BEAT THE WORLD follows three dance crews from around the world, as they prepare to do battle at the Beat The World competition held in Detroit. Fusion is the dance crew that comes from the streets of Windsor, a city that sits across the bridge from Detroit. With the competition being held so close to Fusion's backyard, the crew's leader, Yuson (Tyrone Brown), is determined to win. With the help of Justin (Chase Armitage), he invents a fresh dance style that mashes hip-hop and parkour. Yuson's long-time girlfriend, Maya, (Mishael Morgan) is tired of being second in his life and decides to move on to pursue her own dreams. Not only does Yuson have to excel for his crew, he needs to win the contest to prove his worth to himself and to his girl. Meanwhile, Olivia (Kristy Flores), a member of Revolution, the hottest dance crew in Brazil, hopes to escape the difficult life she leads by winning the world competition. What she doesn't know is that the head of the crew, Carlos (Shane Pollard), falls prey to an old gambling habit and loses the money for the crew's plane tickets. Without telling anyone, Carlos foolishly decides to smuggle drugs for a shady gangster to get the cash. But drug money never comes without a price and serious trouble follows Carlos and his crew to America. When last year's champions, Germany's The Flying Steps, show up at the competition, it looks like they are ready to win again but the self-assuredness of their leader, Eric, (Christian Loclair) may become their undoing. In a final showdown to become world champions (and win $100,000 in prize money), the three crews take on the world's best. When they finally face off with one another, lifelong hopes, dreams, and even lives are at stake.

Yorkshire, 1978. A mother, father and their three year old son are brutally stabbed to death while they sleep. There is no motive. They were a model family. The nation is outraged by the senseless killings. Incredibly, the British public are overwhelmingly in favour of bringing back the death penalty to see justice carried out. Even more incredibly the killer, who is caught red-handed trying to drag the father's body out of the house, manages to hide the three year old's body in a place where the investigators, the police and even their dog teams would never find it. For months all the nation can talk about is the "Kid Killer" but, and this is the most incredible fact of all, not because he cold-bloodedly stabbed to death a three year old, his mother and his father, but because these innocent victims were also his family. The "Kid Killer" was their twelve year old son William. Malvern, thirty years later. Ryan is thirty three. He dreams of being a journalist with a national voice. He has done all his life. However, he's still working for the same small newspaper he started at thirteen years ago. He's an underachiever who quietly blames everyone else for his own failure. His mother ran out on him when he was just a child and the only person who has ever been proud of him is his father, who's funeral he's just attended. So why is William, finally released from a life of prisons, social workers and psychologists, and living under a new identity, giving Ryan the chance to be the one who tells his story to the world? A story that is ingrained in the public's memory. A story that has become synonymous with unmitigated evil. A story that will dominate every facet of the media for months, especially if Ryan can uncover where William buried his three year old brother's body. Right from the outset Ryan's running out of time. William, psychologically damaged beyond repair, is now only interested in one thing, killing himself, and Ryan holds the key. Five pills being developed by his wife's pharmaceutical company would to do it. Easily, painlessly. So can Ryan convince Karen that she should take the risk to get them? It could take them out of the spiralling hole of debt they're in and change their dead-end life, but Karen knows that Ryan could actually do this himself if he just had the ambition. Maybe her risk will spark some ambition. Maybe Karen didn't see their lifeless marriage turning out this way. Maybe it's time for a change. William will give Ryan five meetings to get the story he wants. Five meetings tinged with mental and physical torture. Each meeting costs Ryan a pill, and without the location of the three year old's body he has nothing, and doesn't William know it. It's a game of Russian Roulette for Ryan where every pill could spell the end of William, the end of the story. The secret lost forever. Ryan also has a secret. One that would change his life forever, if only he knew it were there, and now the only one who can tell him is his dead father. In a final twist that will make the public look away in shame, we learn that amidst the anger, the bitterness and the demented theories of a tortured mind who can't live with himself, that this is actually a story of incredible courage, ultimate sacrifice and love. • Little Deaths

    [ 2011, UK ] starting from $1.99

Actors: Scott Ainslie, Mike Anfield, James Anniballi, Kate Braithwaite, Daniel Brocklebank, Tommy Carey, Errol Clarke, Luke de Lacey, Christopher Fairbank, Brendan Gregory, Oliver Guy-Watkins, Siubhan Harrison, Amy Joyce Hastings, Phoenix James, Jodie Jameson, Holly Lucas, Tom Sawyer, Steel Wallis, James Oliver Wheatley, Samantha Wright

Directors: Sean Hogan, Andrew Parkinson, Simon Rumley

The three episodes were each written and directed by, in order: House and Home by Sean Hogan, Mutant Tool by Andrew Parkinson, and Bitch by Simon Rumley. (All three made films that played at Fantastic Fest in 2006.) The episodes are all set in modern-day London, but otherwise appear to have no relationship to each other. (Well, except the obvious "death" connection. And other stuff that comes up after you watch all three one after the other.) The sequencing of the episodes is exactly right. House and Home starts off as kind of a chamber horror piece. Richard (Luke de Lacey) and Victoria (Siubhan Harrison) are a married couple who are a little bit off; Vi refuses Richard sex, and the two talk about something they've been doing as "just a bit of fun ... nobody gets hurt ... much." It seems that whatever their nefarious activity might be, it's evidently something that brings them a measure of sexual satisfaction. Richard recruits a young homeless woman (Holly Lucas) to come home for dinner with the immortal pickup line: "Have you come to know Jesus?" She says her name is Sorrow, setting up an evening featuring food, wine, bodily fluids, blood, and guts. Mutant Tool also features a couple who are having problems. Frank (Daniel Brocklebank) is helping Dr. Reece (Brendan Gregory) collect gooey, er, stuff (we're not quite sure what it is at first), while his girlfriend Jennifer (Jodie Jameson) is having trouble adjusting to a new lifestyle. She's a former drug addict and prostitute; Frank sends her to Dr. Reece to get help, and the good doctor prescribes medication. The tablets produce unpleasant side effects for Jennifer: she starts experiencing weird visions. Meanwhile, a parallel tale unfolds as two grungy technicians care for an unfortunate person who has "something special" (the titular "mutant tool") and is chained up behind a plastic curtain. Finally, Bitch revolves around still another couple -- yes, there is a theme here after all -- with an off-beat relationship. Pete (Tom Sawyer) and Claire (Kate Braithwaite) play sexual power games with one another at home, with Claire in the dominant position and Pete very much a submissive. Out in the world, they go clubbing and work their jobs, seeming very much like any other couple, but once they get home, all bets are off. We get the sense that Pete is tiring of Claire's dominance, even though he appears to be a willing partner.

  • Too Big to Fail

    [ 2011, USA ] starting from $1.99

Too Big to Fail is actually a thriller about a time in America's financial history when our entire economy could have crumbled and almost did. Greed, the hunger for power, the hunger for money, and the lack of financial regulation all led to the financial collapse. You will see inside the egos of the cast of characters including the politicians involved. Some say that Sorkin writes with a "liberal bias" but I, as a reviewer, don't see that. He seems to write the facts based on an incredible level of documentation. I give the book 4 stars. The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is because I thought the editing was poorly done. If you want to truly understand what happened when our financial system failed and the economy went into a deep recession because of it, read this book. At the end, you will be astonished and amazingly well-informed.
