements were limited because of the obvious, but here they're more agile and realistic in terms of fighting.3. Because it is CGI the imagination, scenery, fights can go wild because the sky is the limit with CG as opposed to live action..I can go on and on, but the movie just fit right with this style of filming. I really enjoyed the interaction with the turtles - Leo character fits right as I remembered him to be; Raf seems complex and different from the bunch, which is true the comics; Donnie, although not much character development, seems to be the same old Don as I remembered him to be; and then there is Mikey....I love this guy..the comic relief of the film...He's cute, cool, mellow, and just a knuckle head...This movie is must see to all turtle fans and I do hope it does well in the box office and it doesn't lose its momentum in terms of its tone. The animation was top notch, the turtles looked amazing, even more so than the human characters - which needs a lot of work because they looked rather rigid to me.Over all..nice work and I hope we see many sequels with this one..Cheers

  • Exceeded My Expectations posted on 26 July 2009

I have been a big Turtle fan since the beginning, even though I was but a wee lad at the time. The idea of over-sized turtles learning the art of Ninjitsu from an over-sized rat in a sewer is...well...genius! The first and second movies were awesome, and for the first animated movie of the series this one is wonderfully exciting! It has all the elements of the past; comedy, action, darkness, brotherhood, and TURTLES KICKING ASS! From the beginning until the end, it exceeded my expectations starting with the graphics. At some points it literally looked REAL while at others i sat in awe at how beautifully designed the atmosphere was. The action was as good as the live-action movies and better than the newer cartoon series recently seen on t.v. The story was decent, but at times I didn't care about the bad guys and I just wanted to see more of the Turtles! The fighting scenes are worth not blinking for! All in all I cannot wait until they make a sequel!

  • Surprising As Hell, But This Is ASTONISHING!!! posted on 24 July 2009

I was just absolutely petrified when I first saw this movie. It was so fantastic. I practically loved every second. The jokes were lame and the effects could've been better, but the action sequences in this movie and the way they build up their characters was amazing. I wasn't really wanting to watch this at all, but I decided to give it a try, and when I did, I was entertained through the whole film. I am glad that I didn't make my opinion based on the realistic trilogy, which aren't worth seeing. This was spectacular, and it doesn't appear to be, but watch this whenever you can if you haven't, because I guarantee you, it's great and definitely worth the time.

  • Definitely eye popping.... posted on 24 July 2009

You've probably been hearing comments of how stunning the animation was. And every last one of those comments are right. It is obvious how much care and attention was put into the look of this film. Everything from the New York City environment to the Turtles themselves looked absolutely fantastic. The story was sort of a mixed bag. I liked the struggle between the Turtles and how Leonardo is trying his hardest to get the team back together with Raphael trying to pull away. Everything else, however, could've been a little better. There doesn't really seem to be any level of suspense here, save for a fight between two main characters (which looks phenomenal, I might add). I also would've liked to have seen a bit more screen time for Donatello, who always seems to be pushed to the side. And there were some jokes here and there that might make you cringe, most of them involving Michelangelo. But this is still an enjoyable flick for everyone to watch, even if you're not a Turtle fan. It's worth seeing for the animation alone.

  • Your wondering why I bought this with the score above? posted on 20 July 2009

Well... I'm a bit nostalgic for CG shows that Bomb. Tron.. The Last Starfighter.. Final Fantasy.. Young Sherlock Holmes.. Sky Captain.. and on and on and so forth. All of which I mentioned had wonderful potential in the exploitation of this new technology. And aside of YSH above, what failed them was the rancid undercook plots and characters. YSH failed because it was trying to tell a Mature story (Murder aplenty there) around a teenager. Bad idea all around. TMNT did not give enough time to the "villain" to appreciate his goals. Not enough time for the sub flunkies to brew a convincing reason for their objectives. The movie slams on the brakes much too often to give the viewer a smooth journey. Buy this if you too are a sucker for past CG failures.

I saw this movie today and it was amazing. The roof top rain scene was clearly worth some major animation awards and I hope it does get some when award season '08 roles around. What is awesome about it... + Animation: The Animation was far superior to most of the stuff that I have seen.+ Character Development: Raphael and Leo are so well developed, but sadly my favorite, Donatello, is not really doing much. There is awesome open end with Karai and "someone from your past." I am hoping there is a sequel

This movie rocked, I've been a Ninja Turtles fan my whole life, and I'm 20 now. I've seen all turtles movies, and honestly it was embarrassing, the turtles were 2 clumsy, and it was really bad jokes all the way in the 3 movies, I was 3 when the first turtles movie released I didn't saw it before I was 5, and I still remember, that the movie was a disappointment. Enough about the past. TMNT was the movie I wated for a long time, this time the turtles are more mature both in talks and in action, the movie is a bit more serious, because the story-writers surely realized that the real fans of TMNT are grown-ups now. A must for every fan, specially for those who wated for a better TMNT movie.

  • Thank god this was animated and not live action! posted on 07 April 2009

This film is okay. It appeals more to elementary school kids at most. What's good about this film is the 3D animation and the voice casting of the turtles and April and Casey. The only voice that really bothered me was Master Splinter's. He sounded like he had a dry throat the entire time. The plot is a little weak. It focuses mostly on the relationship between Leonardo and Raphael which is a disappointment because it's supposed to be about four turtles not two. They're also supposed to find 13 monsters that have been around thousands of years and put them in a portal. They've been around for that long and some how haven't made the news. Anyway Leo's supposed to be a better leader so he leaves and we find him in Central America or somewhere around there in the beginning of the film. When he comes back everyone, but Raphael accepts him back. Raphael has been moonlighting as the Nightwatcher, a vigilante in the night. Some how none of the turtles, or Master Splinter for that matter, figure out that it's him. Not that many guys looking to kick evil's ass at night and since he's asleep all day and out all night what could he be doing?! Another problem is Casey and April. Casey is going around at night fighting criminals with a bat and a hockey mask. Raphael I understand. I mean you see him wearing cool metal armor and he's got martial arts. Plus two small knives which he's deadly with and a motorcycle. You san understand why he hasn't gotten killed doing this, but Casey is doing the same thing and doesn't have any of the advantages that Raphael has. He doesn't even drive anything. He just walks! How come he isn't dead? I don't know. April is first presented as an archaeologist which is believable, but later we see her fighting with a sword against thousands of ninjas. Her and Casey make it out alright for some reason. The turtles are in this fight too and them I do believe making it out alright, but an archaeologist and a tough guy against ninjas? Come on. There are two more good things though. One is the music. When you hear it in the movie it just fits in with the scenes. Particularity a scene in where Raphael, as the Nightwatcher, is fighting a little monster. The other good thing is the opening scene in which two armies are fighting each other. It's a cool thing to watch on screen. However, this film would've been better if the story was different. If they had begun the story with the turtles origins and had then face the Shredder ending with Leo's departure it would probably have been more entertaining. This film has some decent action and voice casting(for the most part), but it is a film you could live without seeing.
